  1. Remove the right engine mount bracket. Refer to «ENGINE MOUNT BRACKET REPLACEMENT-RIGHT»(ref-187842-S07820206822005090800000) .
  2. Remove the drive belt tensioner assembly. Refer to «DRIVE BELT TENSIONER REPLACEMENT»(ref-187842-S23933905412005090800000) .
  3. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to «CRANKSHAFT BALANCER REPLACEMENT»(ref-187842-S17293796522005090800000) .
  4. Remove the crankshaft sensor shield.
  5. Remove the crankshaft sensor.
  6. Remove the oil pan to engine front cover bolts.
  7. Remove the engine front cover attaching bolts.
  8. Remove the engine front cover.
  9. Inspect the timing chain for overall in and out movement. Movement should not exceed 25 mm (1 in).
  10. Inspect the timing sprockets for wear.
  11. Clean the gasket mating surfaces at the cylinder block.
  12. If the oil pan gasket is excessively swollen, the oil pan must be removed and the gasket replaced.
  13. Clean and inspect the engine front cover. Refer to «ENGINE FRONT COVER CLEANING AND INSPECTION»(ref-187842-S38412247042005090800000) .

  1. Install the engine front cover gasket.
  2. Install the engine front cover.
  3. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent to the bolt threads. NOTE: Refer to «FASTENER NOTICE»(ref-175132-S17785009232005041500000) .
  4. Install the engine front cover attaching bolts. Tighten Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 20 N.m (15 lb ft). Use the J 36660-A in order to rotate the bolts an additional 40 degrees.
  5. Install the oil pan to the engine front cover bolts. Tighten Tighten the oil pan bolts to 14 N.m (125 lb in).
  6. Install the drive belt tensioner assembly. Refer to «DRIVE BELT TENSIONER REPLACEMENT»(ref-187842-S23933905412005090800000) . IMPORTANT: Do not adjust the crankshaft sensor.
  7. Install the crankshaft sensor.
  8. Install the crankshaft sensor shield.
  9. Install the crankshaft balancer and bolt. Refer to «CRANKSHAFT BALANCER REPLACEMENT»(ref-187842-S17293796522005090800000) .
  10. Install the right engine mount bracket. Refer to «ENGINE MOUNT BRACKET REPLACEMENT-RIGHT»(ref-187842-S07820206822005090800000) .

  1. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to «ENGINE FRONT COVER REPLACEMENT»(ref-187842-S10056117112005090800000) .
  2. Remove the oil filter adapter.
  3. Remove the pressure regulator valve and the spring. Refer to «OIL FILTER ADAPTER AND BYPASS VALVE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT»(ref-187842-S18393693062005090800000) .
  4. Remove the oil pump cover attaching screws.
  5. Remove the oil pump cover.
  6. Remove the oil pump gear set.
  7. Clean and inspect the oil pump gear set and housing. Refer to «OIL PUMP CLEANING AND INSPECTION»(ref-187842-S36626064192005090800000) .

Scheme 150: Installation Procedure
  1. Lubricate the oil pump gears with petroleum jelly.
  2. Install the oil pump gear set.
  3. Pack the oil pump gears with petroleum jelly.
  4. Install the oil pump cover. NOTE: Refer to «FASTENER NOTICE»(ref-175132-S17785009232005041500000) .
  5. Install the oil pump cover screws. Tighten Tighten the oil pump cover screws to 11 N.m (98 lb in).
  6. Install the oil filter adapter with a new gasket. Install the pressure regulator valve and the spring. Refer to «OIL FILTER ADAPTER AND BYPASS VALVE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT»(ref-187842-S18393693062005090800000) .
  7. Install the engine front cover. Refer to «ENGINE FRONT COVER REPLACEMENT»(ref-187842-S10056117112005090800000) . NOTE: Do not run the engine until the oil pressure is tested. Running the engine without measurable oil pressure will cause extensive damage. NOTE: Stop the engine and remove the oil pan if the oil pressure does not build up immediately. Check the oil pump pipe and the screen for a clogged screen, damaged pipe, or a damaged gasket. Running the engine without measurable oil pressure will cause extensive damage.
  8. Inspect the oil pressure.
  9. Inspect for the proper fluid levels.
  10. Inspect for leaks.
