Starter - Removal, Replacement & Installation (Convertible): Other Volvo C70 I

Preparations

  1. Remove the steering column covers according to «Replacing steering column cover»(ref-404022-S18100318522011061000000) NOTE: Do not remove the upper cover from the apron molding.

Scheme 7: Start switch
  1. Remove the screws and bracket
  2. Release the start switch
  3. Disconnect the connector.
  1. Install the connector on the start switch
  2. Position the start switch on the steering wheel lock
  3. Install the screws and bracket
  4. Check the function
  5. Install the steering column covers according to «Replacing steering column cover»(ref-404022-S18100318522011061000000) .

Note. A new start switch and bracket has been introduced into production. Start switch kit 9452632 should be used for replacements from the following chassis numbers inclusive: C70 Convertible 1705

  1. Remove the steering column covers according to «Replacing steering column cover»(ref-404022-S18100318522011061000000) .

Start switch

  1. Remove the screws and bracket
  2. Release the start switch
  3. Disconnect the connector.
  1. Install the connector on the start switch
  2. Position the start switch on the steering wheel lock
  3. Install the screws and bracket
  4. Check the function
  5. Install the steering column covers according to «Replacing steering column cover»(ref-404022-S18100318522011061000000) .

Starter motor

  1. Disconnect the battery negative lead. See «Battery, replacing»(ref-438302-S21935689422011120100000) .
CAUTIONWhen removing/installing the battery leads, see Battery, disconnecting .
  1. Remove the air cleaner housing.
  2. Remove the solenoid from the air cleaner housing.
  3. Remove the air cleaner (ACL) housing

  1. Remove the front screw for the starter motor bracket. Starter motor bracket withdrawn during model year 2002.
  2. Disconnect the connector and cable for the solenoid.
  3. Remove the screws (2 pcs) that hold the starter motor to the transmission.
  4. Remove the starter motor.

  1. Slacken off the nut. Remove the cable
  2. Remove the 3 screws.
  3. Lift the solenoid. Unhook the solenoid and the spring and hook.

Starter motor and solenoid

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

CAUTIONWhen removing/installing the battery leads, see Battery, disconnecting .
  1. Screw for the starter motor bracket: 6 NM . Starter motor bracket withdrawn during model year 2002.
  2. Screws for the starter motor/transmission: 40 NM

Battery, replacing

Note. During model year 2004 a new battery mounting was introduced whereby the complete battery cover (large cover) was replaced with a battery cover which only covers the battery's positive terminal (small cover). Select replacement method as follows

  2. «Battery, replacement (small cover)»(ref-438302-S34272335252011120100000)
