Engine Controls - Tests W/o Codes: Other Honda CR-V I

ENGINE WILL NOT START

Ensure steps for spark and fuel testing in BASIC TESTING article have been performed.

  1. Check ignition system. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16246) article.
  2. Check fuel pressure. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16246) article.
  3. Check PGM-FI main relay. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16246) article.
  4. Check Crankshaft Position (CKP), Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder Position (CYP) and/or Crankshaft Speed Fluctuation (CKF) sensors. See appropriate Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  5. Check for contaminated fuel.
  6. Check A/T gear position signal (A/T) or clutch switch signal (M/T). See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16298) article.
  7. Test PCM power and ground circuits. See MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  8. Other possible causes of ENGINE WILL NOT START are engine compression, intake air system leakage, engine locked up, timing belt, starting system, overheating and battery.

HARD TO START

  1. Check fuel pressure. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16246) article.
  2. Check ignition system. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16246) article.
  3. Check MAP. See appropriate DTC P0101, P0106 or P0107 in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  4. Check air cleaner.
  5. Check BARO sensor. See appropriate Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  6. Check EVAP control system.
  7. Check for contaminated fuel.

COLD FAST IDLE TOO LOW

  1. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve for proper operation. See appropriate DTC in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  2. Check fast idle thermo valve. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16298) article.
  3. Check idle speed adjustment. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-16232) article.
  4. Check Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. See appropriate Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  5. Check air cleaner.

COLD FAST IDLE TOO HIGH

  1. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. See appropriate Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  2. Check fast idle thermo valve. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16298) article.
  3. Check idle speed adjustment. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-16232) article.
  4. Check throttle cable and then throttle body for sticking and binding.

IDLE SPEED FLUCTUATES

  1. Check idle speed adjustment. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-16232) article.
  2. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. See appropriate Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  3. Check fast idle thermo valve. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16298) article.
  4. Check throttle cable and then throttle body for sticking and binding.

LACK OF POWER

  1. Check fuel pressure. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16246) article.
  2. Check throttle cable and then throttle body for sticking and binding.
  3. Check Throttle Position (TP) sensor. See DTC P0122, P0123, P1121 and/or P1122 in appropriate «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  4. Check air cleaner and intake air pipe.
  5. Check 3-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) for restriction.
  6. Check for contaminated fuel.

ENGINE STALLS

  1. Check fuel pressure. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16246) article.
  2. Check ignition system. See «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16246) article.
  3. Check MAP sensor. See appropriate DTC P0106, P0107 and/or P0108 in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  4. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. See DTC P1508 or P1509 in «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  5. Check for contaminated fuel.
  6. Check idle speed adjustment. See «ADJUSTMENTS»(ref-16232) article.
  7. Check Crankshaft Position (CKP), Top Dead Center (TDC), Cylinder Position (CYP) and/or Crankshaft Speed Fluctuation (CKF) sensors (if equipped). See appropriate DTCs in the «TESTS W/CODES»(ref-16284) article.
  8. Check brake switch signal. See «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16298) article.

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce conditions creating an intermittent problem, use the following methods

  1. Lightly vibrate component.
  2. Carefully heat component using a hair dryer.
  3. Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
  4. Spray component with water mist.
  5. Remove/apply vacuum source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent problem. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. Use test results to identify a defective component or circuit.
