Engine Controls - Self-Diagnostics: Diagnosis Saab 9-5 I

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

CAUTIONElectronic components used in control systems are designed to carry very low voltages. As little as a 30-volt charge created by static electricity can cause a total or degrading failure in ECM or other electronic components containing integrated circuits. Before servicing such components, ground yourself and work area to discharge stored static electricity. Repeat grounding process periodically during service procedure.

MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) INSPECTION

Note. Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) on instrument panel may also be referred to as CHECK ENGINE light. Inspect MIL to ensure it is operational and will come on if a DTC is stored.

  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. MIL should come on and remain on. If MIL does not come on, check bulb circuit on instrument panel and wiring circuit between MIL and ECM. ECM is located in engine compartment behind partition on left side. (Схема №1), (Схема №3) or (Схема №4). See appropriate wiring diagram in «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-3491) article.
  2. Start engine and ensure MIL goes off. If MIL remains on with engine running, a malfunction is detected. Proceed to «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-2691-S25681352722000041100000).

TESTING & REPAIR PROCEDURE

Following check list of procedures is suggested to be followed to ensure correct diagnosis and repair

  1. Record Customer Complaint Ensure all customer complaints or observations are recorded. Test drive vehicle with customer when necessary for malfunction verification.
  2. Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) Connect TECH 2 scan tool. Retrieve DTCs from ALL systems. See «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-2691-S25681352722000041100000) .
  3. Visual Inspection Inspect all connectors of suspect circuit or component. Ensure all connections are clean and tight.
  4. Confirm Symptoms & DTCs Determine whether customer's complaint corresponds with symptoms related to stored DTCs. If it does, DTC is probably set by primary fault and is not a secondary stored code.
  5. Diagnose & Repair DTCs Perform diagnosis and repair procedures as needed. See applicable «DIAGNOSTIC TESTS»(ref-2691-S42355653582000041100000) . If no codes are present, proceed to «TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES»(ref-3004) article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., rough idle, no start, etc.).
  6. Confirmation Procedure After repairs have been completed, clear all DTCs. See «CLEARING DTCS»(ref-2691-S32790697922000041100000) . Perform road test. Confirm that no DTCs are present and all symptoms and/or complaints have been repaired.

RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

Access Data Link Connector (DLC) under left side of instrument panel. Connect and operate TECH 2 scan tool in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Turn ignition on. Following scan tool manufacturer's instructions, retrieve any DTCs stored in memory. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) table.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

CAUTIONIf ECM replacement is instructed in following testing, always ensure ECM harness connector and ground circuits are okay. If either are suspect, repair and repeat testing to confirm ECM malfunction. Ensure DTCs are diagnosed in numerical order, starting with lowest number first.
