Compact Alternator, Disassemble (Delco-Remy)
Loosen pulley nut. Remove pulley and spacer washer from armature shaft.
Counterhold pulley with commercially available locking band (see illus. I).
Loosen bolts from housing cover (1, see illus. II). Remove housing cover from alternator.
Unscrew condenser from brush holder (2, see illus. III).
Disconnect plug connection between brush holder and electronic regulator (see illus. I).
Remove bolt from brush holder (1, see illus. II).
Lift carbon brushes from slip rings (see illus. III) and remove brush holder from housing.
Do not damage carbon brushes and slip rings when removing brush holder!
Remove bolts from electronic regulator (1, see illus. I).
Note different types of bolts!
Solder off soldered connection between electronic regulator and rectifier bridge. Remove electronic regulator.
To avoid overheating of the diodes during soldering off, hold connecting cable with flat pliers - this conducts heat away (see illus. II).
Remove bolts from rectifier bridge (2, see illus. III).
Solder off rectifier bridge from stator winding and remove.
To avoid overheating of the diodes during soldering off, hold connecting cable with flat pliers - this conducts heat away (see illus. I).
Remove insulation from winding ends (see illus. II).
Mark position of housing halves to each other (see illus. III).
Remove through bolts from alternator (1, see illus. I).
Remove rear housing with stator winding and armature shaft from front housing (see illus. II).
Remove spacer washer (2) and fan pulley (3) from armature shaft (see illus. III).
Remove stator winding from rear housing.
Place housing on suitable rest. Press out armature shaft with dust cap and bearing (see illus.).
Remove bearing from armature shaft only if defective. Do not re-install bearing removed from armature shaft.
Remove dust cap and bearing with commercially available bearing puller from armature shaft.
