ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on. Inspect the oil control valve (for intake side). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1). Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the Techstream with the engine coolant temperature at 50°C (122°F) or less. HINT: When performing the Active Test, the air conditioning should be on. Engine coolant temperature when the engine is started should be 30°C (86°F) or less. OK Tester Operation Specified Condition OFF Normal engine speed ON Soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON, engine idles roughly or stalls If the result is not as specified, check the oil control valve, wire harness and ECM. Inspect the oil control valve (for exhaust side). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1). Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the Techstream with the engine coolant temperature at 50°C (122°F) or less. HINT: When performing the Active Test, the air conditioning should be on. Engine coolant temperature when engine is started should be 30°C (86°F) or less. OK Tester Operation Specified Condition 100% Soon after OCV switched from OFF (-100%) to ON (+100%), engine idles roughly or stalls. -100% Normal engine speed If the result is not as specified, check the oil control valve, wire harness and ECM.

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve Assembly) Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Connect the positive (+) lead from a battery to terminal 1 and the negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check the movement of the valve. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Battery *2 Spool Valve *a Component without harness connected (Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve Assembly) OK Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 Battery positive (+) voltage is applied Valve moves in direction of left arrow shown in the illustration Battery positive (+) voltage is cut off Valve moves in direction or right arrow shown in the illustration If the result is not as specified, replace the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. NOTE: Accumulation of foreign matter can cause minor pressure leaks. Minor pressure leaks will cause the camshaft to advance or retard, and this will cause a DTC to be set.
  1. INSPECT THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle control motor operating sounds. Turn the ignition switch to ON. When pressing the accelerator pedal, check the operating sound of the running motor. Make sure that no friction noises are emitted from the motor. If friction noise exists, replace the throttle with motor body assembly. Check the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Throttle Sensor Position. Depress the accelerator pedal. When the throttle valve is fully opened, check that the value of "Throttle Sensor Position" is within the specification. Standard Throttle Valve Opening Percentage 60% or more NOTE: When checking the standard throttle valve opening percentage, make sure the shift lever is in neutral. If the percentage is less than 60%, replace the throttle with motor body assembly.

  7. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY Disengage the wire harness clamp. Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector. Disengage the 2 wire harness clamps. Disconnect the vacuum switching valve connector. Disengage the hose clamp and separate the vacuum hose. Disconnect the vacuum hose. Loosen the hose clip and disconnect the air cleaner hose. Remove the 2 bolts and the air cleaner assembly.
  8. REMOVE AIR CLEANER HOSE Loosen the clip and disconnect the No. 1 air hose. Loosen the clip and disconnect the ventilation hose assembly. Separate the No. 2 fuel vapor feed hose from the hose clamp. Separate the vacuum hose from the hose clamp. Separate the No. 2 vacuum switching valve assembly. Separate the No. 1 air hose from the 2 hose clamps. Separate the vacuum hose from the hose clamp. Loosen the hose clip and remove the No. 1 air cleaner hose.
  9. DISCONNECT WATER BY-PASS HOSE Loosen the clip and disconnect the water bypass hose.
  10. DISCONNECT NO. 2 WATER BY-PASS HOSE Loosen the clip and disconnect the No. 2 water bypass hose.
  11. REMOVE THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the throttle body connector. Separate the fuel tube from the fuel hose bracket. Remove the 4 bolts and the throttle with motor body assembly. Remove the bolt and fuel hose bracket. Remove the gasket from the intake manifold.

  1. INSPECT THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Throttle with Motor Body Assembly) Check that the throttle valve opens and closes smoothly. Check that there is no sludge accumulating around the throttle body. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle with motor body assembly.

  1. INSTALL THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Install a new gasket onto the intake manifold. Install the fuel hose bracket with the bolt. Torque: 7.0 N*m (71 kgf*cm, 62 in.*lbf) Install the throttle with motor body assembly to the intake manifold with the 4 bolts. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) Connect the throttle body connector. Install the fuel tube to the fuel hose bracket.
  2. CONNECT NO. 2 WATER BY-PASS HOSE Connect the No. 2 water bypass hose with the clip. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a View A *b Upper *c Paint Mark HINT: Connect the hose so that the direction of the hose clip is as indicated in the illustration.
  3. CONNECT WATER BY-PASS HOSE Connect the water bypass hose with the clip. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a View A *b Upper *c Paint Mark HINT: Connect the hose so that the direction of the hose clip is as indicated in the illustration.
  4. INSTALL AIR CLEANER HOSE Install the No. 1 air cleaner hose with the hose clip. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a View A *b LH *c Front of Vehicle HINT: Connect the hose so that the direction of the hose clip is as indicated in the illustration. Install the vacuum hose to the hose clamp. Install the No. 1 air hose to the 2 hose clamps. Install the No. 2 vacuum switching valve assembly to the No. 1 air cleaner hose. Install the vacuum hose to the hose clamp. Install the No. 2 fuel vapor feed hose to the hose clamp. Connect the ventilation hose assembly to the No. 1 air cleaner hose with the clip. Connect the No. 1 air hose to the No. 1 air cleaner hose with the clip.
  5. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY Insert the tab of the air cleaner assembly to the hole of the vehicle body as shown in the illustration. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Tab *b Hole Install the air cleaner assembly with the 2 bolts. Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf) Connect the No. 1 air cleaner hose to the air cleaner assembly with the hose clip. Connect the vacuum hose to the air cleaner assembly. Engage the hose clamp and install the vacuum hose. Connect the vacuum switching valve connector. Engage the 2 wire harness clamps to the air cleaner assembly. Connect the mass air flow meter connector. Engage the wire harness clamp to the air cleaner assembly.
  6. INSTALL AIR CLEANER INLET ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 47»(ref-494104-S33164980762012081000000)
  7. ADD ENGINE COOLANT . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 3»(ref-494108-S38266537962012081000000)
  8. INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK . Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 1»(ref-494143-S03228198252012081000000)
  9. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 75»(ref-494104-S33164980762012081000000)
  10. INSTALL COWL PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 12»(ref-494142-S39362593912012081000000)

  13. PERFORM INITIALIZATION NOTE: Perform the following procedure after replacing the ECM, throttle with motor body assembly or any throttle body components. The following procedure should also be performed if the throttle body is cleaned. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Wait at least 60 seconds and reconnect the cable. NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-493943-S13306943882012081000000) . Turn the ignition switch to ON without operating the accelerator pedal. NOTE: If the accelerator pedal is operated, perform the above steps again. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-493953-S27327777792012081000000) . Start the engine and check that the MIL is not illuminated. After the engine is warmed up, check that the idle speed is within the specified range when the A/C is switched off. Standard Condition Engine Idle Speed A/C switched off 600 to 700 RPM NOTE: Be sure to perform this step with all accessories off. Make sure that the shift lever is in neutral. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Throttle Sensor Position. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and check that the value is 60% or more. Perform a road test and confirm that there are no abnormalities.

  1. INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Accel Sensor Out No. 1 and Accel Sensor Out No. 2. Read the values displayed on the Techstream. Standard Voltage Tester Display Condition Specified Condition Accel Sensor Out No. 1 Accelerator pedal is released 0.5 to 1.1 V Accelerator pedal is fully depressed 2.6 to 4.5 V Accel Sensor Out No. 2 Accelerator pedal is released 1.2 to 2.0 V Accelerator pedal is fully depressed 3.4 to 4.98 V If the result is not as specified, check the accelerator pedal sensor assembly, wire harness or ECM.

Scheme 91: REMOVAL
  1. REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY Disconnect the accelerator pedal sensor assembly connector. Remove the 2 nuts and the accelerator pedal sensor assembly. NOTE: Avoid physical shocks to the accelerator pedal sensor assembly. Do not disassemble the accelerator pedal sensor assembly.

Note. Perform the MAF meter inspection according to the following procedure. Only replace the MAF meter when the MAF value in the Data List (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range or there is foreign matter on the MAF meter platinum hot wire (heater).

  1. INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER Read the values using the Techstream (MAF). NOTE: Perform the inspection with the vehicle indoors and on a level surface. Perform the inspection of the MAF meter while it is installed to the air cleaner case (installed to the vehicle). During the test, do not use an exhaust air duct on the exhaust pipe. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not run the engine). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / MAF. Wait for 30 seconds, and read the values on the Techstream. Standard Tester Display Condition Specified Condition MAF Engine not running 30 seconds after ignition switch turned to ON 0.53 gm/sec or less If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-493956-S01163412562012081000000) . If the result is within the specified range, remove and inspect the mass air flow meter. See step 1 .

Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
