Starter, Disassemble
Remove starter - see operation "Starter, Remove and Install" in this group.
Unbolt field winding connection from starter switch.
Unscrew starter switch fastening bolts. Then detach starter switch from starter lever and remove from starter (see illus. I).
Remove torsion spring, piston and shim from starter switch (see illus. II).
Unscrew through bolts from starter frame and remove frame lid from starter frame (see illus. III).
Remove assembly of starter frame with armature, carbon brush holder and corresponding O-ring from frame (see illus. IV).
Release brush springs using suitable assembly tool (ad hoc wire hook) and remove carbon brushes from their holders.
Note brush springs!
Remove carbon brush holder from starter frame.
Remove armature shaft with bearings from starter frame.
Unscrew bolts of bearing bracket ring from the engaging housing. Remove bearing bracket ring from engaging housing. Pull freewheel completely out of engaging housing.
Carefully lever rubber support out of starter housing using screwdriver or other suitable tool; do not damage housing walls or rubber support (see illus. I).
Remove starter lever from housing.
Drive retaining ring (1) back on armature shaft with suitable tool (pipe).
Press return spring over retaining ring with suitable open-ended wrench. Remove snap ring with suitable tool (see illus. III).
Remove retaining ring and return spring from pinion gear shaft.
Unscrew pinion gear shaft from overrunning clutch (see illus. I).
Lever off small ball bearing from overrunning clutch hollow shaft using two screwdrivers (see illus. II).
Remove large ball bearing and hollow shaft from reduction gear with suitable assembly sleeve (see illus. III).
Note spacer washer and spacer ring.
Remove hollow shaft from large ball bearing using suitable assembly sleeve (see illus. II).
Detach large ball bearing on collector side from armature shaft with Claw Remover KM-161-B (see illus. II).
Remove small ball bearing on winding side from armature shaft using bearing puller (see illus. III).
