The engine control module (ECM) measures the voltage difference between the rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) maximum and minimum values. The difference must be greater than 0.3 V.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the engine control module (ECM) registers that these parameters are not reached after approximately 5 minutes and the accumulated or actual probe preheating has reached its parameter.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed approximately 5 minutes after starting (if probe preheating is active and at least one fuel shut-off has been made).

Substitute Value

  1. Rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) control shut off.

Possible Source

  1. Contact resistance and/or oxidation in the terminals
  2. Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INFORMATION ECM-220B

Condition

The engine control module (ECM) continuously detects the rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the engine control module (ECM) detects that the voltage exceeds or is below a certain value and it is interpreted as a fault.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed after approximately 3-5 minutes when the engine is running.

Substitute Value

  1. Rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) control is disabled.

Possible Source

Signal too high

  1. Short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal cable.

Signal too low

  1. Contact resistance and oxidation in the terminals
  2. Short-circuit to ground in the signal cable
  3. Open-circuit in the signal cable
  4. Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

Fault symptom[s]

  1. Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle for approximately 3-5 minutes to perform the diagnostic. Check whether the fault is permanent or intermittent. Read off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) fault status when the diagnostic status is "Completed". The fault is permanent if the fault status is "Fault found". The fault is intermittent if the fault status is "No fault detected".

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INFORMATION

Condition

Engine control module (ECM) checks the function of the rear heated oxygen sensor by monitoring how fast the sensor reacts when the system switches from rich to lean in case of a fuel shut-off.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects that

  1. Voltage across rear heated oxygen sensor drops too slowly.
  2. Slow voltage-drop in case of more than 10 subsequent fuel shut-offs during the same driving cycle.

The control module's test for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) starts in the event of

  1. Hot engine.
  2. Vehicle speed 70-90 km/h.
  3. Fuel shut-off.

Note. The control module can only detect the fault once the test has been started and the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored when the conditions are met.

Substitute Value

  1. None.

Possible Source

  1. Contact resistance, oxidation or poor contact in connections.
  2. Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

Note. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is only used for development purposes and is not to be fault-traced. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be ignored and erased with no additional remedial action.

The engine control module (ECM) compares the front and rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) adaptation values. In order to check front oxygen sensor regulation, check the engine control module (ECM) output signals from the rear oxygen sensor. If the control system for the heated oxygen sensors is working correctly, the control signals from the rear oxygen sensor must be within a predefined statistical interval.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects that

  1. The measured signals from the rear oxygen sensor (bank 1) is over or under the permissible range for a long period of time. The diagnostic trouble code can be generated after 35 minutes of normal driving (not with heavy load).

The control module's test for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) starts in the event of

  1. Engine running.

Note. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is primarily used for development purposes and has little or no information value during fault-tracing.

  2. Contact resistance in the terminals.
  3. Damaged cable harness.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INFORMATION ECM-2210

Condition

The engine control module (ECM) checks whether there is a short-circuit to ground or supply voltage in the preheating circuit heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). It also checks for an open-circuit or whether the heating resistor is faulty. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the engine control module (ECM) registers any of these.

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed at ignition on and if the battery voltage is in the range 11-16 V.

Substitute Value

  1. Rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) preheating shut off.

Possible Source

Signal too low

  1. Damaged fuse.
  2. Open-circuit in the power cable
  3. Short-circuit to ground in the power cable
  4. Damaged rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).

Signal too high

  1. Short-circuit to supply voltage in the power cable

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the operation of the rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) by checking its signal. The engine control module (ECM) checks that the probe has registered both rich and lean fuel/air mixtures. If this is not the case, the engine control module (ECM) changes the fuel/air mixture. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the rear probe has still not registered a lean or rich fuel / air mixture.

Note. At fuel shut-off, the probe must show a lean fuel/air mixture. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the switch-over time to a lean fuel/air mixture is too long.
