How to Replace the Piston Opel Astra G

Remove

Remove lower part of oil pan – see operation "Oil Pan, Lower Part, Remove and Install".

Remove upper part of oil pan – see operation "Oil Pan – Upper Part, Remove and Install".

Remove cylinder head – see operation "Cylinder Head, Remove and Install".

Remove piston with con-rod – see operation "Piston with Con-rod, Remove and Install".

Caution

Before removing the piston pin (2) note the installation position of the con-rod (5) to the piston (4) – bead (6) on con-rod faces in the opposite direction to the arrow (3) on the piston head.

Remove retaining ring (1) from the piston boss with suitable tool – slide piston pin from piston and con-rod by hand.

Install

Coat piston pin with engine oil.

Press piston pin by hand into piston and con-rod until the ring groove is freely accessible.

Note installation position of con-rod relative to piston – bead on con-rod is positioned against direction of arrow on piston head – see illustration G 4897.

Insert retaining ring (1) in ring groove of piston.

Note length of ring gap – ring gap must be within the region of dimension I.

Dimension I = max. 30°.

Install piston with con-rod – see operation "Piston with Con-rod, Remove and Install".

Install cylinder head – see operation "Cylinder Head, Remove and Install".

Install upper part of oil pan – see operation "Oil Pan – Upper Part, Remove and Install".

Install lower part of oil pan – see operation "Lower Part of Oil Pan, Remove and Install".
