Timing, Check and Adjust
Remove air cleaner housing. Disconnect ground cable from battery. Remove upper toothed belt panelling.
Turn crankshaft in engine rotational direction until piston of 1st cylinder is at TDC. The rear mark on the crankshaft pulley is opposite the pointer on the engine block.
If timing adjustment is correct, the TDC fixing bolts must be able to be inserted in the camshaft and injection pump gears in this position.
| Camshaft pulley = | Bolt M 6 x 1.00 x 30 mm |
|---|---|
| Injection pump drive gear = | Bolt M 8 x 1.25 x 40 mm |
If the fixing bolts cannot be inserted, adjust the timing as follows.
Loosen tension roller bolt and release tension spring (illus. I shows 15 D, 15 DT, X 15 DT)
For this, unscrew right bracket for engine suspension from cylinder block on 17 D and X 17 D - see operation "Toothed Belt, Remove and Install (17 D, X 17 D)". Remove toothed belt via injection pump drive pulley.
Turn toothed belt pulleys (short travel) until TDC fixing bolts can be inserted (see illus. II).
Install toothed belt on camshaft pulley first - then on injection pump pulley.
Remove TDC fixing bolts (see illus. II).
Attach tension spring - toothed belt is tensioned. Fasten tension roller. First tighten fastening bolt (1), then nut (2).
Tension roller to cylinder block - 19 Nm / 14 lbf. ft.
Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions in engine rotation direction and check adjustment.
Check adjustment of injection pump - see operation "Start of Supply at Fuel Injection Pump, Check and Adjust".
17 D and X 17 D: install right bracket for engine suspension - see operation "Toothed Belt, Remove and Install (17 D, X 17 D)" in this group.
Install toothed belt cover. Connect ground cable to battery. Install air cleaner housing.
Toothed belt panelling to front plate - 10 Nm / 7 lbf. ft.
