ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on. Inspect the oil control valve (for intake camshaft). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1). Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the Techstream with the engine coolant temperature at 50°C (122°F) or less. HINT: When performing the active test, the air conditioning should be on. Engine coolant temperature when the engine is started should be 30°C (86°F) or less. Standard Condition Tester Operation Specified Condition OCV is OFF Normal engine speed OCV is ON Soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON, engine idles roughly or stalls Inspect the oil control valve (for exhaust camshaft). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1). Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the Techstream with the engine coolant temperature at 50°C (122°F) or less. HINT: When performing the active test, the air conditioning should be on. Engine coolant temperature when engine is started should be 30°C (86°F) or less. Standard Condition Tester Operation Specified Condition 100% Soon after OCV switched from OFF (-100%) to ON (+100%), engine idles roughly or stalls. -100% Normal engine speed

- REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.
- REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.

- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. Connect a battery positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check the movement of the valve. OK Condition Specified Condition Battery positive (+) voltage is applied Valve moves in left arrow direction shown in illustration Battery positive (+) voltage is cut off Valve moves in right arrow direction shown in illustration Please confirm direction of movement in the event of a leak.

- INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring, and install it to the oil control valve. Install the oil control valve with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (connecting surface with cylinder head cover). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the oil control valve. Connect the oil control valve connector.
- INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring, and install it to the oil control valve. Install the oil control valve with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (connecting surface with cylinder head cover). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the oil control valve. Connect the oil control valve connector.
- INSPECT FOR OIL LEAK

- CHECK THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle control motor operating sounds. Turn the ignition switch to ON. When pressing the accelerator pedal, check the operating sound of the running motor. Make sure that no friction noises are emitted from the motor. If friction noise exists, replace the throttle body. Check the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Throttle Sensor Position. Depress the accelerator pedal. When the throttle valve is fully opened, check that the value of "Throttle Sensor Position" is within the specification. Standard throttle valve opening percentage 60% or more NOTE: When checking the standard throttle valve opening percentage, make sure the shift lever is in N. If the percentage is less than 60%, replace the throttle body assembly.

- REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector and separate the hose from hose clamp. Disconnect the ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover. Disconnect the hose from the air cleaner cap sub-assembly and the hose clamp. Disconnect the 2 vacuum hoses from the air cleaner cap sub-assembly. Separate the 2 vacuum hoses from the 2 hose clamps. Unlock the hose band and separate the air cleaner cap sub-assembly from the throttle body assembly. Remove the 2 bolts and air cleaner cap sub-assembly.
- REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the throttle body assembly connector. Disconnect the fuel tube from the clamp. Disconnect the 2 water by-pass hoses from the throttle body assembly. Remove the 4 bolts and the throttle body assembly with the fuel tube bracket. Remove the bolt and fuel tube bracket. Remove the gasket from the intake manifold.

- INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check that the throttle valve opens and closes smoothly. Check that there is no sludge accumulating around the throttle body. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle body assembly.
- CHECK ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Check the voltage. Connect Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream main switch on. Select the menu items: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Accel Sensor Out No. 1, Accel Sensor Out No. 2. Operate the accelerator pedal assembly, and then check that the Accelerator Position No. 1 and Accelerator Position No. 2 values are within the specifications. Standard Voltage (Accel Sensor Out No. 1) Accelerator Pedal Assembly Condition Specified Condition Released 0.5 to 1.1 V Depressed 2.6 to 4.5 V Standard Voltage (Accel Sensor Out No. 2) Accelerator Pedal Assembly Condition Specified Condition Released 1.2 to 2.0 V Depressed 3.4 to 4.98 V If the result is not as specified, check the accelerator pedal assembly, wire harness or ECM.

- REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Disconnect the accelerator pedal assembly connector. Remove the 2 nuts and accelerator pedal assembly.
Note. Perform the MAF meter inspection according to the procedure below. Only replace the MAF meter when the MAF value in the Data List (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range or there is foreign matter on the MAF meter platinum hot wire (heater).
- INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY NOTE: Perform the inspection with the vehicle indoors and on a level surface. Perform the inspection of the MAF meter while it is installed to the air cleaner case (installed to the vehicle). During the test, do not use the exhaust air duct to perform suction on the exhaust pipe. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not run the engine). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / MAF. Wait 30 seconds, and read the values on the Techstream. Standard Item Condition Specified Condition MAF Engine not running 30 seconds after turning ignition switch to ON Less than 0.71 g/sec. If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly. If the result is as specified, inspect the mass air flow meter sub-assembly, refer to «INSPECTION»(ref-422454-S10823200122011092600000) .

- REMOVE MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector. Remove the 2 screws and mass air flow meter.

- INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Perform a visual check for any foreign matter on the platinum hot wire (heater) of the mass air flow meter shown in the illustration. OK There is no foreign material. Check the intake air temperature sensor (built into the mass air flow meter). Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (THA) - 2 (E2) -20°C (-4°F) 13.6 to 18.4 kohms 1 (THA) - 2 (E2) 20°C (68°F) 2.21 to 2.69 kohms 1 (THA) - 2 (E2) 60°C (140°F) 0.49 to 0.67 kohms If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly.
- INSPECT C/OPN RELAY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 3 - 5 No battery voltage applied 10 kohms or higher Battery voltage applied between terminals 1 and 2 Below 1 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the relay.
