Engine Controls - Basic Diagnostic Procedures: Other Honda Civic GA

Compression

Check engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge, vacuum gauge, or an engine analyzer. See engine analyzer manufacturer's manual for specific instructions.

WARNINGDO NOT use ignition switch during compression test. Use a remote starter to crank engine. Fuel injectors on many models are triggered by ignition switch during cranking mode, which can create a fire hazard, contaminate engine's oiling system or cause damage to catalytic converter.

Check compression pressure with engine at normal operating temperature, all spark plugs removed, throttle valves wide open and at specified cranking speed. Crank engine at least 6 revolutions to determine engine compression. See ENGINE COMPRESSION table.

ENGINE COMPRESSION

Exhaust System Backpressure

Exhaust system can be checked using a vacuum or pressure gauge. Remove front (primary) Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S). Connect a 0-5 psi pressure gauge, and run engine at 2500 RPM. If exhaust system backpressure exceeds 2 psi (12 kPa), exhaust system or catalytic converter is plugged.

If using a vacuum gauge, connect vacuum gauge hose to intake manifold vacuum port and start engine. Observe vacuum gauge. Open throttle part way and hold steady. If vacuum slowly drops after stabilizing, check exhaust system for restrictions.

FUEL SYSTEM

WARNINGAlways relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components.

Accord, Odyssey & S2000

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove fuel filler cap. On S2000, remove intake manifold cover. On all models, using a wrench, loosen fuel pulsation damper one full turn. Cover damper and wrench with a shop towel. Replace copper washers on fuel pulsation damper before tightening.

Civic & CR-V

Remove negative battery terminal. Remove fuel tank filler cap. Place a shop towel around fuel filter. Using one wrench to hold filter and other to loosen banjo bolt at top of fuel filter one turn. Replace copper washers on banjo bolt before tightening.

Prelude

Remove negative battery terminal. Remove fuel tank filler cap. Place a shop towel over banjo bolt at fuel rail. Slowly loose banjo bolt at fuel rail one full turn. Replace copper washers on banjo bolt before tightening.

FUEL PRESSURE

Note. If vehicle starts and runs, fuel pump PGM-FI main relay is okay.

Spark

On vehicles equipped with a distributor, check for spark at secondary ignition coil wire and each spark plug wire using a spark tester. Check spark plug wire resistance on suspect wires. Resistance should be less than 25,000 ohms at 68°F (20°C).

IGNITION CONTROL MODULE

Note. If MIL comes on, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. Before preforming IGNITION CONTROL MODULE INPUT TEST, ensure ignition, fuel and emissions systems are operating properly. Ignition Control Module (ICM) is located in distributor housing. (Схема №4)- (Схема №9).

Note. Manufacturer does not provide tests for ICM, they provide a series of input test to ensure rest of system is working properly before replacing components. If all tests check okay, ICM should be replaced.

IDLE SPEED & IGNITION TIMING

Ensure idle speed and ignition timing are set to specification. See appropriate IDLE SPEED & IGNITION TIMING table. For adjustment procedures, see ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article. Before checking or adjusting idle, ensure MIL has not been reported on, timing is correct, and that spark plugs, air cleaner and PCV system are okay.

For further information on idle speed adjustments and specifications, see ON-VEHICLE ADJUSTMENTS article.
