Brake Control System - Design and Function: Overview Volvo S60 I

Abbreviations

Note. All functions below are not available in all vehicles or vehicle models. The brake system can consist of only ABS or ABS including TRACS, STC, or DSTC.

FunctionDescription
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)Anti-lock braking. Prevents wheels from locking when braking.
AYC (Active Yaw Control)Stability control. Prevents oversteering and understeering with active braking.
BA (Brake Assistance)Brake assistance. Boosts braking force in case of sudden heavy braking. Brake assistance is electronic for vehicles with DSTC, mechanical for others.
EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution)Electronic distribution of braking force. Distributes braking force between front and rear brakes.
SC (Stability Control)Stability control. Reduces engine torque to obtain increased lateral stability when the wheels spin at speeds from 0 km/h to top speed.
TC (Traction Control)Traction control. Brakes spinning wheel from 0 km/h - top speed.
RSC (Roll over Stability Control)Monitors the car's inclination angle and acts on the brakes if the car is at risk of rolling over.
SystemDescription
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)Anti-lock braking. Includes the functions ABS and EBD.
DSTC (Dynamic STC)Dynamic stability and traction control. Includes the functions ABS, EBD, SC, TC and AYC.
STC (Stability and Traction Control)Traction and stability control. Includes the functions ABS, EBD, SC and TC.
TRACS (Traction Control System)Traction control system for four-wheel drive cars. Includes the functions ABS, EBD and TC.
Other abbreviationsDescription
BCM (Brake Control Module)Name of control module for brake system (BCM). Includes functions such as ABS, AYC, EBA, EBD, SC, TC and RSC.
CAN (Controller Area Network)Standardized protocol for serial communication between control modules.
