Scheme 390
  1. Activate the test using the VCT2000 (or appropriate scan tool).
  2. Read off initial parameters and check them according to start conditions for performing the test.
  3. Check that the test has started. Parameters run status shall go to "In progress" and the test phase shall go to "Reference". NOTE: If the test does not start, check that the start conditions are fulfilled. When the reference phase is finished, check of the tank system starts. The pressure in the tank starts to increase, see graph. Within 15 minutes the Engine control module makes a decision as to whether there is leakage in the tank system or not. The test is finished.
  4. Check parameters for test result and follow relevant instructions provided in this service information. NOTE: Estimated leakage shall be used to get an idea of the proximity to the diagnostic trouble code limit. If the estimated leakage is very near the diagnostic trouble code limit (greater than 0.3mm), troubleshooting should probably be performed despite the Tank system, test result shows "No leakage found", especially if a diagnostic trouble code for leakage has been stored earlier. NOTE: Use diagnostic trouble code counter to, see the frequency of the problem. Also use frozen values to get an idea if external conditions may have affected the result. Compare with current conditions in the workshop. Conditions for starting the quick test of the fuel tank system No DTCs related to EVAP purge valve or ambient air pressure sensor set. Battery voltage 11-15 V. Atmospheric pressure higher than 750 hPa, approx. 2500 m (8200 ft). Fuel level 0-85 %. Ambient air temperature 4-35 °C. NOTE: The battery voltage must be correct throughout the entire test. The test can take up to 15 minutes, depending on the quantity of fuel in the fuel tank. It is highly recommended to use the constant voltage charger, Midtronics PSC-550, during the test. For more information, see 30-04 (USA/CDN). CHECKING COMPONENT AND CONNECTIONS

  1. By activating quick-test of EVAP-valve, the valve's status can be decided. The test is based on pressure pulses through the valve and, in this way, the valve's function can be checked. If malfunction is detected on the EVAP-valve when performing the quick-test, this indicates that the malfunction is permanent.
  2. Engine idling during the entire test. Activate quick-test EVAP-valve. The test takes a few seconds. If the result shows "Malfunction found", function is poor. Check hose/hose connections between EVAP-valve and canister for damage, clogging or squeezing. The valve may need to be cleaned or replaced. If the result shows "No malfunction found", function is correct. Then check hose/hose connections between EVAP-valve and inlet pipe for damage, clogging or squeezing. Remedy as necessary. REPLACING THE COMPONENT

The engine control module (ECM) has registered an internal fault.

If the fault is intermittent, it has been registered previously but no longer remains. Intermittent faults can be due to disruption when the engine control module (ECM) started or can be another type of fault that may recur at different instances. The fault is assessed on a case by case basis. If the fault recurs, replace the engine control module (ECM).

In the event of a permanent fault, replace the engine control module (ECM).

Remedy as necessary.

HINT: Incorrect oil grade can cause malfunctions in the variable valve timing (VVT) unit. Contaminants in the engine oil can cause damage to components in the variable valve timing (VVT) unit.

Check the engine oil grade. Check especially for contaminants.

HINT: The VVT unit for the exhaust camshaft has a spring which turns the camshaft at control. This means that if the oil pressure becomes too low for the VVT unit, the spring controls the camshaft out too much.

Remove the camshaft reset valve, check the reset valve and the oil ducts in the cylinder head. Check for contaminants and blockages.

Check the engine oil pressure.

Try a new camshaft reset valve if no fault is found or if the above remedies do not rectify the fault.

HINT: The fault can also be caused by an internal fault in the variable valve timing (VVT) unit. If the above fault-tracing/remedies do not rectify the fault, the variable valve timing (VVT) unit may be damaged.

HINT: Contaminants in the engine oil can cause damage to components in the variable valve timing (VVT) unit.

Check the engine oil grade. Check especially for contaminants.

Remove the camshaft reset valve, check the reset valve and the oil ducts in the cylinder head. Check for contaminants and blockages.

Remedy as necessary.

  1. Verification consists of 2 parts. Part 1 is carried out via a test in the workshop. Part 2 is carried out on the road. If the function is determined as incorrect in part 1, then part 2 does not need to be carried out. If the function is determined as being correct in part 1 and the vehicle can be tested on the road, part 2 must be carried out. This is because in certain cases the function can be difficult the check in a workshop environment.
