Removing and Installing Balancer Shaft Unit Opel Astra G

Remove

1. 1. Remove oil pan • See operation "Removing and installing oil pan".
2. 2. Remove crankshaft pulse pick-up (1) with O-ring from cylinder block.
3. 3. Insert Crankshaft Lock Pin KM-929 (2) in aperture for crankshaft pulse pick-up and simultaneously slowly turn the crankshaft in engine rotational direction at the torsional vibration damper fastening bolt until the crankshaft lock pin engages to stop in the cylinder block or crank web.

Note. In this position, the marks (3) must align.

4. 4. Remove cover (1) from balancer shaft unit.
5. 5. Insert KM-979 (3) into side of balancer shaft unit. • Turn chain tensioner back by hand. • Insert KM-978 (2) into hole.
6. 6. Remove fastening bolt (5) from chain sprocket (4). • Pull chain sprocket from balancer shaft unit and remove from chain.

7. 7. Slacken and unscrew fastening bolts (1) and (2) from outside to inside.
8. 8. Remove balancer shaft unit from cylinder block.
9. 9. When replacing balancer shaft unit: convert guide rail (4) and chain tensioner (3). • Guide rail and chain tensioner to balancer shaft unit – Tightening torque 9 Nm / 6.6 lbf. ft.
10. 10. Clean sealing surfaces and remove gasket residues.
11. 11. Insert balancer shaft unit (with KM-979 uncoupled) into guide ferrules. • Attach to cylinder block with new fastening bolts. • Fastening bolts (1) – Tightening torque 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft. + 30°. • Fastening bolts (2) – Tightening torque 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft. + 60°.

Install

12. 12. Insert chain sprocket into chain • Attach to balancer shaft unit using new fastening bolt – Tightening torque 90 Nm / 66 lbf. ft. + 30°. • Remove all locking tools.
13. 13. Insert crankshaft pulse pick-up into cylinder block with new O-ring • Tightening torque 8 Nm / 6 lbf. ft.
14. 14. Install oil pan • See operation "Removing and installing oil pan".
