FLASH PROGRAMMING

Note. The wiTECH diagnostic application is the preferred method for flashing ECUs.

Note. Help using the wiTECH diagnostic application for flashing an ECU is available by selecting "Help" then "Help Contents" at the top of the wiTECH diagnostic application window.

Note. The wiTECH software level must be at the latest release to perform this procedure.

Note. The StarMobile Desktop Client may also be used to perform this flash procedure.

PROGRAMMING IGNITION KEYS TO THE WIN

The secret key is an ID code that is unique to each WIN. This code is programmed and stored in the WIN, the PCM, and each ignition key transponder chip. When the PCM or WIN is replaced, it is necessary to program the Secret Key Code into the new module using a diagnostic scan tool. Follow the programming steps outlined in the diagnostic scan tool for PCM REPLACED , WIN REPLACED , or TIPM REPLACED under MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS for the WIRELESS CONTROL MODULE menu item as appropriate.

Note. Programming the PCM or WIN is done using a diagnostic scan tool and a PIN to enter secure access mode. If three attempts are made to enter secure access mode using an incorrect PIN, secure access mode will be locked out for one hour. To exit this lockout mode, turn the ignition to the RUN position for one hour and then enter the correct PIN. Be certain that all accessories are turned OFF. Also, monitor the battery state and connect a battery charger if necessary.

Each FOBIK has a unique ID code that is assigned at the time the key is manufactured. When a key is programmed into the WIN, the module learns the transponder ID code and the transponder acquires the unique Secret Key ID code from the WIN.

Note. If you are also replacing the PCM and/or WCM/WIN refer to the module/programming order replacement guide before starting. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .

  1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the scan tool.
  3. Have a unique vehicle PIN readily available before running the routine.
  4. Ignition key should be in RUN position.
  5. Select "ECU View".
  6. Select "WIN Wireless Control".
  7. Select "Miscellaneous Functions."
  8. Select "Program Ignition Keys or Key FOBs", Start
  9. Enter the PIN when prompted.
  10. Verify the correct information.
  11. Cycle ignition key after the successful routine completion.

Note. If the original keys do not successfully program to the new WIN after the proper procedures are followed correctly, programming new keys will be necessary.

Note. A maximum of eight keys can be learned by the WIN. Once a key is learned by a WIN, that key has acquired the Secret Key for that WIN and cannot be transferred to any other WIN or vehicle.

Note. Have the vehicle PIN readily available before running the routine

  1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle.
  2. With the wiTECH diagnostic application, perform the following steps
  1. Select "WIRELESS CONTROL MODULE (WCM)"
  2. Select the "MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS" tab
  3. Highlight "PROGRAMMING IGNITION KEYS OR KEY FOBS"
  4. Select "NEXT"
  5. Enter the PIN when prompted.
  6. Select "NEXT"
  7. Verify that the PIN number is correct
  8. Once verified select "NEXT"
  9. Note On-Screen instructions and select the "FINISH" button
  10. Cycle ignition key twice after the successful routine completion.

Note. If the original keys do not successfully program to the new WCM after the proper procedures are followed correctly, programming new keys will be necessary.

  9. Enter the PIN when prompted.
  10. Verify the correct information.
  11. Cycle ignition key after the successful routine completion.

  1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle.
  2. Connect the scan tool. NOTE: Have a unique vehicle PIN readily available before running the routine CAUTION: If the PCM and WIN are replaced at the same time, the PCM MUST be programmed before the WIN.
  3. Select "ECU View."
  4. Select "WIN".
  5. Select "Miscellaneous Functions."
  6. Select "WIN Replaced".
  7. Enter the PIN when prompted.
  8. Cycle ignition key after the successful routine completion.

Note. If the PCM and the WIN are replaced at the same time, all vehicle keys will need to be replaced and programmed to the new WIN.

CAUTIONRead all notes and cautions for programming procedures.

Note. Have the vehicle PIN readily available to enter whenever prompted before running the routine.

CAUTIONIf the PCM and WCM are replaced at the same time, the PCM MUST be programmed before the WCM.
  1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle.
  2. With the wiTECH diagnostic application, perform the following steps
  1. Select "WIRELESS CONTROL MODULE (WCM)"
  2. Select the "MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS" tab
  3. Highlight "WCM REPLACED"
  4. Select the "Start Misc Function" button
  5. Select "NEXT"
  6. Enter the PIN when prompted.
  7. Select "NEXT"
  8. Verify that the PIN number is correct
  9. Once verified select "NEXT"
  10. Select "NEXT"
  11. Note On-Screen instructions and select the "FINISH" button
  12. Cycle ignition key twice after the successful routine completion.

RESTORE VEHICLE CONFIGURATION

Note. The technician should have cut the KEY FOBIK Blanks using the original vehicle's Key FOBIK as a template. Please make sure the KEY FOBIK Blanks have been cut prior to programming. If this step has not been performed, please perform at this time.

CAUTIONRead all notes and cautions for programming procedures.

Note. Prior to programming, have the vehicle PIN readily available before running the routine. If necessary, obtain the four digit PIN from the dealership's parts department.

CAUTIONIf the PCM and WCM are replaced at the same time, the PCM MUST be programmed before the WCM.
  1. When prompted, enter the four digit pin number obtained from the dealership parts department.
  2. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle.
  3. With the wiTECH diagnostic application, perform the following steps form the Initial Start Up Screen
  1. Select the "DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES" tab
  2. Highlight "RESTORE VEHICLE CONFIGURATION"
  3. Select the "Run Diagnostic" button
  4. Select "CONTINUE"
  5. Verify that the vehicle VIN number is correct
  6. Once verified, select the "Correct VIN" button
  7. Note On-Screen instructions and select the "Close" button

UPDATE PRESSURE THRESHOLDS

Note. The wiTECH software level must be at the latest release to perform this procedure.

Note. The vehicle must be driven before the TPMS light will turn off.

CAUTIONRead all notes and cautions for programming procedures.

Note. Have the vehicle PIN readily available before running the routine

  1. Connect a battery charger to the vehicle.
  2. With the wiTECH diagnostic application, perform the following steps
  1. Select "WIRELESS CONTROL MODULE (WCM)"
  2. Select the "MISCELLANEOUS FUNCTIONS" tab
  3. Highlight and select "UPDATE PRESSURE THRESHOLDS"
  4. Note On-Screen instructions and select the "NEXT" button
  5. Verify current settings, select the "NEXT" button to change settings
  6. Select "NEXT"
  7. Enter the PIN when prompted.
  8. Select "NEXT"
  9. Verify that the PIN number is correct
  10. Once verified, select "NEXT"
  11. Select "NEXT"
  12. Wait for the WCM to update it's configuration
  13. Once the WCM configuration is complete, select "NEXT"
  14. Note On-Screen instructions and select the "FINISH" button

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is a digital computer containing a microprocessor. The PCM receives input signals from various switches and sensors referred to as Powertrain Control Module Inputs. These inputs are as follows

  1. Air Conditioning Pressure Transducer
  2. ASD/Main Relay
  3. Battery Voltage
  4. Brake Switch
  5. Camshaft Position Sensor
  6. Crankshaft Position Sensor
  7. Distance Sensor (from transmission control module)
  8. EGR Position Feedback (if equipped)
  9. Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
  10. Heated Oxygen Sensors
  11. Ignition sense
  12. Inlet Air Temperature Sensor
  13. Knock Sensor
  14. Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor
  15. Park/Neutral (from trans range sensor)
  16. Power Steering Pressure Switch
  17. Proportional Purge Sense
  18. CAN C Bus
  19. Speed Control
  20. Transmission Control Relay (Switched B+)
  21. Transmission Pressure Switches
  22. Transmission Temperature Sensor
  23. Transmission Input Shaft Speed Sensor
  24. Transmission Output Shaft Speed Sensor
  25. Vehicle Speed

Based on the above inputs, the PCM adjusts various engine and vehicle operations through devices referred to as Powertrain Control Module Outputs. These outputs are as follows

  1. Air Conditioning Clutch Relay
  2. Data Link Connector (CAN C Bus)
  3. Double Start Override
  4. EGR Solenoid (if equipped)
  5. Fuel Injectors
  6. Generator Field
  7. High Speed Fan Relay
  8. Ignition Coils
  9. Natural Vacuum Leak Detection
  10. Low Speed Fan Relay
  11. MTV Actuator
  12. Proportional Purge Solenoid
  13. SRV Valve
  14. Speed Control Relay
  15. Speed Control Vent Relay
  16. Speed Control Vacuum Relay
  17. Torque Reduction Request
  18. Transmission Control Relay
  19. Transmission Solenoids
  20. 5 Volt Output

Based on inputs it receives, the PCM adjusts fuel injector pulse width, idle speed, ignition timing, and canister purge operation and EGR, if equipped. The PCM regulates the cooling fans, air conditioning and speed control systems. The PCM changes generator charge rate by adjusting the generator field.

The PCM adjusts injector pulse width (air-fuel ratio) based on the following inputs.

  1. Manifold Absolute Pressure
  2. Engine Speed (crankshaft position sensor)
  3. Battery Voltage
  4. Inlet Air Temperature Sensor
  5. Engine Coolant Temperature
  6. Exhaust Gas Oxygen Content (heated oxygen sensors)
  7. Throttle Position

The PCM adjusts engine idle speed through the idle air control motor based on the following inputs.

  1. Brake Switch
  2. Engine Coolant Temperature
  3. Engine Speed (crankshaft position sensor)
  4. Park/Neutral
  5. Transaxle Gear Engagement
  6. Throttle Position
  7. Vehicle Speed (from Transmission Control Module)

The PCM adjusts ignition timing based on the following inputs.

  1. Inlet Air Temperature
  2. Engine Coolant Temperature
  3. Engine Speed (crankshaft position sensor)
  4. Knock Sensor
  5. Manifold Absolute Pressure
  6. Park/Neutral (from trans range sensor)
  7. Transaxle Gear Engagement
  8. Throttle Position

The camshaft and crankshaft signals are sent to the PCM. If the PCM does not receive both signals within approximately one second of engine cranking, it deactivates the fuel pump. When deactivated, power is shut off to the fuel injectors, ignition coils, fuel pump and the heating element in each oxygen sensor.

The PCM contains a voltage converter that changes battery voltage to a regulated 5.0 volts. The 5.0 volts power the camshaft position sensor, and crankshaft position sensor. The PCM also provides a regulated 5.0 volts supply for the, manifold absolute pressure sensor, throttle position sensor and EGR (if equipped).

The PCM engine control strategy prevents reduced idle speeds until after the engine operates for 320 km (200 miles). If the PCM is replaced after 320 km (200 miles) of usage, update the mileage in new PCM. PCM/ECM Reprogramming. Refer to the appropriate Electrical Diagnostic article. .

SENSOR RETURN - PCM INPUT

The sensor return circuit provides a low electrical noise ground reference for all of the systems sensors. The sensor return circuit connects to internal ground circuits within the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

PCM GROUND

Ground is provided through multiple pins of the PCM connector. Depending on the vehicle there may be as many as two different ground pins. There are power grounds and sensor grounds.

The power grounds are used to control the ground side relays, solenoids, ignition coil or injectors. The signal ground is used for any input that uses sensor return for ground, and the ground side of any internal processing component.

The PCM case is shielded to prevent RFI and EMI. The PCM case is grounded and must be firmly attached to a good, clean body ground.

Internally all grounds are connected together, however there is noise suppression on the sensor ground. For EMI and RFI protection the housing and cover are also grounded separately from the ground pins.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - PCM/ECM REPROGRAMMING - GAS

Perform the PCM/TCM PROGRAMMING procedure. Refer to the appropriate Electrical Diagnostic article. .

BULB CHECK

Key on: Bulb illuminated until vehicle starts, as long as all once per trip (readiness) monitors completed. If monitors have not been completed, then: Key on: bulb check for about 5 to 8 seconds, lamp then flashes if once per trip (readiness) monitors have not been completed until vehicle is started, then MIL is extinguished.

PINION FACTOR SETTING

Note. This procedure must be performed if the PCM has been replaced with a NEW or replacement unit. Failure to perform this procedure will result in an inoperative or improperly calibrated speedometer.

The vehicle speed readings for the speedometer are taken from the output speed sensor. The PCM must be calibrated to the different combinations of equipment (final drive and tires) available. Pinion Factor allows the technician to set the Powertrain Control Module initial setting so that the speedometer readings will be correct. To properly read and/or reset the Pinion Factor, it is necessary to use a scan tool.

  1. Plug the scan tool into the diagnostic connector located under the instrument panel.
  2. Select the Transmission menu.
  3. Select the Miscellaneous menu.
  4. Select Pinion Factor. Then follow the instructions on the scan tool screen.

QUICK LEARN PROCEDURE

The quick learn procedure requires the use of the scan tool. This program allows the electronic transaxle system to recalibrate itself. This will provide the best possible transaxle operation.

Note. The quick learn procedure should be performed if any of the following procedures are performed

  1. Transaxle Assembly Replacement
  2. Powertrain Control Module Replacement
  3. Solenoid/Pressure Switch Assembly Replacement
  4. Clutch Plate and/or Seal Replacement
  5. Valve Body Replacement or Recondition

To perform the Quick Learn Procedure, the following conditions must be met

  1. The brakes must be applied
  2. The engine speed must be above 500 rpm
  3. The throttle angle (TPS) must be less than 3 degrees
  4. The shift lever position must stay until prompted to shift to overdrive
  5. The shift lever position must stay in overdrive after the Shift to Overdrive prompt until the scan tool indicates the procedure is complete
  6. The calculated oil temperature must be above 15.5° C (60° F) and below 93° C (200° F)
  1. Plug the scan tool into the diagnostic connector. The connector is located under the instrument panel.
  2. Go to the Transmission screen.
  3. Go to the Miscellaneous screen.
  4. Select Quick Learn Procedure. Follow the instructions of the scan tool to perform the Quick Learn Procedure.

  1. Remove the engine cover (1).
  2. Disconnect and remove the battery. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-485500-S22686532632012071300000) .
  3. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) electrical connectors (1 and 2).
  4. Disengage two starter wire harness retainers (6) from the battery tray (3).
  5. Disengage two engine wire harness retainers (4) from the battery tray (3).
  6. Disengage the engine wire harness connector (2) from the battery tray (3) and reposition the wire harness.
  7. Remove the nut (5) and two bolts (1).
  8. Open the two wire harness retainers (3) and reposition the wire harness.
  9. Remove the battery tray with the PCM (2) attached.
  10. Remove the four nuts (1) with ground strap (4) and remove the PCM (2) from the battery tray.
