ATF FLUSH
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Vehicle Tester
Procedure
With normal ATF change, only about 55 to 60% of total ATF in transmission is replaced.
The "ATF flush" is necessary when old ATF in the transmission must be removed completely.
The ATF must always be flushed for the following work
- Replacing the input shaft
- Maintenance work on the input shaft
As described in the following, the test run must be executed twice and then the respective ATF must be changed.
This is the only way the ATF in the transmission can be changed completely.
The following describes flushing the ATF in 7 steps.
| CAUTION | There is a risk of damaging the transmission. Perform all the work exactly as described. |
After installing the transmission: Fill the ATF, refer to ATF, FILLING FOR ATF FLUSH .
Flush ATF
ATF level, checking and correcting, refer to Diagnosis and Testing .
Note. Observe all notes and test requirements for "Checking ATF level and filling".
The ATF flush is completed after the ATF level is checked.
ATF, DRAINING FOR ATF FLUSH
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Hook 3438
- Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782
- Protective goggles
Procedure
| CAUTION | There is a risk of damaging the transmission. Do not start the engine if there is only a little or no ATF in the transmission. |
Scheme 190
- The engine is off.
- Move the vehicle onto a 4-column shop hoist or over a work pit so it is completely level.
- The selector level is in "P".
- The electro-mechanical parking brake is set.
- Depending on the version, ATF inspection plugs of different lengths -A- are installed. The ATF check plug must be replaced after the ATF level test. To prevent damaging the transmission, compare the old and new ATF inspection plug.
Remove the rear noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .
Scheme 191
Place the V.A.G 1782 under the transmission.
| WARNING | Danger of eye injury. Wear protective goggles. |
Remove the ATF check plug -A-.
Drain the ATF.
Note. Follow all disposal regulations! Depending on the version, different ATF inspection plugs and different oil level tubes are installed.
Transmission with a Long, Bent Oil Level Tube
Pull the oil level tube -A- out of the ATF check hole using the 3438 and let the remaining ATF drain out.
Scheme 192
Push the ATF level tube -A- into the ATF check hole -B- by hand.
Scheme 193
- Installed position: the large tab -1- on the ATF level tube must face the recess -2- on the ATF check hole.
Note. The ATF level tube -A- must be replaced after the second attempt.
Transmission with a Short, Straight ATF Level Tube
Pull the oil level tube -A- out of the ATF check hole using the 3438 and let the remaining ATF drain out.
Scheme 194
Scheme 195
- The O-ring -1- must fit correctly inside the groove in the oil level tube.
Push the ATF level tube -A- carefully and straight into the ATF check hole -B- by hand.
Note. The O-ring on the oil level tube -A- seals the oil level height tube -C-. Only this way can the ATF level be correctly adjusted. The ATF level tube -A- must be replaced after the second attempt. Ignore 3438
Continue ATF flushing Flush ATF
ATF, FILLING FOR ATF FLUSH
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782
- ATF Filler System F/CVT Transmission VAS 5162
Preparing
- Drain the ATF
| CAUTION | There is a risk of damaging the transmission. Use replacement ATF for the "0AW Transmission" only. Other types of non-approved ATFs and oils can cause malfunctions in the transmission or the transmission could stop working all together. The ATF filler tool must be clean and the ATF must not be mixed with any other ATF. |
Note. The illustration on the reservoir for VAS 5162 in the upper left graphic, refers to the use of special ATF for CVT transmissions. In addition, the necessary work steps for filling are illustrated, which are described as follows
Procedure
Fill the VAS 5162 with the ATF for the "CVT 0AW Transmission".
Secure the filled container to the vehicle as high as possible.
Scheme 196
- The shut-off valve on the VAS 5162 must be closed.
| CAUTION | There is a risk of damaging the transmission. Do not start the engine if there is only a little or no ATF in the transmission. In this case, a preliminary filling with 5.5 to 6 liters ATF must be performed. |
Remove the O-ring -1- on the connection -2- on the VAS 5162.
Scheme 197
| CAUTION | Danger of misfilling the transmission. The connection -2- must be mounted by hand all the way into the inspection plug hole on the transmission without the O-ring. The oil level tube can be pushed into the ATF inspection plug hole in the upper position only when the O-ring is not on the connection -2-. This is the only way to correctly check and/or adjust the ATF level to the maximum. |
Install the VAS 5162 connection, without the O-ring, all the way into the ATF check hole hand-tight.
Note. By doing so, the oil level tube is pushed into the correct installation position.
Turn the valve to the filler hose -lower arrow-. The ATF flows into the transmission.
Scheme 198
Fill at least 5.5 to 6 liters ATF into transmission.
Move the selector lever into "P".
| CAUTION | Immediately after starting the engine, let it run at 2, 500 RPM. Running the engine at high speeds is necessary so that the ATF pump is bled after a transmission repair. If this is not done, the pump could get damaged because it was briefly operated without any ATF. |
Start the engine.
Using the accelerator pedal, let the engine run briefly at 2, 500 RPM.
Press the brake pedal and hold it down.
Shift through all selector lever positions "P, R, N, D, S" and let each position remain shifted at idle for approximately 2 seconds.
Selector lever in "P" and let engine continue to run at idle.
Thread connection on shut-off valve of the VAS 5162 from ATF inspection plug opening.
Let any excess ATF drain out.
Tighten the old ATF check plug.
- Tightening specifications: 30 Nm.
Continue ATF flushing Flush ATF .
Check the ATF level after the second flushing and fill if necessary. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing .
Note. Observe all notes and test requirements for "Checking ATF level and filling".

Note. If applicable, press the brake pedal
Press the brake pedal and brake the wheels to 0 km/h.
Place selector lever in position "R".
Press the accelerator pedal and speed up to 20 km/h.
Press the brake pedal and brake the wheels to 0 km/h.
Switch the selector lever back to the position "D" and repeat the entire process five times.
Note. Repeat the entire cycle five time so that all the old ATF will get mixed with the new ATF.
Switch the selector lever to the position "P" and turn off the engine.
Continue ATF flushing Flush ATF
| CAUTION | There is a risk of damaging the transmission. Filling the ATF during the ATF flushing procedure does not replace the ATF level test. Check the ATF level and after flushing and adjust it if necessary. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing . |
