CHECKING THE WIRING AND CONNECTIONS

Check the wires between steering wheel angle sensor (SAS) control unit #13 (#A37) and steering wheel control unit (SWM) #11 (#A11) for an open circuit as described in, see OPEN-CIRCUIT, INTERMITTENT FAULTS , and for an intermittent short circuit to ground as described in SHORT-CIRCUIT TO GROUND, INTERMITTENT FAULTS .

CHECKING WIRING AND SENSORS

  1. Disconnect the cable harness between the steering wheel angle sensor module (SAS) and the steering wheel module (SWM)
  2. Connect the breakout box. Check the wiring between the steering wheel angle sensor module (SAS) terminal #14 (#A38) and steering wheel module (SWM) terminal #18 (#A18). Check for an open-circuit. See «OPEN-CIRCUIT, PERMANENT FAULTS»(ref-494744-S18857066992012081600000) . Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage. See «SHORT-CIRCUIT TO SUPPLY VOLTAGE. PERMANENT FAULTS»(ref-494744-S38605125602012081600000) . HINT: With the ignition on and the breakout box connected to the steering wheel module (SWM), check the supply voltage to the steering wheel angle sensor control module: The voltage should be 12 V. Try replacing the steering wheel angle sensor if no faults are found in the wiring between the control module for the steering wheel angle sensor and the steering wheel angle sensor.
