Breakout Box, Control Module - Activation & Connection: Other Volvo V70 II

Activation of components

Using this facility, a number of components can be activated to check their function. The following components can be activated

Glow plug

Activating the glow plug.

Important: This function should be activated for no longer than 10-20 seconds.

Heater fan

Activating the heater fan.

A "buzzing" noise is heard from the heater fan when it is activated.

Fuel pump

Activating the fuel pump.

A "buzzing" noise is heard from the fuel pump when it is activated.

WARNINGThe fuel pipe shall only be filled when replacing the pipe. If you fill with fuel for too long, there is a risk of smoke development or heater damage. However, it is necessary to fill the pipe when replacing the fuel pipe as the control unit only permits 3 heater start attempts. In diesel engines, it shall take a maximum of 8 minutes to fill up with fuel when replacing the pipe. In gasoline engines, it shall take a maximum of 8-10 minutes to fill up with fuel when replacing the pipe.

Water pump

Activating the water pump.

A "buzzing" noise is heard from the water pump when it is activated.

Heater

Activating the heater.

In case of too low battery voltage or if the heater is in a state that prohibits activation, the heater will abort the activation. In order to enable start of the heater itself, battery voltage shall be normal, coolant temperature must be lower than +96 °C, and the heater's post-run/stop sequence must be completed. There must also be enough fuel in the tank.

CAUTIONIf the heater or other components are not activated, try closing down the activation window and then starting the activation again with the symbol for VCT2000.

Component supply voltage

Activating the relay that provides supply voltage to the water pump, fuel pump and heater fan.

Conditions for activating Volvo On Call Plus

Find and make a note of / print the following information

  1. Activation code
  2. SID number (VOCP SID)
  3. MIN number (VOCP MIN)
  4. CSC number
  5. serial numbers of the carphone unit (Phone ESN).

HINT: After replacing the phone module (PHM), it may take up to 12 minutes before the numbers are available.

Activation procedure

Activate the system as described below

  1. Ensure that the car is parked outdoors in an open place
  2. Key position I
  3. Press the ON button if the carphone is switched off (the green LED must be lit on the phone module (PHM))
  4. The text message "On Call Plus disabled" now appears in the driver information module (DIM) display. Acknowledge this by pressing the READ button on the left-hand control stalk
  5. Press (8, 3, 6) on the carphone keypad
  6. Press the right arrow button (») twice. The "On Call prog" programming menu and menu option "Satellite-ESN" now appear in the driver information module (DIM) display
  7. Press the right arrow button (») once. The "Phone ESN" menu is displayed
  8. Press the YES button. The "Phone ESN" serial number will be displayed and can be checked against the number written down earlier
  9. Press the YES button
  10. Press the right arrow button (») once. The "VOCP MIN" menu is displayed
  11. Press the YES button
  12. Erase any existing number by holding the CLR button in until the field is empty
  13. Enter the noted VOCP MIN number
  14. Press the YES button
  15. "Save setting?" will appear in the display. Press the YES button again
  16. Press the right arrow button once. The "VOCP SID" menu is displayed
  17. Press the YES button
  18. Erase any existing number by holding the CLR button in until the field is empty
  19. Enter the noted VOCP SID number
  20. Press the YES button
  21. "Save setting?" will appear in the display. Press the YES button again
  22. Press the right arrow button once. The "CSC Number" menu is displayed
  23. Press the YES button
  24. Enter the CSC number noted earlier, or check that the number displayed is correct. The CSC number will not be filled in the first time that Volvo On Call Plus is activated. During a reactivation, the number will still be stored in the phone module (PHM)
  25. Press the YES button
  26. "Save setting?" will be displayed if the CSC number has been entered. Press the YES button again
  27. Press the NO button to return to the start of the menu
  28. Press the right arrow button seven times. "On Call Plus" is then displayed
  29. Press the YES button
  30. "ActivatnCode" will appear in the display
  31. Press the YES button
  32. Enter the noted activation code
  33. Press the YES button
  34. Volvo On Call Plus now searches for GPS satellites to establish the position. "Finding position..." appears in the display. The car must be parked in an open space. When the system has determined its position, "Press ON CALL to complete" is displayed. Positioning can take between 30 seconds and 25 minutes. For activations after the control module has been replaced, it may take longer for the control module to establish the position. If the system has failed to establish a position within 25 minutes, "On Call Service required" will appear in the display. If this happens, the subscription for Volvo On Call Plus has not been activated. NOTE: If activation fails, the MIN number entered will be erased from the phone module (PHM). If this should happen, repeat the activation from point 3
  35. Keep the "ON CALL" button pressed in for at least two seconds until "On Call Plus" is displayed to make a first call to an operator at the VOCP Service Centre. Tell the Service Centre that this is a subscription activation call and give the name of the dealer and customer. The VOCP Service Centre will confirm the position of the car and the name of the customer and dealer.

Ordering software / keys

Note. To enable adding a key, a key and software must be ordered. Only software must be ordered to erase a key.

Order a key and/or software according to 8633525 .

Note. Keys can only be programmed or erased when the key and/or software are available.

The function must be checked if a new key has been added.

Use VIDA vehicle communication to check that no diagnostic trouble codes have been stored during the work.

Explanation

Frozen values are parameter values that are stored when a diagnostic trouble code is generated. Not all parameters can be read out for all diagnostic trouble codes. The parameter values can only be read if they can provide additional information on the prevailing conditions when the code was generated.

Total mileage, value

Measurement range: 0-1,000,000 km

The value indicates the vehicle's total mileage when the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) was generated.

MECU power supply, value

Measurement range: 0 - 63 V

Normal range: 12.0 - 14.5 V

The value indicates the power supply to the central electronic module (CEM) when the diagnostic trouble code was generated.

Passenger compartment temperature, value

Measurement range: -40 till +215 °C

The value indicates the passenger compartment temperature when the diagnostic trouble code was generated.

Outside temperature, value

Measurement range: -40 till +215 °C

The value indicates the outside temperature when the diagnostic trouble code was generated.

Power supply mode, status

The value indicates the status of the power supply mode when the diagnostic trouble code was generated.

Indicates speed when the diagnostic trouble code was generated.

Measurement range: -780 to +780 °.

Indicates current steering wheel angle.

The normal value when the steering wheel and front wheels point straight ahead is approx. 0°.

Remove

  2. the right-hand side panel in the cargo compartment.

Remove

  1. the floor hatch
  2. the battery. See «Battery, replacing»(ref-407126-S18665471602011070100000)
  3. the cover and soundproofing on the right-hand side.

Remove the base plate. See Base plate and toolbox or the subwoofer (if applicable). See Subwoofer and amplifier for the subwoofer .

Fold the soundproofing out of the way where it covers the four holes.

Remove the four screws.

Use a 13 mm long socket.

Note. Do not drop the nuts. They will be difficult to retrieve.

  1. Disconnect the connector from the antenna amplifier or remove the screw (3) and remove the bracket.

  1. Drill out one rivet from each side (4) where the edge of the fender meets the bumper bracket. The rivets must not be cut off. See.

  1. Slacken off one screw on each side (5), leaving each screw held in place by three threads
  2. Press the screw backwards so that the slide mounting releases from the bumper casing
  3. Press the screw so that the screw head bottoms out.

  1. Pull the bumper backwards while pulling both the sides outwards so that the edges release from the slide mounting. HINT: Two people are required for this task.

Install

In reverse order.

Note. Align the lugs (6) on the bumper in the channels (7) on the slide mounting. Press at the top so that the lugs secure.

Bumper rear, replacing (2004)

Removing the rear bumper

Remove

  1. the floor hatch
  2. the battery. See «Battery, replacing»(ref-406980-S38097941422011070100000)
  3. the cover and soundproofing on the right-hand side
  4. the sub-woofer if applicable.

Fold the soundproofing up where it covers the four holes.

Remove the 4 screws.

HINT: Use butyl tape to secure the nuts in the socket. Otherwise the nuts are easy to lose.

Disconnect the connector from the antenna amplifier or remove the screw (3).

Remove the bracket.

Remove the rivets (4), 1 on each side. See Removing rivet .

Slacken off the screws (5), 1 on each side, leaving each screw held in place by 3 threads.

Press the screws backwards so that the slide mounting releases from the bumper casing.

Press the screw so that the screw head bottoms out.

Pull the bumper backwards while pulling both the sides outwards so that the edges release from the slide mounting.

HINT: This operation is easier with two people.

Installing the rear bumper

Note. For tightening torques, see Tightening torque .

Align the lugs (6) on the bumper in the channels (7) on the slide mounting.

Press at the top so that the lugs secure.

HINT: This operation is easier with two people.

Tighten the screws for the slide mountings on both sides.

Note. Replace the rivets (4) with spring nuts and screws.

Install 1 spring nut on each side.

Install

  1. the screws, 1 on each side. Tighten
  2. the connector for the antenna amplifier or the screw for the bracket
  3. the 4 M8 nuts. Tighten.

HINT: Use butyl tape to secure the nuts in the socket. Otherwise the nuts are easy to lose.

Install

  1. the soundproofing
  2. the sub-woofer if applicable
  3. the cover and soundproofing on the right-hand side
  4. the battery. See «Battery, replacing»(ref-406980-S38097941422011070100000)
  5. the floor hatch.

  1. Ignition off
  2. Expose the integrated relay / fusebox in the cargo compartment
  3. Remove fuses 11D/1 and 11D/2 from the integrated relay / fusebox in the cargo compartment
  4. Release the locking hooks on the top of the integrated relay / fusebox in the cargo compartment
  5. Fold the integrated relay / fusebox in the cargo compartment downwards / inwards. The integrated relay / fusebox in the cargo compartment can now be removed
  6. Slacken off the screw holding the rear electronic module (REM) connector so that it can hang free
  7. Disconnect the rear electronic module (REM) connector. The connector may be stiff.

Connect the adapter between the rear electronic module (REM) and its connector. Connect the breakout box to the adapter. Breakout box wiring 9511503 .

Disconnect the breakout box in reverse order.

Note. Before the rear electronic control module can be checked and measurements taken, the removed fuses must first be installed.

Scheme 2321: Removing the control module
  1. Wait 2 minutes after the ignition has been switched off. The main relay must be voltage free before the control module can be removed from the car. If the engine cooling fan (FC) runs on after the ignition has been switched off, wait until it stops and then a further 2 minutes.
  2. Remove control module box cover and put to one side. NOTE: Do not touch the control module terminal pins with your fingers. Static electricity can damage control module components.
  3. Insert tool «9995722»(ref-403953-S10522720692011061000000) around the control module.
  4. Move the upper section of the tool backwards as far as it will go and pull up the tool.
  5. Carefully pull up the control module.

  1. Check that no pins or sockets are damaged on the connector.
  2. Gently press adapter «9511504»(ref-403953-S20513889072011061000000) down into the grooves inside the control module box. Press to the limit position.
  3. Insert tool «9995722»(ref-403953-S10522720692011061000000) around the adapter.
  4. Move the upper section of the tool forwards as far as it will go. Pull the tool up.

  1. Check the control module and control module connectors to make sure that the male and female terminals are undamaged and secure (cannot be pressed in). Check that the cables to the female terminals are secured to the terminal pins.
  2. Connect adapter «9511504»(ref-403953-S20513889072011061000000) to the control module connector (wiring side). Connect breakout box «9511428»(ref-403953-S35709646712011061000000) to the adapter.
  3. The breakout box is designed to facilitate reading off the control module input and output signals when the control module is connected; and the cable and component resistance when the control module is disconnected. The use of a breakout box reduces the risk of accidental short-circuits and damage to the connector pins.

  1. Ignition off
  2. Disconnect the required connections from the relevant unit.

Check that the male and female terminals on the unit connectors are undamaged and secure (cannot be pressed in). Check that the cables to the female terminals are secured to the terminal pins.

HINT: The GPS antenna is located underneath the parcel shelf. The GPS antenna can be removed through the cargo compartment.

  1. Press the clip (1) up
  2. Insert a hand through one of the holes in the panel. Unhook the lip (2) which is securing the antenna
  3. Remove the antenna through the hole
  4. Disconnect the connector.

Connect adapter 9511463 (terminal A, C) or 9511509 (terminal D) to the connector for the unit (to the wiring). Connect breakout box 9511428 to the adapter.

Carphone module terminals

Connecting the hands-free in the A-post terminals

  1. Ignition off.
  2. Disconnect the automatic transmission control module (TCM)) according to. «Transmission control module (TCM), replacing»(ref-406844-S05588319922011070100000) .
  3. Check that the male and female terminals in the control module and control module connector are intact and secure and that the wiring to the female terminals is properly secured to the pins.
  4. Pay particular attention to the terminals related to the diagnostic trouble code (DTC)/symptom. See «Signal description. Transmission control module (TCM)»(ref-441132-S22526367462011121500000) .
  5. Connect adapter «9511504»(ref-403953-S20513889072011061000000) to the control module connector (wiring side) and connect breakout box «9511428»(ref-403953-S35709646712011061000000) to the adapter.
  6. The breakout box is designed to facilitate reading off the control module input and output signals when the control module is connected; and the cable and component resistance when the control module is disconnected. Scheme 2328: Secondary lock

Release the secondary lock. Use electrician's screwdriver as illustrated.

CAUTIONDisconnect and work with only one cable at a time to minimize the risk of mixing them up.

Use tools 9512636 or 9512639 to remove the primary lock, as illustrated.

At the same time pull the cable carefully backwards.

Primary lock

Check that the cable terminal is undamaged.

Press the cable terminal into the housing.

Check that the cable terminal is properly locked by pulling carefully on the cable.

Secondary lock

Press the secondary lock into place.

Replacing cable terminals

Expose the central electrical unit.

Remove the insulating plate from the central electrical unit by releasing the catch at the same time as the insulating plate is slid out.

HINT: Use a radio screwdriver.

Insert the new cable terminal

Insert the new cable terminal in the receptacle housing from the cable side (in the correct position). A click is heard when it hooks into place.

Carefully pull on the cable to check that it is firmly attached.

Preparations

CAUTIONNew software can only be ordered when the control module is installed in the car. VIDA reads off the new control module identity which is required to order the correct software.

Always check that the control module and control module box connectors do not have bent or damaged terminals or socket / sleeves. This may have been the cause of the fault.

Removing the control module

This method of removal applies to both the driver door module (DDM) and the passenger door module (PDM).

  1. Ignition off
  2. Remove the door panel
  3. Remove the nut and screw holding the door module
  4. Disconnect the connectors
  5. Pry up the rear edge of the door module. Pull the door module backwards and upwards. Remove the door module from its mounting on the door panel
  6. Press up the door module.

Check

Check that the control module's connectors are intact.

Installing the control module

This method of installation applies to both the driver door module (DDM) and the passenger door module (PDM).

  1. Position the door module in the hole on the door panel. Check that the lower mounting for the door module is correctly located in the support on the door panel
  2. Press the door module into place
  3. Connect the connectors
  4. Install the nut and screw
  5. Install the door panel.

  2. Disconnect the catches. Lift the upper panel from the control module.

Install the upper panel.

Position the control module in the hole on the door panel.

Check that the lower mounting for the control module is correctly located in the support on the door panel.

Preparation

WARNINGRISK OF EXPLOSION THE USE OF A FRESH AIR MASK IS RECOMMENDED.

Insert the heavy duty hose 1.3 meters into the fuel filler pipe, measured from the edge of the opening of the filler pipe.

Pump until a lot of air comes out.

Remove

  1. the battery negative terminal. See «Battery, disconnecting»(ref-406866-S10988298012011070100000)
  2. the backrest.

Fold the carpet (1) out of the way.

Remove the insulation panel.

Cover the area (2) around the cover and between the doors with absorbent material.

CAUTIONEnsure that there is no risk of dirt getting into the tank.

Remove the covers (1) over the fuel tank units.

Disconnect the fuel tank unit connectors (2).

Remove the hoses from the fuel tank unit.

Clean the area around the fuel tank unit thoroughly.

Open the fuel tank unit. Grip the level sensor / pump holder. Pinch the float so that it is held in its lowest position.

Insert the heavy duty hose and suck out the remains from the bottom of the right-hand side of the fuel tank.

Connect hose 9995721 to the heavy duty hose. Suck out the remains from the bottom of the fuel tank unit reservoir.

Remove hose 999 5721.

Fuel tank unit

  1. Grip the right fuel tank unit reservoir. Pinch the fuel tank unit reservoir so that the float is held in its lowest position
  2. Lower the reservoir carefully while rotating it backwards around the front-rear shaft on the float
  3. Install a new O-ring. Lubricate the new O-ring using petroleum jelly
  4. Press the fuel tank unit down so that the fuel line connectors are pointing forwards and to the right.
  1. Check that the O-ring is not trapped
  2. Tighten the screw. Tighten to 60 Nm
  3. Install the hoses on the fuel tank unit
  4. Wipe up any fuel spillage
  5. Position the wiring in the cut-out in the rubber ring
  6. Install the cover over the fuel tank unit. Tighten the nuts.

Install

  1. the insulation panel
  2. the carpet
  3. the backrest.
  4. the battery negative terminal. See «Battery, disconnecting»(ref-406866-S10988298012011070100000) .
