DTC P1684: Throttle Valve Return Spring Performance Problem Honda Odyssey III

CAUTIONDo not insert your fingers into the installed throttle body when you turn the ignition switch ON (II) or while the ignition switch is ON (II). If you do, you will seriously injure your fingers. If the throttle valve is activated.

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  3. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.
  4. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait 10 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  6. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC P1684 indicated? YES - Go to step 7. NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the throttle body and the PCM.
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  8. Disconnect the intake air duct from the throttle body.
  9. Push the throttle valve open (Scheme 204)
  10. Release the throttle valve. Does the throttle valve return? YES - Clean the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(ref-220953-S27185000352006022200000) ), then go to step 12. NO - Go to step 11.
  11. Replace the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-220953-S20883818412006022200000) ).
  12. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  13. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
  14. Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
  15. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait 10 seconds.
  16. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  17. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P1684 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the throttle body and the PCM, then go to step 1. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.

Scheme 205: DTC P2101: Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) Malfunction

  1. Record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot with the HDS.
  2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  3. Do the ETCS TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
  4. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC P2101 indicated? YES - Go to step 7 . NO - Go to step 5 .
  5. Test-drive the vehicle for several minutes in the range of these recorded freeze data parameters: Engine speed Vehicle speed Accelerator position
  6. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Is DTC P2101 indicated? YES - Go to step 7 . NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the throttle body and at the PCM, then clean the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(ref-220953-S27185000352006022200000) ).
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  8. Disconnect the intake air duct from the throttle body.
  9. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  10. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  11. Do the ETCS TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS.
  12. Visually check the throttle valve operation. NOTE: Be careful not to pinch your fingers during the check. Does the throttle valve operate smoothly? YES - Clean the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(ref-220953-S27185000352006022200000) ), then go to step 21 and recheck. If DTC P2101 is indicated, go to step 19 . NO - Go to step 13 .
  13. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  14. Disconnect the throttle body 6P connector.
  15. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  16. Disconnect PCM connector C (44P).
  17. Connect throttle body 6P connector terminals No. 5 and No. 6 with a jumper wire.
  18. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminals C2 and C3. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 26 . NO - Repair open in the wires between the throttle body and the PCM (C2, C3), then go to step 20 .
  19. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  20. Replace the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-220953-S20883818412006022200000) ).
  21. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  22. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
  23. Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
  24. Test-drive the vehicle for several minutes in the range of these recorded freeze data parameters: Engine speed Vehicle speed Accelerator position
  25. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2101 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the throttle body and the PCM, then clean the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(ref-220953-S27185000352006022200000) ), and go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
  26. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM (see «PCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-220945-S16531944742006022100000) ).
  27. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2101 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the throttle body and the PCM, then clean the throttle body (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(ref-220953-S27185000352006022200000) ), and go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S32339521312006022100000) ).

  1. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  2. Disconnect PCM connector C (44P).
  3. Measure resistance between PCM connector terminals C2 and C3. Is there about 1.0 ohm or less? YES - Go to step 4 . NO - Go to step 15 .
  4. Disconnect the throttle body 6P connector.
  5. At the throttle body side, measure resistance between throttle body 6P connector terminals No. 5 and No. 6 with the throttle fully closed. Is there about 1.0 ohm or less? YES - Go to step 6 . NO - Repair short in the wires between the throttle body and PCM (C2, C3), then go to step 7 .
  6. Replace the throttle body (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S32339521312006022100000) ).
  7. Reconnect all connectors.
  8. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  9. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
  10. Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
  11. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  12. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  13. Slowly press the accelerator pedal to the floor.
  14. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2118 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the throttle body and the PCM, then go to step 16 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
  15. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM (see «PCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-220945-S16531944742006022100000) ).
  16. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2118 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the throttle body and the PCM, then go to step 16 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S32339521312006022100000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check APP SENSOR A in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is there about 0.2 V or less? YES - Go to step 3 . NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor A and the PCM.
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4. Disconnect APP sensor A/B 6P connector.
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  6. At the wire harness side, measure voltage between APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminals No. 2 and No. 3. Is there about 5 V? YES - Go to step 7 . NO - Go to step 17 .
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  8. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  9. Disconnect PCM connector A (44P).
  10. At the wire harness side, check for continuity between APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short in the wire between APP sensor A and the PCM (A17), then go to step 23 . NO - Go to step 11 .
  11. Connect APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminal No. 1 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  12. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal A17 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 13 . NO - Repair open in the wire between APP sensor A and the PCM (A17), then go to step 23 .
  13. Reconnect PCM connector A (44P).
  14. At the wire harness side, connect APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminals No. 3 and No. 1 with a jumper wire.
  15. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  16. Check APP SENSOR A in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is there 0.2 V or less? YES - Go to step 28 . NO - Go to step 22 .
  17. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  18. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  19. Disconnect PCM connector A (44P).
  20. Connect APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminal No. 3 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  21. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal A24 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 28 . NO - Repair open in the wire between APP sensor A and the PCM (A24), then go to step 23 .
  22. Replace accelerator pedal (see «ACCELERATOR PEDAL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-220953-S12746817652006022200000) ).
  23. Reconnect all connectors.
  24. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  25. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
  26. Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
  27. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2122 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor A and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
  28. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM (see «PCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-220945-S16531944742006022100000) ).
  29. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2122 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor A and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S32339521312006022100000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check APP SENSOR A in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is there about 4.9 V or more? YES - Go to step 3 . NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor A and the PCM.
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4. Disconnect APP sensor A/B 6P connector.
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  6. At the wire harness side, measure voltage between APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminals No. 2 and No. 3. Is there about 5 V? YES - Go to step 12 . NO - Go to step 7 .
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  8. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  9. Disconnect PCM connector A (44P).
  10. Connect APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminal No. 2 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  11. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal A34 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 19 . NO - Repair open in the wire between APP sensor A and the PCM (A34), then go to step 14 .
  12. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  13. Replace the accelerator pedal (see «ACCELERATOR PEDAL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-220953-S12746817652006022200000) ).
  14. Reconnect all connectors.
  15. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  16. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
  17. Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
  18. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2123 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor A and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
  19. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM (see «PCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-220945-S16531944742006022100000) ).
  20. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2123 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor A and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S32339521312006022100000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check APP SENSOR B in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is there about 0.2 V or less? YES - Go to step 3 . NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor B and the PCM.
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4. Disconnect APP sensor A/B 6P connector.
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  6. At the wire harness side, measure voltage between APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminals No. 5 and No. 6. Is there about 5 V? YES - Go to step 7 . NO - Go to step 17 .
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  8. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  9. Disconnect PCM connector A (44P).
  10. At the wire harness side, check for continuity between APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminal No. 4 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Repair short in the wire between APP sensor B and the PCM (A18), then go to step 24 . NO - Go to step 11 .
  11. Connect APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminal No. 4 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  12. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal A18 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 13 . NO - Repair open in the wire between APP sensor B and the PCM (A18), then go to step 24 .
  13. Reconnect PCM connector A (44P).
  14. At the wire harness side, connect APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminals No. 6 and No. 4 with a jumper wire.
  15. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  16. Check APP SENSOR B in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is there about 0.2 V or less? YES - Go to step 29 . NO - Go to step 22 .
  17. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  18. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  19. Disconnect PCM connector A (44P).
  20. Connect APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminal No. 6 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  21. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal A25 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 29 . NO - Repair open in the wire between APP sensor B and the PCM (A25), then go to step 24 .
  22. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  23. Replace the accelerator pedal (see «ACCELERATOR PEDAL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-220953-S12746817652006022200000) ).
  24. Reconnect all connectors.
  25. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  26. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
  27. Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
  28. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2127 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor B and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
  29. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM (see «PCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-220945-S16531944742006022100000) ).
  30. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2127 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor B and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S32339521312006022100000) ).

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  2. Check APP SENSOR B in the DATA LIST with the HDS. Is there about 4.0 V or more? YES - Go to step 3 . NO - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor B and the PCM.
  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  4. Disconnect the APP sensor A/B 6P connector.
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  6. At the wire harness side, measure voltage between APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminals No. 5 and No. 6. Is there about 5 V? YES - Go to step 12 . NO - Go to step 7 .
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  8. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  9. Disconnect PCM connector A (44P).
  10. Connect APP sensor A/B 6P connector terminal No. 5 to body ground with a jumper wire.
  11. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal A35 and body ground. Is there continuity? YES - Go to step 19 . NO - Repair open in the wire between APP sensor B and the PCM (A35), then go to step 14 .
  12. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  13. Replace the accelerator pedal (see «ACCELERATOR PEDAL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(ref-220953-S12746817652006022200000) ).
  14. Reconnect all connectors.
  15. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  16. Reset the PCM with the HDS.
  17. Do the PCM idle learn procedure (see «PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE»(ref-220951-S17680691112006022100000) ).
  18. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2128 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor B and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - Troubleshooting is complete.
  19. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM (see «PCM UPDATING AND SUBSTITUTION FOR TESTING»(ref-220945-S16531944742006022100000) ).
  20. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS. Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? YES - If DTC P2128 is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at APP sensor B and the PCM, then go to step 1 . If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. NO - If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM (see «PCM REPLACEMENT»(ref-220946-S32339521312006022100000) ).
