- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is about 176°F (80°C) or more, or 0.78 V or less indicated? YES - Go to step 6 . NO - Go to step 3 .
- Note the value of ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
- Check ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Did ECT SENSOR 1 change 18°F (10°C) or more? YES - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at ECT sensor 1 and the PCM. NO - Go to step 11 .
- Note the value of ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS.
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Open the hood, and let the engine cool for 3 hours.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Did ECT SENSOR 1 change 18°F (10°C) or more? YES - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at ECT sensor 1 and the PCM. NO - Go to step 11 .
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Replace ECT sensor 1 (see «ECT SENSOR 1 REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S15107920842006022100000) ).
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
- Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P0116 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at ECT sensor 1 and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTSs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.

- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is about 356°F (180°C) or more, or 0.08 V or less indicated? YES - Go to step 3 . NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at ECT sensor 1 and the PCM.
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Disconnect ECT sensor 1 2P connector.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is about 356°F (180°C) or more, or 0.08 V or less indicated? YES - Go to step 7 . NO - Go to step 11 .
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
- Disconnect PCM connector C (44P).
- Check for continuity between ECT sensor 1 2P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short in the wire between ECT sensor 1 and the PCM (C27), then go to step 13 . NO - Go to step 18 .
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Replace ECT sensor 1 (see «ECT SENSOR 1 REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S15107920842006022100000) ).
- Reconnect all connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
- Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P0117 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at ECT sensor 1 and the PCM, then go to step 19 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
- Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM (see «PCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-220945-S16531944742006022100000) ).
- Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P0117 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at ECT sensor 1 and the PCM, then go to step 19 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. NO - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S32339521312006022100000) ).

- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is about -40°F (-40°C) or less, or 4.92 V or more indicated? YES - Go to step 3 . NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at ECT sensor 1 and the PCM.
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Disconnect ECT sensor 1 2P connector.
- Connect ECT sensor 1 2P connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2 with a jumper wire.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Check ECT SENSOR 1 in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is about -40°F (-40°C) or less, or 4.92 V or more indicated? YES - Go to step 8 . NO - Go to step 20 .
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Remove the jumper wire.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Measure voltage between ECT sensor 1 2P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground. Is there about 5 V? YES - Go to step 12 . NO - Go to step 16 .
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
- Disconnect PCM connector C (44P).
- Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C14 and ECT sensor 1 2P connector terminal No. 2. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 27 . NO - Repair open in the wire between the PCM (C14) and ECT sensor 1, then go to step 22 .
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
- Disconnect PCM connector C (44P).
- Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C27 and ECT sensor 1 2P connector terminal No. 1. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 27 . NO - Repair open in the wire between the PCM (C27) and ECT sensor 1, then go to step 22 .
- Turn the ignition switch OFF.
- Replace ECT sensor 1 (see «ECT SENSOR 1 REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S15107920842006022100000) ).
- Reconnect all connectors.
- Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- Reset the PCM with the HDS.
- Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
- Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P0118 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at ECT sensor 1 and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
