The control module receives information from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) about the fuel / air mixture when idling at both the lower and upper part-load range. If the fuel / air mixture deviates from lambda=1, the short-term fuel trim will compensate for this by adjusting the injection time so that lambda=1 is achieved. When the short-term fuel trim makes an adjustment, the integrator median must be adjusted by the long-term trim. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-261A will be stored when the long-term trim must be adjusted to almost maximum in the lower part load area.

The engine control module (ECM) checks the signal for engine coolant temperature (ECT).

After the engine is started, the engine control module (ECM) calculates the theoretical engine coolant temperature (ECT) based on factors such as time since start, engine speed (RPM) and load. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the signal from the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is static and does not correspond to the calculated temperature.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored together with another diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed when the engine is running.

If the engine temperature (signal) exceeds a certain limit, the control module checks current operating condition and compares to a calculated engine temperature. Calculations are based on, among other things, speed and load. If the signal from the engine temperature sensor matches a temperature that is higher than a certain limit value and is not reduced within a certain time, the control module interprets this as a malfunction and the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed when the engine is running.

Condition

If the signal from the engine temperature sensor matches a temperature that exceeds a certain limit in relation to the other, the control module interprets this as a malfunction and the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed after approx. 10 minutes with the engine running.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed when the engine is running.

Probe monitoring begins after probe preheating diagnostics are complete. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-280A is stored if there is a fault in the front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) or its wiring causing the signal to deviate from its permitted range

The control module registers four different types of fault

  1. Signal too high The control module compares the front and rear adaptation values. A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored when the values deviate by more than 3%. NOTE: The fault may be in the front or rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) circuit. the control module registers that the signal from the front probe is above 4.8 V for too long the signal from the front probe does not deviate from lambda= 1 the signal from the front probe is showing a lean fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a rich mixture the signal from the front probe is showing a rich fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a lean mixture.
  2. Signal too low The control module monitors the aging of the probe by checking its dynamics when switching between lean and rich mixtures. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module registers that the probe is operating too slowly. the control module registers that the signal from the front probe is above 4.8 V for too long the signal from the front probe does not deviate from lambda= 1 the signal from the front probe is showing a lean fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a rich mixture the signal from the front probe is showing a rich fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a lean mixture.
  3. Signal missing The control module monitors cross-induction from the probe preheating. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored when cross induction exceeds the permitted value. the control module registers that the signal from the front probe is above 4.8 V for too long the signal from the front probe does not deviate from lambda= 1 the signal from the front probe is showing a lean fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a rich mixture the signal from the front probe is showing a rich fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a lean mixture.
  4. Faulty signal A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) stored when: the control module registers that the signal from the front probe is above 4.8 V for too long the signal from the front probe does not deviate from lambda= 1 the signal from the front probe is showing a lean fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a rich mixture the signal from the front probe is showing a rich fuel mixture while the signal from the rear probe is showing a lean mixture.

  2. one of the cables for heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) preheating is short-circuited to the probe's other wiring
  3. defective heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

Faulty signal

  1. short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in signal cable (+)
  2. short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in signal cable (-)
  3. short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in pump current cable
  4. short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in calibration current cable
  5. open-circuit in signal cable (+)
  6. defective heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
