TEST EQUIPMENT
All voltage tests should be performed with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless specifically stated differently in testing procedure.
On Accord and Prelude, when directed by testing to install Engine Control Module (ECM) test harness, turn ignition off. Connect ECM Test Harness (07LAJ-PT3010A) between ECM and ECM connector. (Scheme 16) Follow testing directions. For test harness terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION.

ACCORD DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
When directed by testing procedure to install test equipment, see TEST EQUIPMENT . Some testing is referenced by engine code. For engine code identification, see ENGINE CODE IDENTIFICATION .
DTC 0 - ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM)
- If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) never comes on, even for 2 seconds after ignition is turned on, go to next step. If MIL stays on or comes on after 2 seconds, go to step 5).
- Turn ignition on. If low oil pressure light is on, go to next step. If low oil pressure light is not on, repair short in Yellow wire between No. 1 BACK-UP LIGHTS, METER LIGHTS (10-amp) fuse and gauge assembly.
- Try to start engine. If engine starts go to step 4). If engine does not start, turn ignition off. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Measure voltage between test harness connector terminal A23 and ground, and A24 and ground one at a time. If less than one volt is present on either terminal, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If more than one volt is present, repair open in Black wire(s) between ECM connector terminal A23 or A24 and ground (G101) located at left side of intake manifold.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Connect test harness terminal A13 to ground. Turn ignition on. If MIL illuminates, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If MIL does not illuminate, replace MIL bulb or repair open Light Green/Red wire between ECM connector terminal A13 and gauge assembly.
- Connect SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100) to service check connector. Turn ignition on. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates a DTC, go to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-15915-S27861855162001122700000) . After identifying DTC, go to appropriate testing in DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES. If MIL does not indicate a DTC, go to next step.
- Remove SCS service connector from service check connector. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to step 10).
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminal D4 (+) and D22 (-). If approximately 5 volts is present, go to next step. If approximately 5 volts is not present, repair short to ground in Red wire between ECM connector terminal D4 and service check connector.
- Connect SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100) to service check connector. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D4 (+) and D22 (-). If approximately 5 volts is not present, go to next step. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open Red wire between ECM connector terminal D4 and service check connector or repair open Green/Blue wire between ECM connector terminal D22 and service check connector. After repair disconnect SCS service connector. Test drive car and recheck MIL for a DTC.
- Remove SCS service connector from service check connector. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM connector "A" from ECM. DO NOT disconnect main wiring harness (on vehicle) from test harness. Turn ignition on. If MIL is not on, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If MIL is on, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire between ECM connector terminal A13 and MIL.
- Inspect No. 33 PGM-FI MAIN RELAY (15-amp) fuse located in underhood fuse/relay box. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is open, replace fuse and repair short in White/Green wire between PGM-FI MAIN RELAY (15-amp) fuse and PGM-FI main relay.
- Inspect No. 2 FUEL PUMP (15-amp) fuse in underdash fuse/relay box. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is open, repair short in Red/White wire between underdash fuse/relay box and PGM-FI main relay.
- Turn ignition on. While observing MIL, disconnect 3-pin Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, Throttle Position (TP) sensor and EGR valve lift sensor, each one at a time. If MIL remained on, go to next step. If MIL does not remain on, replace sensor that caused MIL to go out.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Disconnect ECM connector "D" from ECM. DO NOT disconnect main wiring harness (on vehicle) from test harness. Check for continuity between ground and test harness terminals D19 and D20. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short to ground in Yellow/White wire between ECM connector terminal D19 and MAP sensor or repair short to ground in Yellow/Blue wire between ECM connector terminal D20 and TP sensor or EGR valve lift sensor.
- Reconnect all sensor connectors. Reconnect ECM connector "D" to ECM. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and test harness terminal A26. Record voltage reading. Measure voltage between ground and test harness terminal B2. Record voltage reading. If voltage reading for either terminal was less than one volt, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If voltage reading for either terminal is more than one volt, repair open in Brown/Black wire between ECM terminals A26 or B2 and ground (G101) located at left side of intake manifold.
DTC 1 - HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S)
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine. Hold engine at 3000 RPM with no load on engine until radiator fan comes on. When radiator fan comes on, let engine idle for one minute before road testing. Connect SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100) to service check connector.
- Road test vehicle with automatic transmission in 2 position or manual transmission in 4th gear. Starting at 1600 RPM accelerate using Wide Open Throttle (WOT) for at least 5 seconds. Then decelerate for at least 5 seconds with throttle completely closed.
- If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 1, perform ACCORD (DTC 43) FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM testing. If MIL does not indicate DTC 1, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at right shock tower and left shock tower. Repair as necessary.
DTC 3 - MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See ECM «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine and allow it to idle. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 3, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 3, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at right shock tower, MAP sensor and ECM. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 3-pin MAP sensor connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between MAP sensor connector Yellow/White wire and ground. If approximately 5 volts is present, go to step 4). if approximately 5 volts is not present, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Connect test harness "D" connector to ECM only (not main wiring harness). Measure voltage between test harness terminals D19 and D21. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open in Yellow/White wire between ECM connector terminal D19 and MAP sensor. If approximately 5 volts is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
- Measure voltage between MAP sensor connector Yellow/White wire and Green/White wire. If approximately 5 volts is present, go to next step. If approximately 5 volts is not present, repair open in Green/White wire between ECM connector terminal D21 and MAP sensor.
- Measure voltage between MAP sensor connector White/Yellow wire and Green/White wire. If approximately 5 volts is present, go to next step. If approximately 5 volts is not present, go to step 7).
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 3-pin MAP sensor connector. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D17 and D21. If approximately 3 volts is present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If approximately 3 volts is not present, replace MAP sensor.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness connector "D" to ECM only (not main wiring harness). Measure voltage between test harness terminals D17 and D21. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open or short in White/Yellow wire between ECM connector terminal D17 and MAP sensor. If approximately 5 volts is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
DTC 4, 8 & 9 - CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR, TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC) SENSOR & CYLINDER POSITION (CYP) SENSOR
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See ECM «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 4, 8 or 9, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 4, 8 or 9, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at right shock tower and TDC/CKP/CYP sensor 8-pin connector (located near distributor). Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 8-pin TDC/CKP/CYP sensor (located near distributor). Measure resistance between terminals of indicated sensor on TDC/CKP/CYP connector. See SENSOR TESTING table. SENSOR TESTING Application 8-Pin Connector Terminal No. Test Harness Terminal No. Wire Color CKP Sensor (1) 2 B15 Blue/Green CKP Sensor 6 B16 Blue/Yellow TDC Sensor (2) 3 B13 Orange/Blue TDC Sensor 7 B14 White/Blue CYP Sensor (3) 4 B11 Orange CYP Sensor 8 B12 White (1) Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. (2) Top Dead Center (TDC) sensor. (3) Cylinder Position (CYP) sensor.
- Resistance should be 700-1300 ohms, for each sensor on VTEC engine. Resistance should be 350-700 ohms, for each sensor on non-VTEC engine. On all engines, if resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace distributor ignition housing.
- Check for continuity between each terminal of indicated sensor and ground. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, replace distributor ignition housing.
- Reconnect 8-pin TDC/CKP/CYP sensor (located near distributor). Connect test harness to main wiring harness only (not to ECM). Measure resistance between test harness terminals B15 and B16 (for CKP sensor). Record reading. Measure resistance between test harness terminals B13 and B14 (for TDC sensor). Record reading. Measure resistance between test harness terminals B11 and B12 (for CYP sensor). Record reading.
- Resistance should be 700-1300 ohms, for each sensor on VTEC engine. Resistance should be 350-700 ohms, for each sensor on non-VTEC engine. On all engines, if resistance is within specification, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in appropriate sensor wire. See «SENSOR TESTING»(ref-15915-S39424776572001122700000) table for wire identification.
- Check for continuity to ground between test harness terminal B11 (CYP sensor), terminal B13 (TDC sensor), and terminal B15 (CKP sensor). If continuity is present for any terminal, repair short to ground in appropriate wire. If continuity is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
DTC 6 - ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Turn ignition on. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 6, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 6, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at right shock tower, left shock tower, ECT sensor, Transmission Control Module (TCM), and ECM. Repair as necessary.
- Start engine. Hold engine at 3000 RPM with no load on engine until radiator fan comes on. When radiator fan comes on, let engine idle.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 2-pin Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. Measure resistance between ECT sensor terminals. If resistance is 200-400 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 200-400 ohms, replace ECT sensor.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ECT sensor connector Red/White wire and ground. If approximately 5 volts is not present, go to step 6). If approximately 5 volts is present, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ECT sensor connector terminals. If approximately 5 volts is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open Green/Blue wire between ECM connector terminal D22 and ECT sensor.
- Turn ignition off. On manual transmission vehicles, go to next step. On automatic transmission vehicles, disconnect 22-pin connector from Transmission Control Module (TCM). Turn ignition on. If approximately 5 volts is present, replace TCM. If approximately 5 volts is not present, turn ignition off and reconnect TCM connector.
- On automatic and manual transmission vehicles, connect test harness "D" connector to ECM only (not main wiring harness). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D13 and D22.
- If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open or short in Red/White wire between ECM connector terminal D13 and ECT sensor and/or repair short in Red/White wire between ECM connector terminal D13 and TCM. If approximately 5 volts is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
DTC 7 - THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 7, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 7, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at left shock tower, TP sensor, Transmission Control Module (TCM), and ECM. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 3-pin Throttle Position (TP) sensor. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between TP sensor connector Yellow/Blue wire and Green/Blue wire. If approximately 5 volts is present, go to step 5). If approximately 5 volts is not present, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between TP sensor Yellow/Blue wire and ground. If approximately 5 volts is not present, go to next step. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open Green/Blue wire between ECM connector terminal D22 and TP sensor.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness "D" connector to ECM only (not main wiring harness). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D20 and D22. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open in Yellow/Blue wire between ECM connector terminal D20 and TP sensor. If approximately 5 volts is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 3-pin TP sensor connector. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D11 and D22.
- While measuring voltage, slowly move throttle from full closed position to Wide Open Throttle (WOT). Voltage should smoothly change from approximately .5 volt at closed throttle to approximately 4.5 volts at WOT. If voltage smoothly changes, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If voltage does not smoothly change, go to next step.
- On manual transmission vehicles, go to step 8). On automatic transmission vehicles, turn ignition off. Disconnect 22-pin Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. Turn ignition on. Slowly move throttle from full closed position to Wide Open Throttle (WOT). Voltage should smoothly change from approximately .5 volt at closed throttle to approximately 4 volts at WOT. If voltage smoothly changes, replace TCM. If voltage does not smoothly change, go to next step.
- Replace TP sensor and/or repair open or short in Red/Black wire between ECM connector terminal D11, TCM and TP sensor.
DTC 10 - INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Turn ignition on. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 10, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 10, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at left shock tower, right shock tower, Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, and ECM. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 2-pin Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector. Measure resistance between IAT sensor terminals. If resistance is 0.4-4.0 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 0.4-4.0 ohms, replace IAT sensor.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between IAT sensor connector Red/Yellow wire and ground. If approximately 5 volts is present, go to step 5). If approximately 5 volts is not present, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness "D" connector to ECM only (not main wiring harness). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D15 and D22. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open or short in Red/Yellow wire between ECM connector terminal D15 and IAT sensor. If approximately 5 volts is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
- Measure voltage between IAT sensor connector terminals. If approximately 5 volts is present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If approximately 5 volts is not present, repair open in Green/Blue wire between ECM connector terminal D22 and IAT sensor.
DTC 12 - EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) VALVE LIFT SENSOR
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Connect SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100) to service check connector. Start engine. Hold engine at 3000 RPM with no load on engine until radiator fan comes on. When radiator fan comes on, let engine idle. Drive vehicle for approximately 10 minutes. While driving vehicle, keep engine speed 1700-2500 RPM.
- If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 12, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 12, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at left shock tower, right shock tower, EGR valve, EGR control solenoid (located forward of left shock tower), and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- With engine at idle, disconnect hose from EGR valve. Connect a vacuum pump to hose disconnected from EGR valve. If vacuum is present, go to next step. If vacuum is not present, go to step 6).
- Disconnect 2-pin EGR control solenoid connector (located forward of left shock tower). Check EGR vacuum hose for vacuum again. If vacuum is not present, go to next step. If vacuum is present, check vacuum hose routing for entire EGR system. Repair as necessary. If vacuum hose routing is okay, replace EGR control solenoid.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM connector "A" from ECM. DO NOT disconnect main wiring harness (on vehicle) from test harness. Check for continuity between 2-pin EGR control solenoid connector Red wire and ground. If continuity is present, repair short in Red wire between EGR control solenoid and ECM terminal A6. If continuity is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
- Disconnect vacuum pump from EGR vacuum hose. Connect vacuum pump to EGR valve. With engine idling, apply 8 in. Hg of vacuum to EGR valve. If engine runs rough or stalls, and EGR valve holds vacuum, go to next step. If engine does not run rough or stall, and EGR valve does not hold vacuum, replace EGR valve.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 2-pin EGR control solenoid connector (located forward of left shock tower). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between EGR control solenoid connector Black/Yellow wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between EGR control solenoid and ECM (7.5 amp) fuse located in underdash fuse/relay box.
- Reconnect vacuum pump to EGR vacuum hose. Start engine and let it idle. Connect battery positive terminal to 2-pin EGR control solenoid connector Black/Yellow wire. Connect battery negative terminal to EGR control solenoid connector Red wire. If vacuum pump indicates approximately 8 in. Hg within one second, go to next step. If vacuum pump does not indicate approximately 8 in. Hg within one second, go to step 13).
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 2-pin EGR control solenoid connector. Disconnect 3-pin EGR valve lift sensor connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between EGR valve lift sensor connector Yellow/Blue wire and Green/Blue wire. If voltage is approximately 5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not approximately 5 volts, go to step 15).
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 3-pin EGR valve lift sensor connector. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D12 and D22. Voltage should be approximately 1.2 volts with no vacuum applied to EGR valve, and approximately 4.3 volts with 8 in. Hg applied to EGR valve. If voltage is near specified voltage, go to next step. If voltage is not near specified voltage, repair open or short in White/Black wire between EGR valve lift sensor and ECM connector terminal D12. If White/Black wire is okay, replace EGR valve.
- As vacuum is applied and removed from EGR valve, if voltage consistently increases and decreases as vacuum increases and decreases, go to next step. As vacuum is applied and removed from EGR valve, if voltage does not consistently increases and decreases as vacuum increases and decreases, replace EGR valve.
- Reconnect vacuum hose to EGR valve. Start engine and let it idle. Using a jumper wire, connect test harness terminal A6 to A26. If engine runs rough or stalls, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If engine does not run rough or stall, repair open Red wire between ECM connector terminal A6 and EGR control solenoid.
- Turn ignition off. Inspect EGR vacuum supply hose back through EGR control solenoid and EGR vacuum control valve to intake manifold. If hoses are okay, go to next step. If hoses are not okay, repair as necessary.
- Disconnect EGR control solenoid lower hose. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected hose. If 6-10 in. Hg is present, replace EGR control solenoid. If 6-10 in. Hg is not present, replace EGR vacuum control valve (located forward of left shock tower, behind EGR control solenoid).
- Measure voltage between EGR valve lift sensor connector Yellow/Blue wire and ground. If approximately 5 volts is not present, go to next step. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open in Green/Blue wire between EGR valve lift sensor and ECM connector terminal D22.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D20 and D22. If approximately 5 volts is present, repair open in Yellow/Blue wire between EGR valve lift sensor and ECM connector terminal D20. If approximately 5 volts is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
DTC 13 - BAROMETRIC PRESSURE (BARO) SENSOR
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Turn ignition on. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 13, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 13, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent.
- If vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, go to next step. If vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness to main wiring harness only (not to ECM). Disconnect 22-pin Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. Check for continuity between test harness terminal D5 and ground. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short in Blue/White wire between ECM connector terminal D5 and TCM.
- Substitute a known-good TCM and recheck. If MIL indicates DTC 13, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If MIL does not indicate DTC 13, replace original TCM.
DTC 14 - IDLE AIR CONTROL (IAC) VALVE
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 14, go to step 3). If MIL does not indicate DTC 14, go to next step.
- With engine running and accelerator pedal released, disconnect 2-pin Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connector. If engine RPM reduces, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at left shock tower, IAC valve, and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- Disconnect 2-pin Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connector. Measure voltage between IAC valve connector Yellow/Black wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Yellow/Black wire between IAC valve and PGM-FI main relay.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 2-pin IAC valve connector. Connect test harness connector "A" to main wiring harness only (not to ECM). Turn ignition on. Momentarily connect test harness terminal A9 to A23 several times. If IAC valve clicks, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If IAC valve does not click, check for an open or short in Black/Blue wire between IAC valve and ECM connector terminal A9. If Black/Blue wire is okay, replace IAC valve.
DTC 15 - IGNITION OUTPUT SIGNAL
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 15, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 15, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at left shock tower, Ignition Control Module (ICM), and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 2-pin connector from distributor. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between 2-pin distributor connector (harness side) Black/Yellow wire (non-VTEC engine) or Yellow wire (VTEC engine) and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to step 5). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
- On VTEC engine, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between 2-pin distributor connector and ignition switch. Test ignition coil. See «BASIC TESTING - 2.2L»(ref-15914) article. If ignition coil is okay, go to next step. If ignition coil is not okay, replace ignition coil.
- Repair open in Yellow wire between 2-pin distributor connector and ignition coil, and/or repair open in Black/Yellow wire between ignition coil and ignition switch.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 2-pin distributor connector. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals A21 and A26.
- If battery voltage is present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If battery voltage is not present, replace Ignition Control Module (ICM) and/or repair open or short in Yellow/Green wire between ICM and Engine Control Module (ECM) connector terminal A21 (if Yellow/Green wire was shorted, ICM may be damaged).
DTC 16 - FUEL INJECTOR
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine and let it idle. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 16, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 16, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at left shock tower, fuel injectors, fuel injector resistor (located in left rear corner of engine compartment), and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- Start engine and listen to each injector for a clicking sound. Note if any injectors do not click. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 2-pin injector connector from fuel injector(s) that do not make a clicking sound. Measure resistance between injector terminals. If resistance is 1.5-2.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 1.5-2.5 ohms, replace fuel injector(s).
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between each 2-pin injector connector Red/Black wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 5).
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 2-pin injector connector. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage one at a time between test harness terminals A1 (injector No. 1), A3 (injector No. 2), A5 (injector No. 3), A2 (injector No. 4) and A23 (ground). If battery voltage is present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If battery voltage is not present, repair open between ECM connector terminal A1, A3, A5 or A2 and injector connector.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 6-pin injector resistor connector (located in left rear corner of engine compartment). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between injector resistor connector Red/Black wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Yellow/Black wire between injector resistor and PGM-FI main relay.
- Test injector resistor. See the appropriate «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - 2.2L»(ref-15916) article. If injector resistor is okay, repair open Red/Black wire between applicable 2-pin injector connector and injector resistor.
DTC 17 - VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Road test with vehicle in position 2 (A/T) or 2nd gear (M/T), accelerate to 4000 RPM, then decelerate to 1500 RPM with throttle fully closed for at least 5 seconds.
- If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 17, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 17, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at left shock tower, right shock tower, Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- Block rear wheels and set parking brake. Raise and support front of vehicle. Turn ignition off. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on.
- Ensure transmission is in Neutral position. Block right front wheel and slowly rotate left front wheel. While slowly rotating left front wheel, measure voltage between test harness terminals A26 and B10. If voltage pulsates 0-5 volts, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If voltage does not pulsate 0-5 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect test harness "B" connector from ECM only (not main wiring harness). Turn ignition on. Block right front wheel and slowly rotate left front wheel. While slowly rotating left front wheel, measure voltage between test harness terminals A26 and B10. If voltage pulsates 0-5 volts, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If voltage does not pulsate 0-5 volts, go to next step.
- Repair short in Orange wire between ECM connector terminal B10 and VSS or cruise control unit and/or repair open in Orange wire between ECM connector terminal B10 and VSS. If Orange wire is okay, see «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - 2.2L»(ref-15916) article.
DTC 20 - ELECTRICAL LOAD DETECTOR (ELD)
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine and let it idle. Turn on headlights. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 20, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 20, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at Electrical Load Detector (ELD), ground G402 (located behind right kick panel, forward most ground connection), and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary. ELD is located in underhood fuse/relay box.
- Turn ignition and headlights off. Disconnect 3-pin Electrical Load Detector (ELD) connector. ELD is located in underhood fuse/relay box. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ELD connector Black/Yellow wire and Black wire. If battery voltage is present, go to step 4). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ELD connector Black/Yellow wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, repair open Black wire between 3-pin ELD connector and G402 (located behind right kick panel, forward most ground connection). If battery voltage is not present, repair open Black/Yellow wire between ECM (7.5 amp) fuse located in underdash fuse/relay box and 3-pin ELD connector located in underhood fuse/relay box.
- Measure voltage between ELD connector Green/Red wire and ground. If approximately 5 volts is present, go to next step. If approximately 5 volts is not present, check for an open or short in Green/Red wire between ECM connector terminal D10 and 3-pin ELD connector. If Green/Red wire is okay, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 3-pin ELD connector. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Start engine and let it idle. Measure voltage between test harness terminals A26 and D10. While measuring voltage at test harness, turn headlights on. If voltage drops when headlights are turned on, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If voltage does not drop when headlights are turned on, replace ELD.
DTC 21 - VARIABLE VALVE TIMING & VTEC SOLENOID VALVE
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine. Allow engine to run until cooling fan comes on. Test drive vehicle. Accelerate in first gear until engine speed is more than 4000 RPM. Hold engine at more than 4000 RPM for at least 2 seconds. If MIL does not illuminate, accelerate in first gear until engine speed is more than 4000 RPM for at least 2 seconds 2 more times. If MIL comes on during road test, go to next step.
- If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 21, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 21, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at VTEC solenoid (located on corner of cylinder head) and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 1-pin VTEC solenoid connector (located on corner of cylinder head). Check for continuity between VTEC solenoid connector and ground. If resistance is 14-30 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 14-30 ohms, replace VTEC solenoid.
- Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Check for continuity between test harness connector terminal A4 and VTEC solenoid connector (harness side). If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open Green/Yellow wire between ECM connector terminal A4 and VTEC solenoid connector.
- Check for continuity between VTEC solenoid connector (harness side) and ground. If continuity is not present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If continuity is present, repair short in Green/Yellow wire between ECM connector terminal A4 and VTEC solenoid connector.
DTC 22 - VALVE LIFT ELECTRONIC CONTROL (VTEC) PRESSURE SWITCH
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine. Allow engine to run until cooling fan comes on. Test drive vehicle. Accelerate in first gear until engine speed is more than 4000 RPM. Hold engine at more than 4000 RPM for at least 2 seconds. If MIL does not illuminate, accelerate in first gear until engine speed is more than 4000 RPM for at least 2 seconds 2 more times. If MIL comes on during road test, go to next step.
- If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 22, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 22, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at VTEC pressure switch (located on corner of cylinder head under VTEC solenoid) and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 2-pin VTEC pressure switch connector (located on corner of cylinder head under VTEC solenoid). Check for continuity between VTEC pressure switch connector terminals (component side). If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, replace VTEC pressure switch.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between VTEC pressure switch connector (harness side) Blue/Black wire and ground. If approximately 12 volts is present, go to next step. If approximately 12 volts is not present, check Blue/Black wire for an open or short between 2-pin VTEC pressure switch connector and ECM connector terminal D6. If Blue/Black wire is okay, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck.
- Measure voltage between VTEC pressure switch connector terminals (harness side). If approximately 12 volts is present, go to next step. If approximately 12 volts is not present, repair open Brown/Black wire between 2-pin VTEC pressure switch connector and ground G101 (located to right of brake booster).
- Turn ignition off. Remove VTEC pressure switch. Install Pressure Gauge Adaptor (07NAJ-P07010A) onto engine. Install VTEC pressure switch into pressure gauge adaptor. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Ensure 2-pin VTEC pressure switch connector is connected. Connect a tachometer to engine. Start engine. Allow engine to run until cooling fan comes on. CAUTION: Perform steps 7) and 8) in less than one minute. Engine damage is possible at high RPM with no load on engine.
- Check oil pressure at 1000, 2000, and 4000 RPM. If oil pressure is more than 7 psi (49 kPa), go to next step. If oil pressure is less than 7 psi (49 kPa), inspect VTEC solenoid for malfunction.
- Disconnect 1-pin VTEC solenoid connector (located on corner of cylinder head). Connect battery positive terminal to VTEC solenoid connector (component side) Green/Yellow wire. Start engine. Allow engine to run until cooling fan comes on. Check oil pressure at 3000 RPM. If oil pressure is more than 36 psi (250 kPa), go to next step. If oil pressure is less than 36 psi (250 kPa), inspect VTEC solenoid for malfunction. CAUTION: Run engine up to more than 5000 RPM only for an instant during step 9).
- Turn ignition off. Ensure 2-pin VTEC pressure switch connector is connected. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . With battery positive terminal connected to VTEC solenoid connector (component side), measure voltage between test harness connector terminals D6 and D22. If approximately 12 volts is present with engine speed more than 5000 RPM, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If approximately 12 volts is not present with engine speed more than 5000 RPM, replace VTEC pressure switch.
DTC 30 - A/T FI SIGNAL A
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Test drive vehicle. Drive vehicle far enough so transmission upshifts and downshifts several times. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 30, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 30, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at Transmission Control Module (TCM) and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness to main wiring harness only (not to ECM). Disconnect 22-pin Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. Check for continuity between test harness terminal B3 and ground. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short in White/Red wire between ECM connector terminal B3 and TCM.
- Check for continuity of Green/Blue wire between test harness terminal B3 and 22-pin TCM connector. If continuity is present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If continuity is not present, repair open White/Red wire between ECM connector terminal B3 and TCM.
DTC 31 - A/T FI SIGNAL B
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Test drive vehicle. Drive vehicle far enough so transmission upshifts and downshifts several times. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 31, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 31, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at Transmission Control Module (TCM) and Engine Control Module (ECM). Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness to main wiring harness only (not to ECM). Disconnect 22-pin Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. Check for continuity between test harness terminal B4 and ground. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short in Green wire between ECM connector terminal B4 and TCM.
- Check for continuity of Green wire between test harness terminal B4 and 22-pin TCM connector. If continuity is present, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM. If continuity is not present, repair open Green wire between ECM connector terminal B4 and TCM.
DTC 41 - HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (HO2S) HEATER
- Perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) . Start engine. If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) indicates DTC 41, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 41, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at right shock tower and left shock tower. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect HO2S 4-pin connector. Measure resistance between HO2S connector (component side) terminals No. 3 and 4. If resistance is 10-40 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 10-40 ohms, replace HO2S.
- Check for continuity between ground and HO2S connector (component side) terminals No. 3 and 4. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, replace HO2S.
- Check for continuity between HO2S connector (component side) terminal No. 4 and terminals No. 1 and 2 individually. If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, replace HO2S.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage on HO2S connector (harness side) between Yellow/Black wire and Orange/Black wire. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, go to step 9).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM connector "A". Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at HO2S connector (harness side) between Yellow/Black wire and Orange/Black wire. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short in Orange/Black wire between ECM connector terminal A11 and HO2S.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect HO2S connector. Connect test harness "A" connector to main wiring harness only (not to ECM). Connect an ammeter between test harness connector terminals A11 and A26. Turn ignition on. If current immediately drops to less than .1 amp, replace HO2S. If current does not immediately drop to less than .1 amp, monitor current over a 5 minute period.
- If current is less than .1 amp, replace HO2S. If current is more than .1 amp, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
- Measure voltage between HO2S connector (harness side) Yellow/Black wire and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open Yellow/Black wire between HO2S and PGM-FI main relay.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 4-pin HO2S connector. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals A11 (+) and A23 (-). If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Orange/Black wire between ECM connector terminal A11 and HO2S.
DTC 43 - FUEL SUPPLY SYSTEM
Note. If referenced to this test from ACCORD (DTC 1) testing, start with step 4).
- If DTC 43 is accompanied by an illuminated Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) and poor driveability, repair vehicle's fuel supply system. If DTC 43 is not accompanied by an illuminated MIL and poor driveability, perform ECM reset procedure. See «ECM RESET PROCEDURE/CLEARING CODES»(ref-15915-S15547566932001122700000) .
- Connect SCS Service Connector (07PAZ-0010100) to service check connector. Start engine. Hold engine at 3000 RPM with no load on engine until radiator fan comes on. When radiator fan comes on, let engine idle for one minute.
- Raise engine speed to 3000 RPM and hold for at least one minute. DO NOT vary throttle position even if engine RPM drops. If MIL indicates DTC 43, go to next step. If MIL does not indicate DTC 43, system is functioning properly at this time. Failure is intermittent. Check for poor connections or loose wires at connectors located at right shock tower and left shock tower. Repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Connect test harness between ECM and ECM connector. See «TEST EQUIPMENT»(ref-15915-S33695095712001122700000) . With ignition off, wait at least 2 minutes. Install a jumper wire between test harness terminals A11 and A26. Connect a voltmeter between test harness terminals D14 and A26. Monitor voltmeter as soon as ignition is turned on.
- If voltage is .1 volt or less when ignition is first turned on, go to next step. If voltage is not .1 volt or less when ignition if first turned on, go to step 8).
- Disconnect 4-pin HO2S connector. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D14 (+) and A26 (-). If voltage is more than .1 volt, replace HO2S. If voltage is less than .1 volt, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect test harness connector "D" from main wiring harness. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between test harness terminals D14 (+) and A26 (-). If voltage is more than .1 volt, repair short in White/Red wire between ECM connector terminal D14 and HO2S. If voltage is less than .1 volt, substitute a known-good ECM and recheck. If symptom or indication goes away, replace original ECM.
- Disconnect 4-pin HO2S connector. Measure voltage on HO2S connector (harness side) between White/Red wire and Green/Blue wire. If voltage is more than .1 volt, replace HO2S. If voltage is less than .1 volt, check for open in White/Red wire between ECM connector terminal D14 and HO2S. Repair as necessary. If White/Red wire is okay, repair open in Green/Blue wire between ECM connector terminal D22 and HO2S.
