Checking engine control module (ECM) power supply and ground terminal

Checking power supply

  1. Check fuse 11 B/18. If the fuse is blown check the circuit after the fuse for a short-circuit to ground according to «Short-circuit to ground, permanent faults»(ref-461653-S02055078412012040200000)
  2. Check fuse 11/B14. If the fuse is blown check the circuit after the fuse for a short-circuit to ground according to «Short-circuit to ground, permanent faults»(ref-461653-S02055078412012040200000) .
  3. Check power supply to #A70. Voltage should be approximately battery voltage.
  4. Check power supply to #B11. Voltage should be approximately battery voltage.

Checking ground terminal

  1. Check ground lead between engine control module (ECM) #A53, #A54, #A63 and right side member ground terminal 31/96 for an open-circuit according to «Open-circuit, permanent faults»(ref-461653-S18881194162012040200000)
  2. Check engine control module (ECM) ground terminal for contact resistance and oxidation according to «Contact resistance and oxidation»(ref-461653-S26956869552012040200000)

  2. Power supply to the engine control module (ECM) #A70 is from fuse 11 B/18 via the system relay.

Checking the power supply

  1. Check the fuse for power supply to the electronic throttle unit. If the fuse is blown, check the circuit after the fuse. Check for a short-circuit to ground
  2. Check power supply to throttle unit #6. Voltage should be approximately battery voltage.

Checking the ground terminal

  1. Check the ground lead between throttle unit terminal #5 and engine ground terminal ETM 31/91. Check for an open-circuit
  2. Check the ground terminal for the throttle unit. Check for contact resistance and oxidation.

Checking the power supply

  1. Check the fuse for power supply to engine control module (ECM) terminal #A17 (#A17). If the fuse is blown, check the circuit for a short-circuit to ground
  2. Check the fuse for power supply to engine control module (ECM) terminal #B11 (#B21). If the fuse is blown, check the circuit for a short-circuit to ground
  3. Check the power supply to engine control module (ECM) terminal #A17 (#A17). The voltage must be approximately battery voltage when the ignition is on. If the voltage is incorrect, check the cable between ignition switch terminal 30 and system relay terminal #3 and the cable between system relay terminal #5 and engine control module (ECM) terminal #A17 (#A17). Check for an open-circuit
  4. Check the power supply to engine control module (ECM) terminal #B11 (#B21). The voltage must be approximately battery voltage when the ignition is on. If the voltage is incorrect, check the cable between ignition switch terminal 30 and engine control module (ECM) terminal #B11 (#B21). Check for an open-circuit.

Checking ground terminal

  1. Check the ground leads between engine control module (ECM) terminals #A53 (#A53), #A54 (#A54), #A63 (#B3) and the common ground terminal in the body for the wiring. Check for an open-circuit
  2. Check the ground terminal in the body for the engine control module (ECM). Check for contact resistance and oxidation.

Scheme 12: Removing the control module
  1. Wait 2 minutes after the ignition has been switched off. The main relay must be voltage free before the control module is removed from the car. If the engine cooling fan (FC) runs on after the ignition has been switched off, wait until it stops and then wait for a further 2 minutes
  2. Remove the cover over the control module box. Put the cover to one side. NOTE: Do not touch the control module terminal pins with your fingers. Static electricity may damage components in the control module.
  3. Insert tool «9995722»(ref-403953-S10522720692011061000000) around the control module
  4. Move the upper section of the tool backwards as far as it will go. Pull up the tool
  5. Carefully pull up the control module.

  1. Check that no pins or sockets are damaged on the connector
  2. Gently press adapter «9511504»(ref-403953-S20513889072011061000000) down into the grooves inside the control module box. Press to the limit position.
  3. Insert tool «9995722»(ref-403953-S10522720692011061000000) around the adapter
  4. Move the upper section of the tool forwards as far as it will go. Pull the tool up.

  1. Check the control module and control module connectors to ensure that the male and female terminals are undamaged and secure (cannot be pressed in). Check that the cables to the female terminals are secured to the terminal pins
  2. Connect adapter «9511504»(ref-403953-S20513889072011061000000) to the control module connector (wiring side). Connect breakout box «9511428»(ref-403953-S35709646712011061000000) to the adapter via wiring «9511499»(ref-403953-S17823813432011061000000)
  3. The breakout box is designed to facilitate reading off the control module input and output signals when the control module is connected; and the cable and component resistance when the control module is disconnected. The use of a breakout box reduces the risk of accidental short-circuits and damage to the connector pins.

Information

Background

OBD II is a diagnostics system designed to meet statutory requirements. A standardized instrument for fault-tracing can be plugged in to the data link connector (DLC) (OBD II socket) to read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and system parameters. OBD II contains only emissions related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and parameters. It cannot provide the comprehensive range of information available from the Volvo On-board diagnostics system.

Volvo has its own diagnostic trouble code (DTC) designations that adhere to the in-house Volvo On-board Diagnostics protocol (called DII from model year 1999).

Table explanations

The table below is a conversion table between standardized diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) (SAE/ISO) and the equivalent Volvo diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) (DII).

SAE/ISO DTC: Standardized diagnostic trouble code as per SAE J2012/ISO 15031-6. The DTC can be read out from the vehicle using a standardized diagnostics system for emission-related faults certified as per OBD II. The readout is taken with a generic scan tool, a fault tracing instrument standardized as per SAE J1978/ISO 15031-4.

Volvo DII DTC: Volvo-specific diagnostic trouble code as per Volvo On Board Diagnostics protocol. Can be read out from cars from model year 1999 using VIDA.

DTC designation: Volvo DTC designation. Used in VIDA.

Fault type: Volvo's method of specifying the fault. Used in VIDA.

Note. An SAE/ISO diagnostic trouble code can correspond to several DII diagnostic trouble codes. All of these must therefore by rectified in order for the corresponding SAE/ISO diagnostic trouble code to disappear. Several SAE/ISO diagnostic trouble codes may also refer to the same DII diagnostic trouble code. There are DII diagnostic trouble codes for non emission-related malfunctions that do not correspond to any SAE/ISO diagnostic trouble code.
