How to Replace the Piston Rings Opel Calibra I

Piston Rings, Replace

Remove piston with con-rod - see operation

"Piston with Con-rod, Remove and Install".

Remove piston rings with piston ring pliers.

Clean piston ring grooves with ground-down side of old piston ring.

Piston ring clearance - with feeler gauge.

Insert piston ring at narrowest point in cylinder bore.

Permissible ring gap:

Rectangular compression ring - 0.3 to 0.5 mm.

Tapered compression ring - 0.3 to 0.5 mm.

Oil scraper ring - 0.4 to 1.4 mm.

Piston ring vertical clearance - with feeler gauge in piston ring groove.

Permissible vertical clearance

Rectangular compression ring - 0.02 to 0.04 mm

Tapered compression ring - 0.01 to 0.03 mm

Oil scraper ring - 0.01 to 0.03 mm

Insert new piston rings in piston with piston ring pliers and code "TOP" on top.

Note positions of piston ring gaps.

1 2nd compression ring

2 Steel band ring (oil scraper ring - upper)

3 Steel band ring (oil scraper ring - lower)

4 1st compression ring

5 Intermediate ring (oil scraper ring)

Coat piston rings with engine oil and press together with piston compressor band.

Install piston with con-rod - see operation

"Piston with Con-rod, Remove and Install".

Installation position:

Arrow (1) on piston head points to engine timing side, bead on con-rod points to flywheel side.
