CHECK THE CONTROL MODULE FOR THE STEERING WHEEL ANGLE SENSOR
- Ignition off
- Disconnect the connector for the steering wheel module (SWM)
- Wait 150 seconds
- Connect the connector to the steering wheel module (SWM)
- Ignition on
- Read off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for the control module for the steering wheel angle sensor. The EEPROM in the control module stores diagnostic trouble codes (DTC), diagnostic trouble code (DTC) counters and frozen values. If the memory circuit is malfunctioning, no information can be read from the control module. Simulate a fault to check the condition of the memory. This stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). The memory can then be checked by reading off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information. NOTE: A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored in the steering wheel module (SWM) when the module is disconnected. Therefore any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the system for the steering wheel module (SWM) must be erased. Other information: To disconnect and connect the connector for the steering wheel module (SWM), see «STEERING WHEEL MODULE (SWM), REPLACING»(ref-476734-S18250606882012060500000) .

CHECKING THE FITTING OF THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR (SAS)
Note. The trouble code indicates that the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) is incorrectly fitted. It is very important that the switch roller/Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) is correctly fitted. If the unit is fitted with the rotating centre section displaced by one complete revolution, internal components can be damaged when the steering wheel is turned to full lock. If it is possible that the unit is incorrectly assembled, the switch roller must be replaced.
- Ignition off
- Align the wheels in the straight ahead position.
- Remove the steering wheel.
- Ignition on
- Turn the steering wheel by more than 5° in either direction to initiate the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS).
- Read the value of steering angle by clicking on the VCT2000 (Volvo Scan Tool) symbol. Check that the steering angle is 0° when the wheels are in the straight ahead position. If the steering angle is incorrect, position the wheels straight ahead and loosen the steering wheel. Then adjust the contact roller so that the yellow mark can be seen in the contact roller window when the contact roller locking screw is in the correct position. NOTE: If the ignition key is turned to position ll when the steering wheel is removed, trouble codes for the steering wheel switches are stored in the Central Electronic Module (CEM). Other information see «CONTACT REEL, REPLACEMENT»(ref-476866-S26931636732012060500000)

STRUCTURE WEEK
- Update the software in the Steering wheel angle sensor module (SAS) if the vehicle's structure week is earlier than 200934. Checking the contact reel Start the engine with the vehicle's steering wheel in position straight ahead and then turn the steering wheel to full lock, first to the left and then to the right. Drive the car at over 10 km/h and steer completely to right and left full lock. Repeat steps 1-2 again, but instead begin with steering to full lock left and then do the same to full lock right. NOTE: Note that no anti-skid light turns on and that no message about anti-skid service is required is seen in Driver information module (DIM). If this happens, replace the contact reel.
Was the fault found?
- YES OKAY: Troubleshooting has been completed.
- NO Refer to «CHECKING THE STATUS»(ref-476858-S42900365122012060500000)
CHECKING THE STATUS
- Ignition off
- Wait approximately 10 seconds.
- Engine running.
- Read the trouble code counter by clicking the VCT2000 symbol. The counters are used to determine the problem's status. For general information about the counters, see: «DESCRIPTION OF COUNTER»(ref-476858-S42283379562012071100000) Counters 5, 6 and 7 are not used during this check. Counter 1 indicates the number of drive cycles without fault since the fault was last validated. If the counter 1 is 0 it means that the problem is permanent. Replace contact reel/steering wheel angle sensor. If counter 1 is over 0, this indicates that the problem has not been detected in this driving cycle (intermittent problem). The problem has existed earlier but is not active right now. Then check counter 4 . Counter 4 indicates number of driving cycles with problem since the problem was validated for the first time. If the number of incorrect driving cycles is high, this indicates an intermittent recurring problem. Replace contact reel/steering wheel angle sensor. If the number of incorrect driving cycles is low, this indicates an intermittent temporary problem. No action. HINT: Counter 3 indicates number of driving cycles since first time that the problem occurred. If the value for counter 3 is divided by the value for counter 4, the intensity of the problem is obtained. The higher the value, the higher the problem intensity. A high problem intensity indicates that the malfunction recurs often. NOTE: If the trouble code returns after replacement of the switch roller/steering angle sensor, replace also the Steering Wheel Module (SWM). Remedy as necessary. Other information see «CONTACT REEL, REPLACEMENT»(ref-476866-S26931636732012060500000) The Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) is integrated in the Steering Wheel Module (SWM). CHECKING THE POWER SUPPLY
Note. Steering wheel angle sensor module (SAS) is located inside, and is supplied with power by, the steering wheel module (SWM).
- Ignition on
- Read off the power supply for the steering wheel angle sensor module (SAS) and the central electronic module (CEM). The voltage for the steering wheel angle sensor module (SAS) and the central electronic module (CEM) must be approximately the same. The fault is permanent if the voltage for the steering wheel angle sensor module (SAS) deviates by more than 2.0 V from the central electronic module (CEM). If the voltage is approximately the same, this indicates an intermittent fault, i. e. the fault was present previously but is not active at the moment.
- Continue Refer to «CHECKING WIRING AND TERMINALS»(ref-476858-S19501819382012060500000)
HINT: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.
- Ignition off
- Reconnect the connectors, reinstall components etc.
- Ignition on
- Read off the power supply for the steering wheel angle sensor module (SAS) and the central electronic module (CEM). Check that the voltage is approximately battery voltage.
Is the voltage OK?
- YES VERIFIED: Troubleshooting has been completed.
- NO Refer to «INFORMATION»(ref-476858-S35760562252012060500000)
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.
VOLTAGE TOO LOW
see VOLTAGE TOO LOW
Note. This trouble code is only relevant for troubleshooting and action in the following cases
- The trouble code is active in the present driving cycle and has been active for a longer period of time.
- The customer experiences malfunction that can be attributed to the trouble code.
In other cases, the DTC does not indicate a fault and must therefore be ignored and only erased.
Do you want to continue fault-tracing?
- YES Refer to «CHECKING THE POWER SUPPLY»(ref-476858-S20344123582012060500000)
- NO OKAY: Troubleshooting has been completed.
Note. The Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) is located in the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) from which it is supplied with power.
- Ignition on
- Read the supply voltage values for the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) and the Central Electronic Module (CEM). The supply voltage values for the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) and the Central Electronic Module should be approximately the same. If the two voltages differ by more than 2.0 V then this would suggest that the fault is permanent. If the voltages are approximately the same then this would suggest that the fault is intermittent, i. e. that the fault has previously been present but is no longer active.
- Continue Refer to «CHECKING LEADS AND CONNECTORS»(ref-476858-S39082165512012060500000)
CHECKING LEADS AND CONNECTORS
Check the connector to the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) for connector resistance and oxidation.
Check the power supply lead (15i supply) between the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) #A8 (#8) and the fuse in the luggage compartment relay/fuse centre with respect to contact resistance and oxidation. For information on the cable routing, see the applicable circuit diagram.
HINT: With ignition the voltmeter should display the battery voltage.
Check the ground lead between the ground terminal and the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) #A2 (#2) with respect to resistance and oxidation. For information on the cable routing, see the applicable circuit diagram.
