Note. DTC P1706 indicates an open in A/T gear position switch circuit. Possible causes include a disconnected A/T gear position switch connector, an open in A/T gear position switch wire or a faulty A/T gear position switch.
- Use scan tool to check and record any freeze frame data that could be used later for problem verification. Check A/T gear position switch. See «DTC P1705: A/T GEAR POSITION SWITCH»(ref-16284-S36980506262001010800000) test. Replace switch as needed. If switch is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Shift to "R" position. Measure voltage between PCM connector "B" terminal B16 and PCM connector "A" terminal A9 or A22. See the «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16319) article. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, repair open in wire between terminal B16 and A/T gear position switch.
- Shift to "N" or "P" position. Measure voltage between PCM terminal B25 and PCM terminal A9 or A22. See the «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16319) article. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, repair open in wire between terminal B25 and A/T gear position switch.
- Shift to "D4" position. Measure voltage between PCM terminal B24 and PCM terminal A9 or A22. See the «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16319) article. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, repair open in wire between terminal B24 and A/T gear position switch.
- Shift to "D3" position. Measure voltage between PCM terminal B8 and PCM terminal A9 or A22. See the «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16319) article. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, repair open in wire between PCM terminal B8 and A/T gear position switch.
- Shift to "2" position. Measure voltage between PCM terminal B17 and PCM terminal A9 or A22. See the «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16319) article. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, repair open in wire between PCM terminal B17 and A/T gear position switch.
- Shift to "1" position. Measure voltage between PCM terminal B18 and PCM terminal A9 or A22. See the «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16319) article. If voltage is less than one volt, repair open in wire between PCM terminal B18 and A/T gear position switch. If voltage is one volt or more, check for loose terminals in PCM connectors. Repair as necessary. If terminal connections are okay, substitute a known good PCM, then recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original PCM.
- Shift to "N" or "P" position. Measure voltage between PCM terminal B and PCM terminal A9 or A22. See the «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-16319) article. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, repair open in wire between PCM terminal B and A/T gear position switch.
