- Remove engine. See «ENGINE»(ref-98439-S36577488752001052300000). Align timing marks. Remove intake manifold, camshaft covers, harmonic balancer, front cover, and oil pump. See «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-98439-S28029611512001052300000), «CAMSHAFT COVER»(ref-98439-S26301935712001052300000), «HARMONIC BALANCER»(ref-98439-S37472193092001052300000) and «FRONT COVER»(ref-98439-S01463109652001052300000). See «OIL PUMP»(ref-98439-S30133539022001052300000) under ENGINE OILING.
- Remove timing chain tensioner from cylinder head being removed. See «TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER»(ref-98439-S16860205982001052300000). Remove camshaft sprockets from cylinder head being removed (timing chain remains in chain case). Remove timing chain guides (to access retaining screws, remove plugs at front of cylinder head).
- Remove water crossover. Remove exhaust manifold. See «EXHAUST MANIFOLD»(ref-98439-S27230935292001052300000). Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse order of tightening sequence. (Scheme 1) Discard cylinder head bolts. DO NOT reuse head bolts. Remove cylinder head and gasket.
Installation
Clean bolt holes and surface of cylinder block. Set cylinder head onto cylinder block, using a NEW gasket. Install and tighten NEW cylinder head bolts to specification in sequence. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. (Scheme 1) To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Set cam timing. See CAMSHAFT.
Scheme 1
Remove serpentine belt. Remove bolt securing power steering hose (if necessary). Remove harmonic balancer. See HARMONIC BALANCER . Remove serpentine belt tensioner and idler pulley. Remove front cover and gasket (gasket is reusable. DO NOT discard unless damaged).
Clean gasket surfaces. Apply a small amount of RTV sealer at split line between upper and lower crankcases. Install front cover. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
Crankshaft front oil seal is not serviced as an individual component. When replacing crankshaft front oil seal install a NEW engine front cover. In order to precisely align crankshaft front oil seal to crankshaft balancer and crankshaft dust shield, engine front cover and crankshaft front oil seal are sold as an assembly.
Note. This procedure applies to both secondary chains.
- Rotate crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(ref-98439-S01463109652001052300000) . Remove camshaft cover. See «CAMSHAFT COVER»(ref-98439-S26301935712001052300000) . Remove bolts and secondary timing chain tensioner. Remove camshaft position sensor.
- To access upper chain guide bolts, remove plastic plugs from holes in cylinder head. Remove bolts and upper chain guide. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts and sprockets. Remove secondary drive chain.
Set camshaft timing. See CAMSHAFT . Install front cover. See FRONT COVER . Install camshaft cover(s). See CAMSHAFT COVER .
