To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
Removal
| CAUTION | If sprocket/chain relationship is not maintained throughout this procedure, camshaft timing will be lost, requiring further engine disassembly to set camshaft timing. |
- Rotate crankshaft until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC of compression stroke. Remove camshaft cover(s). See «CAMSHAFT COVER»(ref-98439-S26301935712001052300000).
- Install Camshaft Holder (J-44212) over camshafts. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Install Secondary Drive Timing Chain/Sprocket Holding Fixture (J-44213) onto front rail of cylinder head. (Scheme 4) Remove secondary camshaft drive chain guide upper bolt access plug.
- Loosen secondary camshaft drive chain guide upper bolt 2 full turns. Slide intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets onto pins of Secondary Drive Timing Chain/Sprocket Holding Fixture (J-44213).
- Alternately loosen camshaft bearing cap screws a few turns at a time until all valve spring pressure has been released. Remove bolts and caps. Remove Camshaft Holder (J-44212). Remove camshafts and camshaft followers.

Inspection
Visually check lobes whenever a camshaft is removed. Excessive wear, scoring or flaking of lifter usually denotes camshaft lobe wear. Excessive camshaft lobe wear is evidenced by grooves, scoring or flaking. If any of these conditions exist, replace camshaft. Ensure bearing journals are not scored or burned.
- Apply a liberal amount of Lubricant (12345001) to roller pivot pocket and valve slot areas of camshaft followers. Place camshaft followers in position on valve tip and stationary hydraulic lash adjusters. Rounded head of followers goes on SHLA, while flat end goes on valve tip. Apply a liberal amount of same lubricant to camshaft carriers, lobes, and journals.
- Place camshaft in camshaft carriers with camshaft sprocket drive pins near top of their rotation and camshaft lobes in a neutral position. Observe markings on camshaft bearings caps. Apply a liberal amount of lubrication to camshaft bearing caps. Install bearing caps according to identification marks. (Scheme 5)
- Alternately tighten bearing cap bolts a few turns at a time until all bolts are snug. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-98439-S38345349612001052300000).
- Use hex cast into camshaft to adjust camshafts until drive pins are in position to engage camshaft sprockets over camshafts, and then start retaining bolts. (Scheme 6) Work sprockets over camshaft, and tighten retaining bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-98439-S38345349612001052300000). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
