Engine Controls - Tests W/o Codes 3.0: Diagnosis Nissan Maxima A32

SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS

Symptom checks cannot be used properly unless problem occurs while vehicle is being tested. To reduce diagnostic time, ensure steps in Basic Diagnostic Procedures in the TESTS W/CODES articles were performed before diagnosing a symptom. Following symptoms are available for diagnosis.

  1. Backfire
  2. Engine Stalls
  3. Engine Stalls Under Acceleration/Deceleration
  4. Engine Stalls Under Heavy Electrical Load
  5. Engine Run-On (Dieseling)
  6. Excessive Fuel Consumption
  7. Hard Start/Will Not Start (Cold)
  8. Hard Start/No Restart (Hot)
  9. Hesitation
  10. Hesitation, Flat Spot Or Surge
  11. High Idle (No Return To Idle)
  12. High Idle After Warm-Up
  13. Hunting
  14. Lack Of Power/Poor Acceleration (Stumble)
  15. Rough Idle
  16. Spark Knock (Pinging)
  17. Surge
  18. Unstable Idle

INTERMITTENT PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS

Intermittent fault testing requires duplicating circuit or component failure to identify problem. These procedures may lead to computer setting a fault code which may help in diagnosis.

If problem vehicle does not produce fault codes, monitor voltage or resistance values using a DVOM while attempting to reproduce conditions causing intermittent fault. A status change on DVOM indicates a fault has been located.

Use a DVOM to pinpoint faults. When monitoring voltage, ensure ignition is on or engine is running. Ensure ignition is off or negative battery cable is disconnected when monitoring circuit resistance. Status changes on DVOM during test procedures indicate area of fault.

TEST PROCEDURES

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce conditions creating an intermittent fault, use following methods

  1. Lightly vibrate component.
  2. Heat component.
  3. Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
  4. Spray component with water.
  5. Remove/apply vacuum source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit.
