External Controls - Overview

The selector lever cable is clipped onto a ball head on the selector lever.

At the transaxle end it is clipped onto the ball head on the selector shaft lever. The cable is moved in an axial direction by operation of the selector lever. The axial movement is converted into a rotational movement of the selector shaft by the selector shaft lever. The selector lever cable adjuster is located at the transmission end of the cable.

The selector lever with a SelectShift™ switch has the following positions

  1. P
  2. R
  3. N
  4. D
  5. S

In the selector lever position S , the transmission can be manually shifted by operating the SelectShift™ switch which is located on the side of the selector lever. The SelectShift™ switch is hard-wired to the TCM. The upshift or downshift signal is transmitted to the TCM via two wires.

Only with the ignition switched on, the brake pedal pressed and the parking lock release button pressed, can the selector lever be moved out of the P position.

The engine can only be started in the P or N position.

The following components are integrated in the selector lever with a SelectShift™ switch assembly

  1. SelectShift™ switch
  2. Brake shift interlock actuator
  3. LED for the selector lever position display

The selector lever with an O/D cancel switch has the following positions

  1. P
  2. R
  3. N
  4. D
  5. L (Low)

The following components are integrated in the selector lever with a O/D cancel switch assembly

  1. O/D cancel switch
  2. Brake shift interlock actuator
  3. LED for the selector lever position display

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

The BCM provides power to the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator (BSIA) solenoid. When the BCM receives a brake pedal applied input, voltage is applied to the brake shift interlock solenoid. When the solenoid is energized, the plunger is pulled inward allowing the selector lever to move from the park position.

The SelectShift™ switch is a toggle switch integral to the selector lever knob. When the selector lever is placed in the S position, the upshift/downshift feature becomes activated. If a new switch is required install a new selector lever knob.

The TCS/Grade Assist is a momentary contact switch located on the selector lever. Pressing the TCS will engage or disengage the O/D function of the transmission. When the O/D is disengaged, the O/D icon will illuminate OFF on the IPC. Each time the ignition switch is cycled, the transmission will automatically provide O/D operation regardless of TCS position the last time the engine was running.
