Note. See TSB IB00-S005: 3.5L V6 DOHC (6VE1)/3.2L V6 DOHC (6VD1) ENGINES TIMING BELT INSTALLATION for Isuzu. See TSB 02-047: CYLINDER HEAD SERVICE for Honda.

For complete information on installing the DOHC timing belt, for Honda, see TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT - 3.2L - DOHC , for Isuzu, see TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT - 3.2L & 3.5L V6 .

Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-49505-S39856681012001011500000). Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator upper fan shroud. Remove all accessory drive belts. Using Puller (J-8614-01), remove crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley. Remove cooling fan assembly. Remove upper intake manifold. See «UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-49505-S34126452612001011500000).
  2. Remove timing belt. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-49505-S12092104192001011500000). Remove cylinder head covers. See «CYLINDER HEAD COVERS»(ref-49505-S37821940222001011500000). Remove camshaft towers and camshaft. (Scheme 9) Remove camshaft pulley bolt and pulley. On SOHC, remove front plate bolts and front plate. On all engines, mark valve train components for reassembly reference. On DOHC, remove camshaft drive gear retainer.

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. On SOHC, install camshaft with mark facing up. (Scheme 9) On DOHC engine, align mating marks on camshaft drive gears with sub-gear. Left bank has 2 dots and right bank has one dot. A M5 bolt in camshaft drive gear can be tightened to hold camshaft in position. Ensure M5 bolt is released after camshafts timing is complete. (Scheme 10)
  2. On all engines, tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49505-S22979059872001011500000). (Scheme 11)and (Scheme 12). Ensure timing belt installation procedures are followed closely. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-49505-S12092104192001011500000).

Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE . Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove camshaft. See CAMSHAFT . Remove rocker arm assembly retaining bolts and rocker arm assembly.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Tighten rocker assembly bolts in sequence to specification. (Scheme 13) Ensure timing belt installation procedures are followed closely. See TIMING BELT.

Remove transmission. See appropriate TRANSMISSION SERVICING or CLUTCHES article. On M/T, remove clutch assembly and flywheel. On A/T, remove flexplate. On all models, carefully remove seal from seal housing using a seal puller. DO NOT damage sealing surfaces on crankshaft.

  1. Ensure all sealing surfaces are clean. Apply engine oil to lip of oil seal. Using Seal Installer (J-39201), install seal in seal housing. DO NOT reuse flywheel or flexplate bolts. Ensure no oil is present in threads of crankshaft.
  2. Install flywheel. Tighten all bolts to specification. Tighten flywheel bolts in a diagonal pattern. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49505-S22979059872001011500000) . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect battery ground cable. Drain engine coolant from the radiator and engine. Disconnect radiator hose from the inlet pipe. Remove thermostat housing. Remove thermostat.

Inspection

Suspend the thermostat in a water-filled container using thin wire. Place a thermometer next to the thermostat. Do not directly heat the thermostat. Gradually increase the water temperature. Stir the water so that the entire water is same temperature.

Confirm the temperature when the valve first begins to open. Valve opening temperature 74.5C~78.5°C (166.1°F~173.3°F).

Confirm the temperature when the valve is fully opened. Valve full open temperature and lift More than 8.5mm (0.33 in) at 90°C (194°F)

Install thermostat into the outlet pipe making sure that the air hole is in the up position. Install thermostat housing and tighten bolts to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.). Installation rubber hose. Replenish engine coolant. Start engine and check for coolant leakage.
