MODULE NETWORK INPUT MESSAGES - APIM

Image Display

Note. The liftgate must remain closed for correct operation of the video camera system.

All of the video camera features are enabled and disabled within the FDIM menu screen.

The video camera system has 5 video features

  1. Fixed guidelines - assists the driver with backing into a parking space or aligning the vehicle with an object.
  2. Active guidelines - projects the intended path of the vehicle based upon steering wheel input.
  3. Visual park aid alert - assists the driver to visually see the object causing the parking aid system to sound.
  4. Manual zoom - assists the driver with connecting or towing a trailer, allowing the driver to manually zoom closer to an object behind the vehicle.
  5. Video camera delay - allows the driver to see the image behind the vehicle after the vehicle is shifted out of REVERSE. The image is not displayed if the vehicle is shifted into PARK.

For each of these system features, except the camera delay feature, the APIM receives the FDIM touch inputs and sends backup camera commands to the IPM-B. The IPM-B then sends the command to the video camera. The video camera outputs the video signal to the APIM, which in turn displays the video on the FDIM.

The video camera delay feature is controlled within the APIM.

The IPM-B and the video camera communicate on a LIN, which is a dedicated single wire communication network.

The messages sent from the IPM-B to the video camera are

  1. Transmission selector (PRNDL) status
  2. Liftgate ajar status
  3. Camera configuration data
  4. Display manual zoom request
  5. Parking aid audible warning status
  6. Parking aid sensor distance to object data

The messages sent from the video camera to the IPM-B are

  1. Camera status
  2. Display zoom status
  3. Camera part number data
  4. Visual park aid alert status
  5. Fixed guideline status

Visual Parking Aid

The visual parking alert feature displays guidelines on top of the video image to assist the driver with maneuvering a vehicle into a space. Active guidelines are not shown when the steering wheel is straight.

This feature utilizes the 4 parking aid sensor inputs from the PAM and the video camera image. When the transmission selector is in REVERSE and an object is detected in the path of the parking aid sensor, parking aid range to object data is sent from the PAM through the IPM-B to the video camera.

The visual alerts are red, yellow or green and appear as highlights on top of the displayed image to indicate which zone the object is detected. The highlighted visual alerts are still operational if the parking aid system is disabled within the FDIM and the visual alert feature is enabled.

Fixed Guidelines

Note. The color-coded lines cannot indicate accurate or consistent distances between objects located behind the vehicle and at the rear of the vehicle. This normal condition is due to variances in vehicle ride height, including, but not limited to, vehicle loading.

The video camera fixed guidelines feature displays guidelines on top of the video image to assist the driver with alignment of the vehicle. A dashed line on the displayed image represents the center of the vehicle and 3 color-coded lines (red, yellow, green) identify different zones between the rear of the vehicle and objects.

The video camera stores the last known setting for the fixed guidelines when the key is turned off, therefor the rear video camera settings shown in the FDIM when the key is off may not reflect the actual video camera settings. Within 3 seconds of the key being turned on, the APIM requests the last known setting for the fixed guidelines from the video camera, then changes the menu to the settings stored in the video camera. If the guideline selection is changed in the FDIM menu when the key is off, the menu will revert back to the last known setting that is stored by the video camera after the key is turned on.

If a trailer is connected to the vehicle or the liftgate is open, the fixed guidelines are not shown.

Active Guidelines

The video camera active guidelines feature displays guidelines on top of the video image to assist the driver with maneuvering a vehicle into a space. Active guidelines are not shown when the steering wheel is straight.

The video camera stores the last known setting for the active guidelines when the key is turned off, therefor the rear video camera settings shown in the FDIM when the key is off may not reflect the actual video camera settings. Within 3 seconds of the key being turned on, the APIM requests the last known setting for the active guidelines from the video camera, then changes the menu to the settings stored in the video camera. If the guideline selection is changed in the FDIM menu when the key is off, the menu will revert back to the last known setting that is stored by the video camera after the key is turned on.

If a trailer is connected to the vehicle or the liftgate is open, the active guidelines are not shown.

Manual Zoom

The manual zoom feature is controlled by the video camera. The manual zoom feature has 3 zoom levels that are only active when the vehicle is in REVERSE. If the manual zoom feature is enabled and the vehicle is shifted out of REVERSE, the manual zoom feature is disabled. The manual zoom feature must be re-enabled the next time the vehicle is shifted into REVERSE.

When the video camera image is manually zoomed, only the center guideline is shown.

Video Delay

When the video delay is turned on, the video image remains displayed after the transmission is shifted out of REVERSE until the vehicle reaches 10 kmh (6 mph). With the delay off (default), the image displays until the transmission is shifted out of REVERSE.

Video Camera

The rear video camera system is active with the ignition in RUN and the transmission selector in REVERSE. The video signal is hardwired to the APIM, which is directly connected to the FDIM. The video camera receives commands and sends status over a dedicated LIN to the IPM-B. The video camera is configured by the IPM-B and does not require PMI.

Video Display

The video display is the 8 inch FDIM touchscreen.

Image Processing Module B (IPM-B)

The IPM-B serves as the gateway module between the video camera and modules on the MS-CAN. The IPM-B is configurable and requires PMI.

  1. A1 CHECK THE DTCs FROM THE IPM-B AND APIM Using a scan tool, perform IPM-B and APIM self-tests. Are any IPM-B or APIM DTCs retrieved? Yes : For IPM-B DTC B115E:08/APIM DTC C1001:01, GO to A5 . For all other IPM-B DTCs, REFER to the «IPM-B DTC Chart»(ref-569641-S00398840352013082100000) . For all other APIM DTCs, refer to the appropriate INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM for the procedure No : GO to A2.
  2. A2 CHECK AND CLEAN THE REAR VIDEO CAMERA LENS Clean and make sure the rear video camera lens is clear of any debris. Test the video camera system and verify the video camera image. Is the video camera concern still present? Yes : GO to A3. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern was caused by a dirty video camera lens.
  3. A3 CHECK THE REVERSING LAMPS OPERATION Check the operation of the reversing lamps. Do the reversing lamps operate correctly? Yes : GO to A4. No : REFER to «EXTERIOR LIGHTING»(ref-569589) .
  4. A4 CHECK THE FDIM DISPLAY Observe the FDIM while placing the vehicle in REVERSE. Wait 30 seconds. Does the FDIM screen switch to video camera mode and display "Rear Video Camera is Unavailable Please Contact Your Dealership"? Yes : The FDIM display is functional. There is no signal from the video camera. GO to A5. No : Refer to the appropriate INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM for the procedure.
  5. A5 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE VIDEO CAMERA Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Video Camera C4357. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-1 CMP10 (WH) - Ground Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to A7 . No : GO to A6.
  6. A6 CHECK THE IPM-B POWER CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: IPM-B C4402. Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4402-8 CMP10 (WH) C4357-1 10 (WH) Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes : GO to A16 . No : REPAIR the circuit.
  7. A7 CHECK THE VIDEO CAMERA SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: APIM C2383. Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-4 VMP31 (BU) - Ground C4357-3 RMP31 (GN) - Ground Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to A8. No : REPAIR the affected circuit.
  8. A8 CHECK THE VIDEO CAMERA VIDEO SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VIDEO SHIELD Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-4 VMP31 (BU) C4357-6 DMP31 C4357-3 RMP31 (GN) C4357-6 DMP31 Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to A9. No : REPAIR the affected circuit.
  9. A9 CHECK THE VIDEO CAMERA VIDEO SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-4 VMP31 (BU) - Ground C4357-3 RMP31 (GN) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the affected circuit. No : GO to A10.
  10. A10 CHECK VIDEO SIGNAL CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Connect a fused jumper wire between: Lead 1 Lead 2 Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-4 VMP31 (BU) C4357-3 RMP31 (GN) Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C2383-14 VMP31 (BU) C2383-15 RMP31 (GN) Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes : REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to A12 . No : REMOVE the jumper wire. GO to A11.
  11. A11 CHECK VIDEO (+) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-4 VMP31 (BU) C2383-14 VMP31 (BU) Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes : REPAIR circuit RMP31. No : REPAIR circuit VMP31.
  12. A12 CHECK THE LIN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Video Camera C4357. Disconnect: IPM-B C4402. Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-2 VMP35 (WH/BU) C4402-6 VMP35 (WH/BU) Is resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes : GO to A13. No : REPAIR the circuit.
  13. A13 CHECK THE LIN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-2 VMP35 (WH/BU) - Ground Is resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to A14. No : REPAIR the circuit.
  14. A14 CHECK THE LIN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4357-2 VMP35 (WH/BU) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. No : GO to A15.
  15. A15 CHECK FOR CORRECT VIDEO CAMERA OPERATION Disconnect and inspect the video camera connector. Repair: corrosion (install connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - replace terminals/pins pushed-out pins - replace pins as necessary Reconnect the video camera connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new video camera. REFER to «VIDEO CAMERA»(ref-569641-S31124857932013072700000) . No : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  16. A16 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPM-B OPERATION Disconnect and inspect the IPM-B connector. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the IPM-B connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new IPM-B. REFER to «IMAGE PROCESSING MODULE-B (IPM-B)»(ref-569641-S02116762292013072700000) . No : The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

  1. F1 RECHECK FOR DTC U3006:16 Ignition ON. Using a scan tool, clear the DTCs for the module in question. Wait 15 seconds. Using a scan tool, repeat the self-test. Is DTC U3006:16 still present? Yes : GO to F2. No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to a previous low battery voltage condition.
  2. F2 CHECK FOR CHARGING SYSTEM DTCs IN THE PCM Using the scan tool, retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules. Are any voltage-related DTCs set in the PCM? Yes : REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-569601) . No : GO to F3.
  3. F3 CHECK THE BATTERY CONDITION AND STATE OF CHARGE Check the battery condition and verify that the battery is fully charged. Refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) . Is the battery OK and fully charged? Yes : GO to F4. No : REFER to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-569582) .
  4. F4 CHECK THE MODULE VOLTAGE SUPPLY Ignition OFF. Measure the voltage and record the voltage at the battery. Disconnect: IPM-B C4402. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4402-4 CBR99 (BU) - Ground Is the voltage at the suspect module within 0.2 volt of the recorded battery voltage? Yes : GO to F5. No : REPAIR the circuit for high resistance.
  5. F5 CHECK THE MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR CONTINUITY Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C4402-4 CBR99 (BU) C4402-1 GD152 (BK/BU) Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to F6. No : REPAIR the circuit.
  6. F6 CHECK FOR CORRECT IPM-B OPERATION Disconnect and inspect the IPM-B connector. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the IPM-B connector. Make sure it seats and latches correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new IPM-B.
