Transfer Case
Note. Fluid level can only be checked after vehicle has been stationary for 45 minutes. Engine must not be started during this period.
Raise and support vehicle. See DISABLING/ENABLING ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL. Remove oil inspection plug (A). see scheme 6 Oil level is correct if oil reached lower edge of inspection window. If not, top off as necessary. Fill with oil to lower edge of inspection plug (A), using ATF filling device for filling transmission. Place topping off equipment in a raised position. Install oil inspection plug with NEW sealing ring. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m).

Front Axle Final Drive
SAF PD (Burmah SAF AG4), or equivalent. For more information, see technical service bulletin APPROVED OILS - FINAL DRIVES AND TRANSFER CASES .
Petro Canada Auto Track II (blue color oil) is the factory fill oil. ESSO ATF LT 71141 is for topping off/adjusting and is Red in color. For more information, see technical service bulletin APPROVED OILS - FINAL DRIVES AND TRANSFER CASES .
Rear Axle Final Drive

Raise and support vehicle. See DISABLING/ENABLING ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL. Place oil collection pan under transfer case. Remove drain plug (B). see scheme 6 Vehicle must be horizontal to fill transfer case. Fill with oil to lower edge of inspection plug (A), using ATF filling device for filling transmission. Place topping off equipment in a raised position. Install oil inspection plug with NEW sealing ring. Tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m). Check oil level. See CHECKING FLUID LEVEL.
DISABLING/ENABLING ELECTRONIC LEVEL CONTROL
| CAUTION | Before jacking up vehicles equipped with air suspension, ensure electronic level control is disabled (switched off). |
Adjusting Car To Normal Level (Air Suspension)
- If air suspension accumulators of the air suspension are filled, only the ignition has to be switched on. If air pressure in the accumulators is too low, the compressor comes on and loads the battery. In this case, the battery must be charged, or the engine must be started.
- Stop the vehicle and apply the brake.
- Close vehicle doors.
- Tap the right-hand rocker switch in the center console in the appropriate direction until the vehicle has reached the low level. Then set the vehicle to the normal level.
- The middle indicator light next to the rocker switch is on permanently. If a further indicator light should come on, a different level is adjusted.
Note. To avoid controlling the air suspension level during a wheel alignment check/adjustment, switch the level control off during the alignment. Switch it on again after work is completed.
Switching Off Electronic Level Control (Air Suspension)
- BEFORE switching off air suspension, adjust car to normal level. See «Adjusting Car To Normal Level (Air Suspension)»(ref-170237-S00702932932005011200000) .
- Switch on ignition, with engine off.
- Push rocker switch forwards for 5-10 seconds. The message "Car May Now Be Lifted" appears in the variable control display of the instrument panel.
Switching On Electronic Level Control (Air Suspension)
- Switch on ignition.
- Push rocker switch forwards for 5-10 seconds.
- Start the engine and drive the vehicle. Level control comes on automatically.

- Using a second technician, with brake applied, remove cardan shaft bolts (arrow) to front of transfer box. (Scheme 58) Remove transmission cross members, by supporting transmission with transmission jack, and secure with fixing strap.
- Remove four bolts from exhaust system on cross member (center arrows). (Scheme 59)
- Remove bolts (A) from support to body. (Scheme 60) Remove two transmission cross member bolts (B) on transfer box holder.
- Remove shield on transmission, by removing three bolts (arrows). (Scheme 61) Pull out cable on multi-function switch.
- Remove cap nut, cap, nut with tab washer, and rubber washer on multi-funtion switch. (Scheme 62)
- Remove multi-function switch fastening bolts (arrows). (Scheme 63) Position special adjustment tool (T10173) on shaft. (Scheme 64) Fix to shaft with screw (arrow).
- Install multi-function switch. Tighten bolts to 44 INCH Lbs. (5 N.m). Install cap nut, cap, nut with tab washer and rubber washer on multi-function switch. Tighten nut with tab washer to 62 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Tighten cap nut to 132 INCH lbs. (15 N.m). Connect compact connector to multi-function switch.
- Install shield on transmission. When installing shield, ensure that all fastening parts exist, and are inserted correctly. (Scheme 65) Install three fastening bolts.
- Install transmission cross member, by installing two bolts (B) on transfer box holder. (Scheme 60) Install bolts (A). Install four bolts securing exhaust system to cross member. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-170237-S40909033232005010700000).
- Using a second technician, with brake applied, install bolts securing cardan shaft to transfer box. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-170237-S40909033232005010700000). Install engine guard. Check functions of multi-function switch. Ensure vehicle starts, and selector lever works in all positions.

- Move selector lever to position "P". Remove selector knob. See «SELECTOR KNOB»(ref-170237-S27199516132005010700000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Remove center console cover, by removing two screws (arrows). (Scheme 66) Disconnect plug connection (inset), tip cover up and back, then remove cover.
- Remove selector frame bolts (arrows). (Scheme 67) Undo selector lever cable screw connection on selector support (right arrow), using special inserts (model AB 170) tool. (Scheme 68)
- Remove engine guard. see scheme 2 Move shift lever on transmission to position "P" (highest position).
- Using special tool, with special inserts (model AB 170), and accessory for torque wrench, open ring wrench insert a/f 13 with adapter 98-1, screw in selector lever cable screw connections on selector support (right arrow). (Scheme 68) Tighten to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
- Install selector frame. Tighten bolts to 53 INCH lbs. (6 N.m). Connect cable connection on underside (inset) of center console cover. (Scheme 66) Install center console cover screws.
- Install selector lever knob. Check functions of selector lever cable. Ensure vehicle starts, and selector lever works in all positions. Install engine guard.

- Remove lock mount. See «LOCK MOUNT»(ref-170237-S24443312162005011000000).
- Place oil collection pan under transmission. Remove ATF line nut on thermostat (arrow). (Scheme 69)
- Lock line ends. Remove retainer clip (arrow) on ATF cooler. (Scheme 70) Remove ATF cooler.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Check ATF level. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(ref-170237-S15040370352005010700000) under LUBRICATION. Top off as necessary. Tighten ATF line to thermostat to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-170237-S40909033232005010700000).

- Using bridge support, support engine on body. (Scheme 78) Remove engine guard. see scheme 2
- Remove front suspension subframe bolts and remove subframe. (Scheme 79) DO NOT use mounting bolts again.
- Remove two fastening bolts (arrows) to left and right hydraulic mounts. (Scheme 80) Remove two fastening bolts from engine carrier to body. Remove engine carrier.
- To install, first position fastening bolts (M10 x 45) on hydraulic mounts. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-170237-S40909033232005010700000).
- Install fastening bolts on engine carrier. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-170237-S40909033232005010700000). Install front suspension subframe using NEW bolts. Install engine guard.
