UPPER CRANKSHAFT BEARING IDENTIFICATION

From the factory, the upper bearing shells are allocated to the cylinder block with the correct thickness. Colored dots are used to identify the bearing thicknesses.

The letters marked on the lower sealing surface of the cylinder block identify which bearing thickness must be installed in which location.

S=Black
R=Red
G=Yellow
B=Blue
W=White

Note. Arrow points in the direction of travel. If the colored dots can no longer be seen, use the blue bearing shell. The lower crankshaft bearing shells are always shipped as a replacement part with a "yellow" dot.

CRANKSHAFT OVERVIEW

Note. Before removing the crankshaft, prepare for appropriate storage, so that the sensor wheel does not make contact or become damaged. The engine is to be secured to the engine and transmission holder VAS 6095 when performing assembly work.

Note. On vehicles with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG R), a needle bearing must be installed in the rear of the crankshaft.

Scheme 49: CRANKSHAFT OVERVIEW
  1. Bolt 65 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn. Always replace. Fully threaded. Only tighten to 65 Nm to measure the radial play. Do not tighten to the additional torque.
  2. Bearing Cap Bearing cap 1: Belt pulley side. Retaining tabs on the bearing shells and cylinder block/bearing caps must align with one another.
  3. Screw 10 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn. Always replace.
  4. Sensor Wheel For the engine speed sensor. Replace the sensor wheel every time the screws are loosened. Only possible to install in one position - Bores are offset. Removing and installing, refer to «SENSOR WHEEL»(ref-475538-S01026531632012052300000) .
  5. Crankshaft Axial play new: 0.07 to 0.23 mm wear limit: 0.30 mm. Check radial clearance using Plastigage 0.017 to 0.037 mm wear limit: 0.07 mm. Do not rotate the crankshaft when measuring the radial play. Crankshaft dimensions, refer to «CRANKSHAFT DIMENSIONS»(ref-475538-S08335977942012052300000) . Removing and installing the needle bearing. Refer to «CRANKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARINGS»(ref-475538-S38969618532012052300000) .
  6. Thrust Washers For bearing 3.
  7. Bearing Shell, for the Cylinder Block With a lubricating groove. Identification for replacement part ordering, refer to «UPPER CRANKSHAFT BEARING IDENTIFICATION»(ref-475538-S42817827772012052300000) . Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark them).
  8. Sprocket For the oil pump drive.
  9. Bearing Shell, for the Bearing Cap Without a lubricating groove. Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark them).

Scheme 50

Scheme 50: PISTONS AND CONNECTING ROD OVERVIEW
  1. Bolt 30 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn. Always replace. Lubricate the threads and contact surface. Tighten to 30 Nm to measure the radial play, do not tighten the additional torque.
  2. Bolt with Pressure Relief Valve 27 Nm Opening pressure 1.3 to 1.6 bar pressure.
  3. Oil Spray Jet For the piston cooling.
  4. Connecting Rod Bearing Cap Pay attention to the installed position Due to the separation procedure (cracking) of the connecting rod, the cap only fits in one position and only to the corresponding connecting rod. -B- is the affiliation to the cylinder mark. Installed position: Marks -A- point to the belt pulley side.
  5. Bearing Shell Note the installed position, refer to «BEARING SHELL, INSTALLED POSITION»(ref-475538-S19836686262012052300000). Do not interchange used bearing shells. Axial play new: 0.10 to 0.35 mm wear limit: 0.4 mm. Measure radial clearance using Plastigage: New: 0.02 to 0.06 mm wear limit: 0.09 mm. Do not rotate the crankshaft when checking the radial clearance.
  6. Connecting Rod With a cracked bearing cap. Only replace as a set. -B- is the affiliation to the cylinder mark. Installed position: Marks -A- point to the belt pulley side.

  8. Piston Pin If difficult to move, heat the piston to 60°C (140°F). Remove and install using a pilot drift VW 222 A.
  9. Piston Checking see scheme 17 Mark the installed position and cylinder allocation. Arrow on the piston face points toward the belt pulley side. Install with piston ring compressor. Cylinder bore, checking. see scheme 18 For the correct piston and cylinder dimensions, refer to «PISTON AND CYLINDER DIMENSIONS»(ref-475538-S04095694112012052300000).
  10. Piston Rings Offset gaps by 120°. Use piston ring pliers for removing and installing. Marks face toward the piston crown. Checking ring gap see scheme 15 Checking piston ring groove clearance see scheme 16
