Testing & Diagnostics 1 illustration ~271 words
  1. Turn ignition on. Move selector lever slowly from position "P" to "2", then back. If "3" or "4" are illuminated with lever at "D" (when moving from "2" to "P"), go to next step. If "3" or "4" are not illuminated, go to step 3.
  2. Check selector cable adjustment. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Repair as necessary. If adjustment is okay, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transmission rotary switch harness connector, located on top of transmission (XJ Series), or left side of transmission (XK8). Check continuity between switch terminals "K" (Green wire) and "J" (Brown wire). (Scheme 16) With selector lever at "P" and "N", continuity should exist, With selector lever at "R", "D", "4", "3" or "2", continuity should not exist. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace rotary switch and retest system.
  4. Disconnect ECM harness connector EM10. Check continuity between ECM harness connector EM10 terminal No. 15 (Red/Blue wire on XJ Series; Green wire on XK8) and transmission rotary switch harness connector terminal "K". see scheme 3 If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit and retest system.
  5. Ensure fuse F10 in engine management fuse box is okay. Disconnect engine management fuse box harness connector EM20. Check continuity of White/Red wire between engine management fuse box harness connector EM20 terminal No. 7 and transmission rotary switch harness connector terminal "J". see scheme 12 If continuity exists, system is okay. If continuity does not exist, repair open in White/Red wire and retest system.
