Alternator

The new C 16 XE engine uses a new alternator - the so-called compact alternator, already used in the Vectra/Cavalier and Calibra.

Design

The new compact alternator is double-flow ventilated

The 12-pin self-starting alternator with synchronized rotors has small slip rings and rectifiers with Z rectifier diodes.

The stator houses the 3-phase winding and the excitation system is in the rotor.

Basic equipment is the 70-A compact alternator.

100-A compact alternators are available for vehicles with air conditioning optional equipment.

Functioning

The current generated in the windings is apportioned as follows:

Partial current is rectified by the rectifier diodes and guided to the excitation system and the electronic field regulator via terminal D+, the carbon brushes and the slip rings.

The main current, after flowing through the rectifier diodes (in three phase bridge circuit), is led as operating current via terminal B+ to the battery and consumers.

Description of Individual Components

The components of the alternator are described in detail in the "New Technical Features and Information, Product Description Model Year 1993" brochure, KTA-1639-GB, Art.-Nr. 93752 and apply analogously.
