RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
Note. Self-diagnostics are limited when accessing codes using MIL. For complete self-diagnostic capabilities, an OBD-II compliant scan tool or Honda PGM Tester is required.
PGM Tester Or OBD-II Scan Tool
Turn ignition off. Connect Honda PGM Tester or OBD-II scan tool to 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC). On Accord and Civic, DLC is located under instrument panel, near driver-side left kick panel. see scheme 1 On CR-V, DLC is located behind right side of center console. On Odyssey, DLC is located behind left side of center console. On Prelude, DLC is located behind access cover on right side of center console. On S2000, DLC is located under passengers side of instrument panel.
On all models, turn ignition on. If using Honda PGM Tester, follow tester prompts. If using OBD-II scan tool, check for and record any DTCs displayed. If using either method, check for and record Freeze Frame Data, current data and any other PCM data. For scan tool operation, refer to manufacturer's instructions. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION and proceed to appropriate DTC testing in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
PCM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TTROUBLE CODES
| CAUTION | Before disconnecting battery, obtain anti-theft code for radio. After battery is reconnected, the word CODE will appear on radio display. Enter 5-digit anti-theft code using select buttons and radio will begin working. If code is entered wrong 10 times, leave radio on at least one hour and enter code correctly. Any time radio power is lost, pre-selected radio stations will have to be set. For more information, see owners manual. |
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can be reset, which clears DTCs, using a Honda PGM tester or OBD-II scan tool following manufacturer's instructions.
DTCs can also be cleared by removing specified fuse for 10 seconds from fuse/relay box. Turn ignition off. On Accord and Odyssey, remove No. 13 CLOCK BACK-UP (7.5-amp) fuse from passenger-side underdash fuse/relay box. On Civic, remove No. 12 BACK-UP (7.5-amp) fuse from underhood fuse/relay block. On CR-V, remove No. 14 BACK-UP (7.5-amp) fuse from underhood fuse/relay block. On Prelude, remove No. 13 CLOCK RADIO (7.5-amp) fuse from underhood fuse/relay block. On S2000, remove No. 16 BACK-UP (7.5-amp) fuse from underdash fuse/relay block. After replacing fuse, reset radio anti-theft code, pre-selected radio stations and clock.
TEST EQUIPMENT
All voltage tests should be performed with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless specifically stated differently in testing procedure. When instructed to use a jumper wire, ensure an in-line 5-amp fuse is included.
Use 2 Backprobe Sets (07SAZ-001000A) to probe Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors when directed by troubleshooting procedures. (Scheme 25)
Engine compartment connectors are sealed on wire side of connector. Backprobing engine compartment connectors can cause damage to connector seals and possible connector terminal failure. To test wires, disconnect specified connector and touch tester probe to specified connector terminal. Inserting probe into connector terminal will damage terminal.
