DTC P1393 & P1398: VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SOLENOID HIGH INPUT Jaguar XJR II

  1. Disconnect Variable Valve Timing (VVT) solenoid 2-pin harness connector for bank "A" (DTC P1393) or bank "B" (DTC P1398), located on front of cylinder head. Measure resistance between VVT solenoid terminals. If resistance is 20 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 20 ohms, replace VVT solenoid and retest system.
  2. Remove 10-amp fuse F12 located in engine management fuse box. Disconnect ECM harness connectors EM14 and EM15. Turn ignition on. For DTC P1393, measure voltage between ECM harness connector EM15 terminal No. 9 (Red/Yellow wire) and ECM harness connector EM14 terminal No. 9 (Black wire). (Схема №3) For DTC P1398, measure voltage between ECM harness connector EM15 terminal No. 8 (Red/Green wire) and ECM harness connector EM14 terminal No. 9 (Black wire). If voltage is zero volts, reconnect ECM harness connectors and fuse, then go to next step. If voltage is more than zero volts, repair short to voltage and retest system.
  3. For DTC P1393, measure voltage between bank "A" VVT solenoid harness connector terminal No. 2 (White/Blue wire) and ground point G121 (On XJ Series) or G105 (on XK8). For DTC 1398, measure voltage between bank "B" VVT solenoid harness connector terminal No. 2 (White/Blue wire on XJ Series; White/Purple wire on XK8) and ground point G1211 (On XJ Series) or G105 (on XK8). See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open circuit.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connectors EM14 and EM15. For DTC P1393, measure resistance between ECM harness connector EM15 terminal No. 9 (Red/Yellow wire) and ECM harness connector EM14 terminal No. 9. For DTC P1398, measure resistance between ECM harness connector EM15 terminal No. 8 (Red/Green wire) and ECM harness connector EM14 terminal No. 9. If resistance is more than 10 megohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 megohms or less, repair short to ground and retest system.
  5. Minals No. 8 (Red/Green wire) and No. 9 (Red/Yellow wire). If resistance is more than 10 megohms, system is okay. If resistance is 10 megohms or less, repair short circuit and retest system.
