SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Observe the following to avoid personal injury and vehicle damage

WARNINGThere is a risk of injury and accident from accidentally engaging a gear when the engine is running. Before work is done with the engine running, move the selector lever into P and press the parking brake button to engage the electromechanical parking brake.

To prevent personal injury and damage or destruction of electrical and electronic components, observe the following

  1. Connect and disconnect test equipment only when the ignition is turned off.
CAUTIONRisk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting the battery. Observe measures for disconnecting battery. Only disconnect the battery with ignition switched off.

Connect the battery. Refer to Removal and Installation .

If testing equipment must be used during a road test, observe the following

WARNINGDistraction and testing equipment that is not secured properly can cause accidents. The passenger airbag could pose a risk if it deploys in a collision. Operating testing equipment while driving causes it to shift position. There is an increased risk of injury due to unsecured testing equipment. Always secure testing equipment on the rear seat using a strap and have a second person in the rear seat operate it.

CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Always clean the connection locations and the area around them before loosening.
  2. Clean the transmission and transmission components using cleaning solution -D 009 401 04-.
  3. Use lint-free cloths when cleaning. Audi recommends the WYPALL X70/WORKHORSE cloth made by Kimberly-Clark Professional.
  4. Seal all open lines and connections immediately with clean plugs or caps from the engine plug set VAS 6122.
  5. Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover them. Use foil or lint-free cloths.
  6. Carefully cover or plug unpacked components if repairs cannot be performed immediately.
  7. Only install clean components: Remove the replacement parts from their packaging just prior to installing them.

  2. 2- Parts list number
  3. 3- Manufacturer transmission code: 6HP-28
  4. 4- Transmission code example: KRL

Note. The transmission code letters are also included on the vehicle data labels.

Transmission

  1. The 6-speed automatic transmission 0B6 AWD is equipped with 6 hydraulically activated forward gears. When the torque converter lock-up clutch is closed, these forward gears become manually driven gears through bypassing the torque converter slip.
  2. A special feature of the 0B6 transmission is the position of the front final drive (front axle differential with flange shafts) in front of the torque converter. An even distribution of the weight between the front and rear axles is attained.

Torque Converter

The torque converter is equipped with a slip-controlled torque converter lock-up clutch. Due to the new design of this transmission, the torque converter is located behind the front final drive.

Mechatronic

The Mechatronic combines the following components as a complete synchronized unit

  1. The hydraulic control, the transmission control module -J217
  2. The multi-function transmission range switch -F125
  3. The sensors and actuators

The Mechatronic unit is installed in the transmission in the area of the oil pan.

Transmission Control Module -J217

The control module is a part of the Mechatronic unit in the transmission.

Determining the driving situation and driving resistance dependent shift point occurs automatically.

Advantages

  1. Usage-based shifting
  2. Maximum engine output is always available
  3. Individual adaptation of shift points in all driving situations
  4. Gear shift points are infinitely variable

On Board Diagnostics

Use guided fault finding to determine the exact cause of damage before servicing the automatic transmission.

Use

Shift Point Changes on Inclines and Declines

When driving on inclines or declines, gears are automatically selected using additional shift characteristic maps. The selection is based on accelerator pedal position and vehicle speed.

  1. The gear change map for extreme uphill stretches is matched to engine output
  2. The gear change map for extreme downhill stretches is matched to the braking effect of the engine.
  3. By selecting a gear directly using tiptronic, the driver can use the engine braking effect with a specific gear engaged, for example when driving downhill with a trailer.

TOWING

CAUTIONThere is a risk of destroying the transmission. When towing the vehicle, the selector lever must be in the N position and the vehicle must not be towed more than 50 km and not at speeds exceeding 50 km/h.

Note. Tow-starting the engine, for example when the battery is too weak or the starter is defective, is not possible.

REPAIR INFORMATION

The maximum possible care and cleanliness and proper tools are essential to ensure satisfactory and successful transmission repairs. The usual basic safety precautions also, apply when carrying out vehicle repairs.

Some general repair information that applies to several procedures throughout this information is summarized here. They apply to this repair information.

Guided Fault Finding, Vehicle Diagnosis and Test Instruments

Scheme 231

Scheme 231: REPAIR INFORMATION
  1. Determine the cause of the malfunction as accurately as possible using guided fault finding, on board diagnostics and test instruments before starting any repairs on the transmission

Oil, Environmental and Disposal Regulations

  1. Handle ATF, axle oil and other fluids with care.
  2. Dispose of drained ATF properly.
  3. Follow the legal environmental and disposal regulations.
  4. Follow the information provided on oil packaging.

Special Tools and Equipment

For a complete list of special tools used, refer to Service Net under Special Tools.

Transmission

  1. Clean working conditions for the transmission «CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#general-technical-data-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-sedan__clean-working-conditions) .
  2. Do not run the engine or tow the vehicle when the center differential housing is removed or when there is no ATF.
  3. After installing, the following fluid levels must be checked and topped off if necessary: ATF in transmission «ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#controls-housing-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-sedan__atf-checking-level-and-correcting) and gear oil in transmission «GEAR OIL IN FRONT FINAL DRIVE, FILLING AFTER REPAIR»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/axle-shafts/#final-drive-differential-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-sedan__gear-oil-in-front-final-drive) . Capacities and specifications, refer to «TRANSMISSION FLUID CAPACITIES»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#general-technical-data-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-sedan__transmission-fluid-capacities) .

O-rings, Shaft Seals, Seals

  1. O-rings, shaft seals and seals must be replaced.
  2. After removing gaskets, examine contact surface on housing/shaft for burr resulting from removal or for other signs of damage.
  3. Thoroughly clean housing joint surfaces before assembling.
  4. To install, thinly coat shaft seals along outer circumference and on sealing lip with ATF.
  5. Coat O-rings with ATF before inserting to prevent crushing rings during installation.
  6. Always only use approved ATF. Other types of lubrication cause faults to occur in the transmission hydraulics.
  7. The open side of the shaft seals point toward the fluid to be sealed in.
  8. Press in new shaft seal, so that the sealing lip does not run on the same point as the sealing lip of the old shaft seal (use insertion depth tolerances).
  9. After installing, the following fluid levels must be checked and topped off if necessary: ATF in transmission, refer to «ATF, CHECKING LEVEL AND CORRECTING»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/automatic-trans/#controls-housing-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-sedan__atf-checking-level-and-correcting) or gear oil in transmission «GEAR OIL IN FRONT FINAL DRIVE, FILLING AFTER REPAIR»(/audi/a4/b8-2007-2012/remont/axle-shafts/#final-drive-differential-automatic-transmission-0b6-awd-sedan__gear-oil-in-front-final-drive) . Bolts and Nuts

  1. Loosen the bolts opposite the tightening sequence.
  2. Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be tightened in steps according to the specified tightening sequence and method.
  3. Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be loosened and tightened crosswise in stages if no tightening sequence is specified.
  4. Replace the self-locking nuts and bolts.
  5. Clean threads of bolts that were applied with locking fluid using a wire brush. Install the bolts with locking fluid AMV 185 101 A1.
  6. Threaded holes into which self-locking bolts or bolts coated with locking fluid are screwed, must be cleaned (for example tap). Otherwise there is a risk that the bolts will shear the next time they are removed.
  7. The tightening specifications stated apply to non-oiled nuts and bolts.

Fasteners

  1. Do not overstretch the circlips.
  2. Replace damaged or stretched circlips.
  3. The circlips must fit completely inside the groove.

Bearings

  1. Install needle bearings with lettered side (thicker metal) racing the fitting tool.
  2. Insert bearing with axle oil or ATF, depending on installation location.
  3. Do not interchange the outer or inner races of bearings of the same size.
  4. Always replace the tapered roller bearings on one shaft together and use new bearings from a single manufacturer.

Adjusting Shims

  1. Measure the adjusting shims at several locations with a mircometer. Tolerance variations make it possible to find the exact shim thickness required.
  2. Check for burrs and damage. Only install perfect shims.

CONTACT CORROSION

Contact corrosion can occur if non-approved fasteners are used such as bolts, nuts, washers, etc.

For this reason, only connecting elements with a special surface coating are installed.

In addition, rubber or plastic parts and adhesive are made of materials that do not conduct electricity.

If you are not sure about the suitability of parts, install new parts.

Note. Original replacement parts are recommended because they have been tested. It is recommended to use Audi accessories. Damage resulting from contact corrosion is not covered by the warranty.
