PROCEDURE
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Turn the A/C switch on. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake side). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1). Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Active Test Tester Display Control the VVT Linear (Bank1) Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the Techstream. Standard Condition Techstream Operation Specified Condition 0% Normal engine speed 100% Engine idles roughly or stalls HINT: If the result is not as specified, allow the engine to cool (engine coolant temperature of 50°C (122°F) or less) and perform the Active Test again. DTCs related to the VVT system may be stored due to Active Test operation, but this does not indicate a malfunction. If the operation is not as specified, check the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly, wire harness and ECM. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust side). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1). Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Active Test Tester Display Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank1) Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the Techstream. Standard Condition Techstream Operation Specified Condition 0% Normal engine speed 100% Engine idles roughly or stalls HINT: If the result is not as specified, allow the engine to cool (engine coolant temperature of 50°C (122°F) or less) and perform the Active Test again. Remove the bolt and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly. NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (connecting surface with the cylinder head cover sub-assembly). If the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly has been struck or dropped, replace it. Remove the O-ring from the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. *1 O-ring

Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Check the operation. Connect a battery positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and negative (-) lead to terminal 2, and check the movement of the spool valve. *a Component without harness connected (Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve Assembly) *b When Applied *c When Cut Off *d Spool Valve OK Condition Specified Condition Battery voltage is applied Valve moves in left arrow direction shown in illustration Battery voltage is cut off Valve moves in right arrow direction shown in illustration NOTE: Accumulation of foreign matter can cause minor pressure leaks. Minor pressure leaks in the intake side oil control valve will cause the intake camshaft to advance. Minor pressure leaks in the exhaust side oil control valve will cause the exhaust camshaft to retard. The inappropriate camshaft timing that results from these leaks will cause a DTC to be stored. If the result is not as specified, replace the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.
- INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly to the cylinder head cover sub-assembly with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly has been struck or dropped, replace it. Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (connecting surface with the cylinder head cover sub-assembly). Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Connect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.
- INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it to the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and wire harness bracket to the cylinder head cover sub-assembly with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly has been struck or dropped, replace it. Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (connecting surface with the cylinder head cover sub-assembly). Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Connect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.

- INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle control motor operating sound. Turn the ignition switch to ON. When depressing the accelerator pedal, check the operating sound of the throttle control motor. Make sure that no friction noise is emitted from the throttle control motor. If any friction noise exists, replace the throttle body assembly. Check the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Throttle Sensor Position. Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Data List Tester Display Throttle Sensor Position Depress the accelerator pedal. When the throttle valve is fully open, check that the Throttle Sensor Position value is within specification. Standard Throttle Valve Opening Percentage Tester Display Specified Condition Throttle Sensor Position 60% or higher NOTE: When checking the throttle valve opening percentage, the shift lever should be in N. Fully depress the accelerator pedal. If the percentage is less than 60%, check the throttle body assembly, wire harness and ECM.

- REMOVE NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 13»(ref-635582-S27583653032014070300000)
- REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP WITH AIR CLEANER HOSE Disconnect the mass air flow meter sub-assembly connector and disengage the 2 wire harness clamps. Disengage the 2 clamps. Slide the clip and disconnect the No. 2 ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Loosen the hose clamp and remove the air cleaner cap with air cleaner hose.
- REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the throttle body assembly connector. *1 No. 1 Water By-pass Hose *2 No. 2 Water By-pass Hose Slide the 2 clips and disconnect the No. 1 water by-pass hose and No. 2 water by-pass hose from the throttle body assembly. w/ Stud Bolt: Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and throttle body assembly from the intake manifold. NOTE: If the throttle body assembly has been struck or dropped, replace it. w/o Stud Bolt: Remove the 4 bolts and throttle body assembly from the intake manifold. NOTE: If the throttle body assembly has been struck or dropped, replace it.
- REMOVE THROTTLE BODY GASKET Remove the throttle body gasket from the intake manifold.
- INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. *a Component without harness connected (Throttle Body Assembly) Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle body assembly.
- INSTALL THROTTLE BODY GASKET Install a new throttle body gasket onto the intake manifold with the protrusion of the throttle body gasket oriented as shown in the illustration. *a Protrusion
- INSTALL THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY w/ Stud Bolt: Install the throttle body assembly to the intake manifold with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If the throttle body assembly has been struck or dropped, replace it. w/o Stud Bolt: Install the throttle body assembly to the intake manifold with the 4 bolts. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If the throttle body assembly has been struck or dropped, replace it. Connect the No. 1 water by-pass hose and No. 2 water by-pass hose to the throttle body assembly and slide the 2 clips to secure them. Connect the throttle body assembly connector.
- INSTALL AIR CLEANER CAP WITH AIR CLEANER HOSE Connect the air cleaner cap with air cleaner hose to the throttle body assembly. Engage the 2 clamps to install the air cleaner cap with air cleaner hose. Tighten the hose clamp. Torque: 4.0 N*m (41 kgf*cm, 35 in.*lbf) Connect the No. 2 ventilation hose to the cylinder head cover sub-assembly and slide the clip to secure it. Connect the mass air flow meter sub-assembly connector and engage the 2 wire harness clamps.
- INSTALL NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 90»(ref-635582-S10334097242014070300000) & «PROCEDURE - Step 90»(ref-635582-S34345733592014070300000)
- ADD ENGINE COOLANT Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 2»(ref-635586-S35774719622014070300000)
- INSPECT FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAK Refer to «PROCEDURE - Step 1»(ref-635628-S42296152022014070300000)
- PERFORM INITIALIZATION NOTE: Be sure to perform this procedure after removing and reinstalling the throttle body assembly or any throttle body assembly components. Perform the following procedure after replacing the throttle body assembly or any throttle body assembly components. The following procedure should also be performed if the throttle body assembly is cleaned. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR [08/2013 - ]»(ref-635447-S23850175802014070300000) Turn the ignition switch to ON without operating the accelerator pedal. Perform the "Inspection After Repair". Refer to «INITIALIZATION [08/2013 - ]»(ref-635447-S25564571732014070300000) Start the engine and check that the MIL is not illuminated. After the engine is warmed up, check that the idle speed is within the specified range with the A/C switch off. Standard Idle Speed 600 to 700 RPM NOTE: Be sure to perform this step with all accessories off. Make sure that the shift lever is in P or N (for Automatic Transaxle and CVT). Make sure that the shift lever is in neutral (for Manual Transaxle). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Throttle Sensor Position. Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Data List Tester Display Throttle Sensor Position Fully depress the accelerator pedal and check that the value is 60% or higher. Perform a road test and confirm that there are no abnormalities.

- SEPARATE INLET NO. 1 AIR CLEANER Remove the bolt and separate the inlet No. 1 air cleaner from the air cleaner case sub-assembly.
- REMOVE ECM Raise the 2 levers while pushing the locks on the levers, and disconnect the 2 ECM connectors. NOTE: After disconnecting the ECM connectors, make sure that dirt, water or other foreign matter does not contact the connecting parts of the ECM connectors. Disengage the wire harness clamp. Remove the 3 bolts. Disengage the clamp and remove the ECM. NOTE: If the ECM has been struck or dropped, replace it.
- REMOVE ECM BRACKET Remove the 2 screws and ECM bracket from the ECM.
- REMOVE NO. 2 ECM BRACKET Remove the 2 screws and No. 2 ECM bracket from the ECM.

- INSTALL NO. 2 ECM BRACKET Install the No. 2 ECM bracket to the ECM with the 2 screws. Torque: 3.0 N*m (31 kgf*cm, 27 in.*lbf)
- INSTALL ECM BRACKET Install the ECM bracket to the ECM with the 2 screws. Torque: 3.0 N*m (31 kgf*cm, 27 in.*lbf)
- INSTALL ECM Engage the clamp and install the ECM with the 3 bolts. Torque: 12.5 N*m (127 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If the ECM has been struck or dropped, replace it. Connect the 2 ECM connectors and lower the 2 levers. NOTE: When connecting the ECM connectors, make sure that dirt, water or other foreign matter does not contact the connecting parts of the ECM connectors. Be sure to securely connect the ECM connectors. Engage the wire harness clamp.
- INSTALL INLET NO. 1 AIR CLEANER Install the inlet No. 1 air cleaner to the air cleaner case sub-assembly with the bolt. Torque: 7.0 N*m (71 kgf*cm, 62 in.*lbf)

Note. Perform the mass air flow meter sub-assembly inspection according to the following procedure. Only replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly when the mass air flow meter sub-assembly value in the Data List (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range or there is foreign matter on the mass air flow meter sub-assembly platinum hot wire (heater).
- INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY HINT: Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing the mass air flow meter sub-assembly. Refer to «INITIALIZATION [08/2013 - ]»(ref-635447-S25564571732014070300000) Read the value using the Techstream (MAF). NOTE: Perform the inspection with the vehicle indoors and on a level surface. Perform the inspection of the mass air flow meter sub-assembly while it is installed to the air cleaner cap sub-assembly (installed to the vehicle). During the test, do not use an exhaust air duct on the exhaust pipe. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not start the engine). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / MAF. Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Data List Tester Display MAF Wait for 30 seconds, and read the value on the Techstream. Standard Condition Tester Display Condition Standard Condition MAF Engine not running 30 seconds after ignition switch turned to ON 0.31 gm/sec or less If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If the camshaft position sensor has been struck or dropped, replace it. Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or does not move out of place during installation. Connect the camshaft position sensor connector. for Exhaust Side: Clean and degrease the threads of the bolt for the camshaft position sensor. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the camshaft position sensor. *a O-ring Install the camshaft position sensor to the cylinder head cover sub-assembly with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If the camshaft position sensor has been struck or dropped, replace it. Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or does not move out of place during installation. Connect the camshaft position sensor connector.

- REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector. Remove the bolt and crankshaft position sensor from the cylinder block sub-assembly. NOTE: If the crankshaft position sensor has been struck or dropped, replace it.
- INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. *a Component without harness connected (Crankshaft Position Sensor) Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 Cold 1630 to 2740 ohms Hot 2065 to 3225 ohms HINT: In the table above, the terms "Cold" and "Hot" mean the temperature of the coils themselves. "Cold" is from -10 to 50°C (14 to 122 °F) and "Hot" is from 50 to 100°C (122 to 212°F). If the result is not as specified, replace the crankshaft position sensor.
- INSTALL CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Clean and degrease the threads of the bolt for the crankshaft position sensor. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the crankshaft position sensor. *a O-ring Install the crankshaft position sensor to the cylinder block sub-assembly with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If the crankshaft position sensor has been struck or dropped, replace it. Make sure that the O-ring is not cracked or does not move out of place during installation. Connect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

- INSTALL SPARK PLUG HINT: Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing a spark plug. Refer to «INITIALIZATION [08/2013 - ]»(ref-635447-S25564571732014070300000) Using a 14 mm spark plug wrench, install the 4 spark plugs to the cylinder head sub-assembly. Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) NOTE: If a spark plug has been struck or dropped, replace it. HINT: Install the same parts to their original positions.
- INSTALL IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY HINT: Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing an ignition coil assembly.
