Automatic Transmission (Diagnostics), 2.5L: Diagnosis Saab 9-2X I

CHECK PRE-INSPECTION

Ask the customer when and how trouble occurred using interview checklist.

Before performing the diagnosis, inspect following items which might influence the AT problems.

  1. General inspection
  2. Oil leak
  3. Stall speed test
  4. Line pressure test
  5. Transfer clutch pressure test
  6. Time lag test
  7. Road test
  8. Inhibitor switch

Is the item that might influence AT problem normal?

YES. Go to CHECK AT OIL TEMP WARNING LIGHT .

NO

Repair or replace each item.

CHECK INDICATION OF DTC

Calling up the DTC.

Note. If the communication function of Vehicle Diagnostic Interface cannot be executed normally, check the communication circuit.

Is the DTC displayed?

YES. Go to PERFORM THE DIAGNOSIS .

Note. Record all DTC.

NO. Go to PERFORM THE GENERAL DIAGNOSTICS .

PERFORM THE GENERAL DIAGNOSTICS

Inspect using " DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE WITHOUT DTC ".

Inspect using " SYMPTOM RELATED DIAGNOSTIC ".

Perform the clear memory mode.

Perform the inspection mode.

Calling up the DTC.

Is the DTC displayed?

YES. Go to PERFORM THE DIAGNOSIS .

NO

Complete the diagnosis.

PERFORM THE DIAGNOSIS

Inspect using DIAGNOSTICS CHART WITH DTC.

" DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE WITH DTC ".

Note. For DTC table, refer to " LIST OF DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) ".

Repair the trouble cause.

Perform the clear memory mode.

Perform the inspection mode.

Calling up the DTC.

Is the DTC displayed?

YES

Inspect using " DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE WITH DTC ".

NO

Complete the diagnosis.

READ DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE

Prepare the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface kit.

Connect the diagnosis cable to Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Data link connector located in the lower portion of instrument panel (on driver's side).

Scheme 561: READ DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE

Connect the diagnosis cable to data link connector.

Note. Do not connect scan tools except for Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

Turn the ignition switch to ON (engine OFF), and start the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

On the << Main Menu >> display screen, select the {Each System Check}.

On the << System Selection Menu >> display screen, select the {Transmission Control System}.

Select the {OK} after the information of transmission type is displayed.

On the << Transmission Diagnosis >> display screen, select the {Diagnostic Code(s) Display}.

Note. For detailed operation procedure, refer to the VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE OPERATION MANUAL. For details concerning the DTC, refer to the DTC LIST .

WITH Vehicle Diagnostic Interface

Refer to VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE for information about how to clear DTC.

INSPECTION

DIAGNOSIS

The AT OIL TEMP warning light circuit is open or shorted.

TROUBLE SYMPTOM

  1. When the ignition switch is turned to ON (engine OFF), AT OIL TEMP warning light does not illuminate normally.

CHECK VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT

Measure the voltage between data link connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(B40) No. 1 (+) - Chassis ground (- )

Is the voltage more than 10 V?

YES. Go to CHECK VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE GROUND CIRCUIT .

NO

Repair the harness and connector between battery and data link connector, and poor contact in coupling connector.

CHECK VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE GROUND CIRCUIT

Measure the resistance of harness between data link connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(B40) No. 12 - Chassis ground

(B40) No. 13 - Chassis ground

Is the resistance less than 1 O?

YES. Go to CHECK COMMUNICATION OF VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE .

NO

Repair the open circuit in harness between data link connector and ground terminal, and poor contact in coupling connector.

CHECK COMMUNICATION OF VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

Using the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface, check whether communication to transmission systems can be executed normally.

Are the name of system displayed on Vehicle Diagnostic Interface?

YES. Go to CHECK HARNESS/CONNECTOR BETWEEN TCM AND DATA LINK CONNECTOR .

NO. Go to CHECK COMMUNICATION OF VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE .

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

Disconnect the TCM connector.

Check whether communication to engine systems can be executed normally.

Are the name of system displayed on Vehicle Diagnostic Interface?

YES. Go to CHECK HARNESS CONNECTOR BETWEEN EACH CONTROL MODULE AND DATA LINK CONNECTOR .

NO. Go to CHECK COMMUNICATION OF VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE .

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

Connect the TCM connector.

Disconnect the ECM connector.

Check whether communication to transmission systems can be executed normally.

Are the name of system displayed on Vehicle Diagnostic Interface?

YES

Inspect the ECM.

NO. Go to CHECK HARNESS CONNECTOR BETWEEN EACH CONTROL MODULE AND DATA LINK CONNECTOR .

INSPECTION OF TRANSMISSION HARNESS CONNECTOR

Is the transmission harness connector inserted into bulkhead harness connector?

YES. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT IN CONNECTORS .

NO

Connect the bulkhead harness connector to transmission harness connector.

DTC LIST

DIAGNOSIS

  1. There is malfunction in inhibitor switch.
  2. The input signal circuit of inhibitor switch is open or shorted.

TROUBLE SYMPTOM

  1. Shift characteristics are erroneous.
  2. Engine brake is not effected when select lever is in "3" range.
  3. Engine brake is not effected when select lever is in "2" range.
  4. Engine brake is not effected when select lever is in "1" range.

CHECK INPUT SIGNAL FOR TCM USING VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE

Connect the connector to transmission.

Turn the ignition switch to ON (engine OFF).

Does the ATF temperature gradually decrease?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or contact in ATF temperature sensor and transmission connector.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

The input signal circuit of TCM to ATF temperature sensor is open or shorted.

Excessive shift shock.

Connect the connectors to TCM and transmission.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn Vehicle Diagnostic Interface switch to ON.

Start the engine.

Move the select lever to "P" or "N" range.

Read the data of turbine speed using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. Compare the tachometer reading with Vehicle Diagnostic Interface indications.

Is the revolution value same as the tachometer reading shown on the combination meter?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in TCM and transmission.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

Brake switch malfunction or input signal open circuit.

Gear is not shifted down when climbing hill.

INSPECT POOR CONTACT

Is there poor contact in the brake switch input signal circuit?

YES

Repair poor contact.

NO

Replace the TCM.

  1. The vehicle speed signal is abnormal.
  2. The circuit in combination meter is faulty.
  3. The harness connector between TCM and vehicle speed sensor is in short or open.
  1. Erroneous idling.
  2. Engine stalls.
  3. Poor driving performance.

Connect all connectors.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Lift-up the vehicle and place rigid racks.

Note. Raise all wheels off floor.

Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn Vehicle Diagnostic Interface switch to ON.

Start the engine.

Read the data of vehicle speed using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. Compare the speedometer reading with Vehicle Diagnostic Interface indications.
  2. Vehicle speed is indicated in "km/h" or "MPH".

Slowly increase the vehicle speed to 60 km/h or 37 MPH.

Note. The speed difference between front and rear wheels may light the ABS warning light, but this indicates no malfunction. When AT control diagnosis is finished, perform the ABS memory clearance procedure of on-board diagnostics system.

Does the speedometer indication increase as Vehicle Diagnostic Interface front speed sensor data increases?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in front vehicle speed sensor circuit.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT. .

Brake switch malfunction or open brake switch input signal circuit.

Gear is not shifted down when climbing hill.

YES

Repair poor contact.

NO

Replace the TCM.

The engine speed input signal circuit is open or shorted.

  1. No lock-up (after engine warm-up).
  2. The AT OIL TEMP warning light remains on when vehicle speed is "0".

Connect the connectors to TCM and ECM.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Start the engine and turn Vehicle Diagnostic Interface switch to ON.

Idle the engine.

Read the data of engine speed using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. Display shows the engine speed signal value sent from ECM.

Is the revolution value same as tachometer reading shown on combination meter?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in TCM and ECM.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

CONFIRM DTC P0725

Replace the ECM with a new one.

Does the DTC appear again, after memory has been cleared?

YES

Replace the TCM.

NO

Replace the ECM.

Vehicle speed sensor malfunction and torque converter turbine speed sensor malfunction, etc. or control valve malfunction.

  1. Shift point is too high or too low.
  2. Excessive shift shock.
  3. Tight cornering condition is occurred.
  4. Gear is not shifted to reverse.
  5. Gear position is held by fail safe function.
  1. Lock up clutch malfunction
  2. Locking of valve

Lock up is not operated.

The output signal circuit of lock-up duty solenoid is open or shorted.

No "lock-up" (after engine warm-up).

YES

CHECK OUTPUT SIGNAL FROM TCM USING VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE

Connect the connectors to TCM and transmission.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Start the engine and turn Vehicle Diagnostic Interface switch to ON.

Warm-up the transmission until ATF temperature is above 80°C (176°F).

Note. If ambient temperature is below 0 °C (32°F), drive the vehicle until ATF reaches its operating temperature.

Stop the engine and turn ignition switch to ON (engine OFF).

Shift the select lever to "P" or "N" range, and depress the accelerator pedal.

Read the data of low clutch duty solenoid using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. Low clutch duty solenoid is indicated in "%".

Is the value 100%?

YES. Go to CHECK OUTPUT SIGNAL FROM TCM USING VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE .

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

Turn the ignition switch to ON (engine OFF).

Move the select lever to "D" range.

Read the data of low clutch duty solenoid.

Is the value 0%?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in transmission.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

The output signal circuit of 2-4 brake duty solenoid is open or shorted.

Excessive shift shock.

Connect all connectors.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Start the engine and turn Vehicle Diagnostic Interface switch to ON.

Warm-up the transmission until ATF temperature is above 80°C (176°F).

Note. If ambient temperature is below 0 °C (32°F), drive the vehicle until ATF reaches its operating temperature.

Stop the engine and turn ignition switch to ON (engine OFF).

Move the select lever to "N" range.

Read the data of 2-4 brake duty solenoid using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. 2-4 brake duty solenoid is indicated in "%".

Is the value 100%?

YES. Go to CHECK OUTPUT SIGNAL FROM TCM USING VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE .

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

Move the select lever to "2" range.

Turn the HOLD switch to ON.

Is the value 0%?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in TCM and transmission.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

The output signal circuit of high clutch duty solenoid is open or shorted.

Excessive shift shock.

Scheme 575: WIRING DIAGRAM

Connect the connectors to TCM and transmission.

Lift-up the vehicle and place rigid racks.

Note. Raise all wheels off ground.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Start the engine and turn Vehicle Diagnostic Interface switch to ON.

Start the engine and warm-up the transmission until ATF temperature is above 80°C (176°F).

Note. If ambient temperature is below 0 °C (32°F), drive the vehicle until ATF reaches its operating temperature.

Read the data of high clutch duty solenoid using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. High clutch duty solenoid is indicated in "%".

Move the select lever to "D" range and slowly increase vehicle speed and measure at 3rd or 4th gear.

Note. The speed difference between front and rear wheels may light the ABS warning light, but this indicates no malfunction. When AT control diagnosis is finished, perform the ABS memory clearance procedure of on-board diagnostics system.

Is the value 0%?

YES. Go to CHECK OUTPUT SIGNAL FROM TCM USING VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE .

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

Return the engine to idling speed and move select lever to "N" range.

Note. The speed difference between front and rear wheels may light the ABS warning light, but this indicates no malfunction. When AT control diagnosis is finished, perform the ABS memory clearance procedure of on-board diagnostics system.

Is the value 100%?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in TCM and transmission.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

The output signal circuit of low & reverse duty solenoid is open or shorted.

Gear is not changed.

Connect all connectors.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Start the engine and turn Vehicle Diagnostic Interface switch to ON.

Warm-up the transmission until ATF temperature is above 80°C (176°F).

Note. If ambient temperature is below 0 °C (32°F), drive the vehicle until ATF reaches its operating temperature.

Stop the engine and turn ignition switch to ON (engine OFF).

Shift the select lever to "P" or "N" range, and depress the accelerator pedal.

Read the data of low & reverse duty solenoid using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. Low & reverse duty solenoid is indicated in "%".

Is the value 100%?

YES. Go to CHECK OUTPUT SIGNAL FROM TCM USING VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC INTERFACE .

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

Move the select lever to "1" range.

Read the data of low & reverse duty solenoid.

Is the value 55%?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in TCM and transmission.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

Shift lock solenoid malfunction, open or short reverse inhibitor control circuit.

  1. Gear is shifted from "N" range to "R" range during driving at 20 km/h (12 MPH) or more.
  2. Gear can not be shifted from "N" range to "R" range.

Read the data of accelerator pedal position sensor using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. Accelerator pedal position SENSOR input signal is indicated.

Is the voltage more than 0.2 V?

YES

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in accelerator pedal position sensor circuit.

NO. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

The input signal circuit of accelerator pedal position sensor is shorted.

  1. Shift point too high or too low.
  2. Excessive shift shock.
  3. Excessive tight corner "braking".

Connect the connectors to TCM, accelerator pedal position sensor and ECM.

Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface to data link connector.

Turn the ignition switch to ON (engine OFF).

Turn the Vehicle Diagnostic Interface switch to ON.

Throttle fully opened.

Read the data of accelerator pedal position sensor using Vehicle Diagnostic Interface.

  1. Accelerator pedal position sensor input signal is indicated.

Is the voltage less than 4.6 V?

YES. Go to CHECK POOR CONTACT .

NO

Even if the POWER indicator blinks, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. A temporary poor contact of the connector or harness may be the cause. Repair the harness or connector in accelerator pedal position sensor circuit.

The power supply circuit of throttle position sensor is open or shorted.

  1. Shift point too high or too low.
  2. Excessive shift shock.
  3. Excessive tight corner "braking".

  2. The FWD switch circuit is open or short.
