CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Always clean the connection locations and the area around them before loosening.
  2. Clean the transmission and transmission components using cleaning solution -D 009 401 04-.
  3. Use lint-free cloths when cleaning, for example, the "WYPALL X70/WORKHORSE" cloth made by Kimberly-Clark Professional.
  4. Seal all open lines and connections immediately with clean plugs or caps from the engine bung set VAS 6122.
  5. Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover them. Use foil or lint-free cloths.
  6. Carefully cover or plug unpacked components if repairs cannot be performed immediately.
  7. Only install clean components: Remove the replacement parts from their packaging just prior to installing them.
  8. Protect the disconnected connectors from dirt and moisture and only connect when they are dry.

CONTACT CORROSION

General

  1. Contact corrosion can occur if non-approved fasteners are used on vehicle (bolts, nuts, washers, etc.).
  2. For this reason, only connecting elements with a special surface coating are installed.
  3. In addition, rubber or plastic parts and adhesive are made of materials that do not conduct electricity.
  4. If you are not sure about the suitability of parts, install new parts.

Note. We recommend using original replacement parts only. They have been inspected and are compatible with magnesium. It is recommended to use Audi accessories. Damage resulting from contact corrosion is not covered by the warranty.

REPAIR INFORMATION

Carefulness, cleanliness and the correct tools are required for transmission repairs to be successful. The usual basic safety precautions also, naturally apply when carrying out vehicle repairs.

A number of generally applicable instructions for individual repair operations, which are otherwise mentioned at various points in the Repair information, are summarized here. They apply to this repair information.

Transmission

  1. Clean working conditions for the transmission, refer to «CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#general-technical-data-continuously-variable-transmission-internal-components-0aw-sedan__clean-working-conditions) .
  2. Clean the ATF pipes and ATF cooler after repairing the transmission. Refer to «General Information»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#controls-housing-continuously-variable-transmission-0aw-sedan) .
  3. Reusable components must be cleaned, checked and reconditioned if necessary before installation. Refer to «INPUT SHAFT, CHECKING FOR WEAR»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/axle-shafts/#final-drive-differential-continuously-variable-transmission-internal-components-0aw-sedan) .

When installing the transmission, the following fluid levels should be checked and corrected if necessary

  1. ATF level, refer to «Diagnosis and Testing»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#controls-housing-continuously-variable-transmission-0aw-sedan) .
  2. Gear oil in the front final drive, refer to «General Information»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/axle-shafts/#final-drive-differential-continuously-variable-transmission-0aw-sedan) .
  3. Capacities, refer to «Specifications»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#general-technical-data-continuously-variable-transmission-0aw-sedan) .
  4. Specifications

O-rings, Gaskets, Seals

  1. O-rings, gaskets and seals must be replaced.
  2. After removing gaskets, examine contact surface on housing/shaft for burrs resulting from removal or for other signs of damage.
  3. The open side of the seals point toward the fluid to be sealed in.
  4. To install, thinly coat gaskets along outer circumference and on sealing lip with ATF.
  5. Coat O-rings with transmission fluid or Vaseline before inserting to prevent crushing rings during installation.
  6. Always only use approved ATF or Vaseline. Other types of lubrication cause faults to occur in the transmission hydraulics.
  7. When installing the new shaft seals, make sure the sealing lip does not run on the same point as the sealing lip of the old seal (use insertion depth tolerances).
  8. Replace paper gaskets, thoroughly clean sealing surfaces and completely remove old seals.

Bolts and Nuts

  1. Loosen the bolts opposite the tightening sequence.
  2. Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be loosened and tightened crosswise in stages if no tightening sequence is specified.
  3. The tightening specifications stated apply to non-oiled nuts and bolts.
  4. Always replace self-locking nuts and bolts.

Fasteners

Scheme 1

Scheme 1
  1. Do not overstretch the circlips.
  2. Always replace damaged or stretched circlips.
  3. The circlips must fit completely inside the groove.
  4. Replace the adapter sleeves. Installed position: Slit is longitudinal to direction of force.

Bearings

  1. Coat bearing with ATF before inserting.
  2. Only use Vaseline for the bearing and shim. Other types of lubrication lead to faults in the transmission hydraulics.

Adjusting Shims

  1. Measure the adjusting shims at several locations with a micrometer. Different shim thicknesses make it possible to select the required thickness precisely; install two shims if necessary.
  2. Check for burrs and damage. Only install perfect shims.

FREQUENT DAMAGE

Note. Check the transmission control module -J217- Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory using vehicle diagnosis tester before starting Guided Fault Finding. Additionally, check the event memory of the engine control device because errors from the engine control device can lead to transmission malfunction. Check the ATF level before starting Guided Fault Finding. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing . Use "Guided Fault Finding" on the vehicle diagnosis tester.
