The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 2. The inspection is to verify the drive belt is correctly installed on all of the drive belt pulleys. Wear on the drive belt may be caused by mis-positioning the drive belt by one groove on a pulley.
  2. 3. The installation of a drive belt that is two wide or two narrow will cause wear on the drive belt. The drive belt ribs should match all of the grooves on all of the pulleys.
  3. 4. This inspection is to verify the drive belt is not contacting any parts of the engine or body while the engine is operating. There should be sufficient clearance when the drive belt accessory drive components load varies. The drive belt should not come in contact with an engine or a body component when snapping the throttle.

  1. Remove the drive belt tensioner by lifting or rotating the drive belt tensioner off of the drive belt, using a 3/8 inch breaker bar (1).
  2. Remove the drive belt.

  1. Install the drive belt.
  2. Inspect the drive belt and the drive belt system. Refer to «DRIVE BELT EXCESSIVE WEAR DIAGNOSIS»(ref-189348-S09946527762005090900000) . IMPORTANT: Make sure that the drive belt is aligned into the proper grooves of the accessory drive belt pulleys.
  3. Install the drive belt under the drive belt tensioner pulley by lifting or rotating the drive belt tensioner, using a 3/8 inch breaker bar (1).
  4. Ensure that the drive belt is properly routed.
  5. Inspect the drive belt length scale on the drive belt tensioner for the proper installed length.

  1. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to COOLANT RECOVERY RESERVOIR REPLACEMENT in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to «DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT»(ref-189348-S04700214262005090900000) .
  3. Remove the drive belt tensioner bolt.
  4. Remove the drive belt tensioner.

Scheme 38: Installation Procedure
  1. Install the drive belt tensioner. NOTE: Refer to «FASTENER NOTICE»(ref-175132-S17785009232005041500000) in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Install the drive belt tensioner bolt. Tighten Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  3. Install the drive belt. Refer to «DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT»(ref-189348-S04700214262005090900000) .
  4. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to COOLANT RECOVERY RESERVOIR REPLACEMENT in Engine Cooling.
