- Install scan tool. Turn ignition on and check for DTCs. If DTC P0120 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0120 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in «TESTS W/O CODES»(ref-16659) article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect TP sensor harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, check voltage at TP sensor harness connector terminal No. 4 and ground. See appropriate wiring diagram in «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16646) article. DVOM should read 4.8-5.2 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check circuit between TP sensor harness connector and ECM.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, check continuity between TP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 and ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check circuit between TP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 and ECM.
- Unplug ECM harness connector. Using a jumper wire, jumper ECM harness connector terminal No. 20 to ground. Connect DVOM to TP sensor harness connector terminal No. 3 and ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, check circuit between TP sensor harness terminal No. 3 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 20. Test same wire for short to ground or to another wire. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, check voltage between TP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ground. DVOM should read 4 volts or greater. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, repair circuit between TP sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM.
- Check resistance between TP sensor terminals No. 1 and 4. If resistance is not 3500-6500 ohms, replace TP sensor. If resistance is 3500-6500 ohms, connect ohmmeter between TP sensor terminals No. 1and 3. Observe ohmmeter while opening throttle. If ohmmeter indication does not change smoothly according to throttle position, go to next step. If ohmmeter indication changes smoothly according to throttle position, TP sensor is okay.
- Temporarily substitute with a known-good TP sensor, then retest system. If DTC resets, temporarily substitute with a known-good ECM. Clear DTC. See CLEARING CODES under Self Diagnostic System section. Retest system. If DTC resets, replace ECM.
