Engine Control System [1AR-FE] [Service Information]: Removal & Installation Toyota Sienna III

INSTALLATION

  1. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the oil control valve. Install the oil control valve with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (connecting surface with cylinder head cover). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the oil control valve. Connect the oil control valve connector.
  2. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the oil control valve. Install the oil control valve with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (connecting surface with cylinder head cover). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the oil control valve. Connect the oil control valve connector.
  3. INSPECT FOR OIL LEAK Start the engine and check that there are no oil leaks.
  4. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 75»(ref-494104-S33164980762012081000000)

  1. REMOVE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR AND LINK ASSEMBLY Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-494141-S07171082372012081000000)
  2. REMOVE AIR CLEANER INLET ASSEMBLY . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 22»(ref-494104-S25764736332012081000000)
  3. REMOVE BATTERY . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 23»(ref-494104-S25764736332012081000000)

  5. REMOVE ECM Disengage the wire harness clamp. While slightly pushing portion A of the lever of the ECM connector, turn the lever until it makes a click sound. Disconnect the 2 ECM connectors. NOTE: After disconnecting the connectors, make sure that dirt, water or other foreign matter does not contact the connecting part of the connectors. Remove the 3 bolts and the ECM with the brackets.
  6. REMOVE ECM BRACKET Remove the 2 screws and the ECM bracket.
  7. REMOVE NO. 2 ECM BRACKET Remove the 3 screws and the No. 2 ECM bracket.

Scheme 102: INSTALLATION
  1. INSTALL ECM BRACKET Install the ECM bracket to the ECM with the 2 screws.
  2. INSTALL NO. 2 ECM BRACKET Install the No. 2 ECM bracket to the ECM with the 3 screws.
  3. INSTALL ECM Install the ECM with the 3 bolts. Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) Pull down the lever to engage the lock and connect the 2 connectors to the ECM. NOTE: Make sure that the 2 levers are securely locked. When connecting the connectors, make sure that dirt, water or other foreign matter does not become stuck between the connectors and other parts. Engage the wire harness clamp to the ECM bracket.
  4. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY See step 5
  5. INSTALL BATTERY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 46»(ref-494104-S33164980762012081000000)

  8. PERFORM INITIALIZATION HINT: Initialization cannot be completed by only disconnecting and reconnecting the cable of the negative (-) battery terminal. Perform Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) registration. Refer to «REGISTRATION»(ref-493953-S08840987992012081000000) . Register the ECM communication ID for the immobilizer system when replacing the ECM. Refer to «REGISTRATION»(ref-493955-S21275878882012081000000) . Perform Initialization when replacing the ECM. See step 13 .

  1. INSTALL ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY Install the accelerator pedal sensor assembly with the 2 nuts. Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf) NOTE: Avoid physical shocks to the accelerator pedal sensor assembly. Connect the accelerator pedal sensor assembly connector.

  1. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 21»(ref-494104-S25764736332012081000000)
  2. REMOVE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (for Exhaust Side) Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector. Remove the bolt and the sensor.
  3. REMOVE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (for Intake Side) Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector. Remove the bolt and the sensor.

  1. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector. Remove the bolt and the sensor.

  1. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Crankshaft Position Sensor) Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 Cold 1630 to 2740 ohms Hot 2065 to 3225 ohms HINT: In the table above, the terms "Cold" and "Hot" refer to the temperature of the coils. "Cold" means approximately -10 to 50°C (14 to 122°F). "Hot" means approximately 50 to 100°C (122 to 212°F). If the result is not as specified, replace the crankshaft position sensor.
  1. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the sensor. NOTE: Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or does not jump out of position during installation. Apply adhesive to 2 or 3 threads of the bolt. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Adhesive Adhesive Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent. Install the sensor with the bolt. Torque: 6.5 N*m (66 kgf*cm, 58 in.*lbf) Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
  2. INSPECT FOR OIL LEAK Start the engine and check that there are no oil leaks.

  1. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 21»(ref-494104-S25764736332012081000000)
  2. REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY Disconnect the 4 ignition coil connectors. Remove the 4 bolts and the 4 ignition coils.
  3. REMOVE SPARK PLUG Using a 16 mm spark plug wrench, remove the 4 spark plugs. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 16 mm Spark Plug Wrench
  1. INSTALL SPARK PLUG Using a 16 mm spark plug wrench, install the 4 spark plugs. Torque: 25 N*m (255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf)
  2. INSTALL IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY Install the 4 ignition coils with the 4 bolts. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) Connect the 4 ignition coil connectors.
  3. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 75»(ref-494104-S33164980762012081000000)

  1. INSPECT ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor) - - Partially immerse the sensor in water and warm up the water. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 Approximately 20°C (68°F) 2.32 to 2.59 kohms Approximately 80°C (176°F) 0.310 to 0.326 kohms NOTE: When checking the sensor in water, keep the terminals dry. After the check, wipe the sensor dry. If the result is not as specified, replace the engine coolant temperature sensor.
  1. INSTALL ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR Install a new gasket onto the engine coolant temperature sensor. Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, install the engine coolant temperature sensor. Torque: 20 N*m (200 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf) Connect the engine coolant temperature sensor connector.
  2. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY See step 5
  3. INSTALL BATTERY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 46»(ref-494104-S33164980762012081000000)

TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Air Fuel Ratio Sensor) Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (HA1A) - 2 (+B) 20°C (68°F) 1.6 to 3.2 ohms 1 (HA1A) - 4 (A1A-) Always 10 kohms or higher If the result is not as specified, replace the air fuel ratio sensor.

  1. INSTALL AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR Using SST, install the air fuel ratio sensor to the exhaust manifold. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Fulcrum Length 30 mm *b Fulcrum Length 300 mm SST: 09224-00010 without SST Torque: 44 N*m (449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) with SST Torque: 40 N*m (408 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf) HINT: The "with SST" torque value is effective when using SST with a fulcrum length of 30 mm (1.18 in.). The "with SST" torque value is effective when using a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 300 mm (11.81 in.). Refer to «PRECAUTION»(ref-493943-S27942734662012081000000) . This torque value is effective when SST is parallel to the torque wrench. Connect the air fuel ratio sensor connector.

TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Fulcrum Length 30 mm *b Fulcrum Length 300 mm SST: 09224-00010 without SST Torque: 44 N*m (449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) with SST Torque: 40 N*m (408 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf) HINT: The "with SST" torque value is effective when using SST with a fulcrum length of 30 mm (1.18 in.). The "with SST" torque value is effective when using a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 300 mm (11.81 in.). Refer to «PRECAUTION»(ref-493943-S27942734662012081000000) .   1. INSPECT EFI MAIN RELAY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 3 - 5 Battery voltage not applied 10 kohms or higher 3 - 5 Battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the relay.
  2. INSPECT C/OPN RELAY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 3 - 5 Battery voltage not applied 10 kohms or higher 3 - 5 Battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the relay.
  3. INSPECT IG2 RELAY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 3 - 5 Battery voltage not applied 10 kohms or higher 3 - 5 Battery voltage applied to terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the relay.
  4. INSPECT AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR HEATER RELAY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
