Components

The head unit for the audio system is available in four versions

LOW

with radio and cassette player: HU-101.

MID

with radio, cassette player and CD changer control: HU-401, HU-411.

HIGH

with radio, cassette player, CD player: HU-601, HU-611, HU-631.

PREMIUM

with radio, integrated 4 disc CD changer and Dolby Pro Logic: HU-801.

with radio, CD-player, MD-player and Dolby Pro Logic: HU-831.

Common functions

Electronic volume control.

Automatic loudness and mono/stereo connection.

Telephone mute (not HU-101).

ASC - automatic volume setting depending on vehicle speed (not HU-101).

Factory setting on internal equalizer (not HU-101).

Manual preset of 20 FM stations.

Keypad in the steering wheel

All head units (not HU-101) have the steering wheel key pad as an option. The keypads are available in two versions; only audio keys or audio and telephone keys (telephone must be combined with the audio system).

Loudspeakers

The audio systems with separate amplifiers are equipped with loudspeaker elements with higher power tolerances. The treble loudspeakers contain high passive crossover filters (even the treble in coaxial loudspeakers).

  1. 3x4" coaxial loudspeaker in the dashboard if RTI is installed and 6" if RTI is not installed.
  2. treble and 6.5" bass speakers in the front doors (integrated splitting filter).
  3. coaxial loudspeakers in the rear doors (integrated crossover filters).
  4. coaxial loudspeakers in the parcel shelf (integrated crossover filters).

Wiring

The loudspeaker wiring (not center loudspeaker) and wiring for the antenna amplifier for the main antenna are pre-routed.

Cars with audio system HU-4XX and upwards are equipped with wiring for the center loudspeaker, sub-antenna and positive supply to the separate amplifier.

All loudspeaker wiring is twinned to avoid interference.

Antennae

The P23 has two radio antennae, one main antenna (windshield antenna in the rear windshield) and a sub-antenna (not HU-101). The sub-antenna is mounted in the rear bumper on the right-hand side and has an antenna amplifier mounted in the cargo compartment under the right tail lamp.

  1. On cars with RTI the sub-antenna is also used for traffic information for RTI. On cars with HU-101 head unit the sub antenna is not installed. (HU-101 cannot be combined with RTI.) On cars without RTI and with a HU-4XX head unit both antennae are connected to the radio.

Note. When installing the RTI as an after market component the sub-antenna amplifier must be replaced.

  1. HU-4XX and upwards have Diversity function (twin antenna system). The diversity function reduces the risk of multi wave interference (Multipath). Because of reflection the radio antenna can receive the same signal at different times, the signal that has traveled furthest arrives late. If the signals are in direct opposition at the point where the antenna is located they blank out each other and the radio does not receive any signal. Because the car has two antennae (main antenna and sub antenna) the radio uses the antenna which is least affected by multipath.

External amplifier

The external amplifier is located under the right front seat.

The amplifier is an option for HU-601/611/631 and is standard for HU-801/831.

The amplifier has a power handling capacity of 4x50W.

CD player for 10 CDs

The CD changer is available as an option and is installed on the bracket in the cargo compartment (HU-4XX and upwards).

System Levels

The customer may select from 5 different system levels. The components are optional (O) or standard (S) for the selected level. All components for each market are available as accessories.

Scheme 79: Diagnostics

The diagnostic system for the audio module, phone module and RTI continuously diagnoses the function in the system components and stores any diagnostic trouble code (DTCs). The diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can then be read off via VIDA. The principles for presentation of information are the same as the cars other on-board diagnostic (OBD) system.

  1. Audio module (AUM), phone module (PHM) and RTI have a diagnostic function to check all system components. The diagnostic system is activated automatically but can also be controlled from the VIDA station.
  2. It is possible to carry out a diagnostic check on an activated module. The phone module (PHM) always has driving voltage. Audio module (AUM) and RTI have driving voltage when the ignition is in position I.
  3. The identity of the system control module, and the installed software can be read off via the VIDA station. With replacement part number, previous service and repairs to the control module can also be read off.

Substitute Value

The audio and RTI system s have no substitute values in case of fault in systems components.

The telephone system has substitute values which are automatically activated by the phone module (PHM) when a certain type of fault occurs. There are four different types of situation which give rise to substitute values

  1. In case of a fault in the handset the phone module (PHM) forces the telephone system to use the handsfree. Message in the display.
  2. In case of a fault in the handsfree equipment the phone module (PHM) forces the telephone system to use the handset. Message in the display.
  3. At faults that affect the user access to the other telephone functions. The phone module (PHM) reduces system functionality so that the telephone may only make/accept calls. This also occurs when Driver information module (DIM) or CAN communication is lost. When functionality is reduced a message is displayed (if Driver information module (DIM) has not been lost.
  4. At faults that might cause damage to the components with continued use. The phone module (PHM) switches off the telephone box, handsfree, hand set and bus between Phone module (PHM) and the telephone box.

The phone module (PHM) guides a return to normal function when the fault is remedied.

Customer Settings

The parameters for customer adjustments are data that can be adjusted when the customer is not happy with a particular function or when the car has been used in another country. The parameters are designed around the car equipment and are implemented in the factory. All the parameters for the audio, telephone and RTI is set with the system controls and can therefore be changed by the customer.

Note. When installing or replacing the control module the parameters must be updated according to the previous setting.

Most recordings today are made so that the vocalist/soloist is heard from straight ahead while the orchestra is heard over the entire left-right panorama and from behind.

Input Signals PHM

Audio signals from the handsfree microphone (via telephone box).

GSM communication from the telephone antenna (via telephone box).

The central electrical module (CEM) sends the following signals to the phone module (PHM)

  1. The signal controlling the keypad lighting.
  2. The vehicle speed, taken from ABS, controls the telephone system sound level (ASC - Automatic Sound Control).
  3. Identification of the ignition key transponder for access to PIN.
  4. Control signals from the keypad in the steering wheel hub.
  5. Global parameters.
  6. Signals from VIDA via data link connector (DLC).

The signal controlling the keypad lighting is a combination of the signal from the sun sensor which is connected to the CCM and the rheostat connected to the light switch module.

The keypad in the Steering wheel hub are connected to the steering wheel module which sends to the phone module (PHM) keypad. When the phone module is activated the telephone system has precedence and the steering wheel audio keypad is put out of function. If the phone module receives a signal indicating that the steering wheel module does not function all signals from the steering wheel module will be ignored.

Global parameters can be, for example, language selection.

Output Signals PHM

GSM communication to the telephone antenna (via telephone box).

Audio signal to handsfree loudspeaker.

Audio signal to the handset.

The phone module sends the following signals.

  1. Text messages concerning the telephone system are sent from the phone module to the Driver information module (DIM) which displays them.
  2. In event of a call the audio module receives a signal and activates the audio system mute function.
  3. Signals to VIDA via data link connector (DLC).

If the telephone system stops functioning it will stop sending the phone module communicating signal which causes the central electrical module (CEM) to inform other modules that the phone module does not function. If the Driver information module (DIM) receives 20 such messages and the ignition key is in positions I or II a warning message will be displayed.

If the phone module receives a signal that the Driver information module (DIM) does not function the telephone system functions are reduced. In this situation calls may only be made and received.

Input Signals Audio Module (AUM)

Audio signal from CD changer.

Audio signal and the signal from the TV receiver for displaying the station setting. The sound is reproduced in multi channel mono through all loudspeakers.

Audio signal from RTI unit. Sound reproduced in driver's side door-mounted loudspeaker.

Radio reception FM/AM from antenna in the rear windshield.

Radio reception FM from the sub-antenna in the rear bumper, when the diversity is activated (HU-4XX and upwards).

The central electrical module (CEM) sends the following signals to the audio module (AUM)

  1. Signal controlling the keypad lighting (depending on sun sensor and rheostat).
  2. Signal controlling the display lighting (depending on sun sensor and rheostat).
  3. The vehicle speed controls the telephone system sound level (ASC - Automatic Sound Control).
  4. In event of a telephone call a signal from the phone module activates the audio system mute function.
  5. When the phone module is activated the module sends a signal which disables the steering wheel hub keys controlling the audio module.
  6. Global parameters.
  7. Signals from VIDA via data link connector (DLC).

Output Signals Audio Module (AUM)

Audio signal to all the loudspeakers (depending on equipment).

Audio signal to a separate power amplifier (depending on equipment).

Position signal from GPS antenna.

The central electrical module (CEM) sends the following signals to the RTI

  1. Signal for setting the light strength from the rheostat connected to the light switch module (LSM).
  2. Signal if back-up (reverse) gear is engaged.
  3. Signal if the parking brake is engaged from the Driver information module (DIM).
  4. Vehicle speed signal from ABS.
  5. Control signals from the RTI control via the steering wheel module.
  6. Global parameters.

If the car is equipped with automatic transmission the back-up (reversing) lamp switch is connected to the Transmission control module (TCM) which sends a signal to the central electrical module (CEM) if the back-up (reverse) gear is engaged. If the car is equipped with a manual transmission the back-up (reversing) lamp switch is connected directly to the central electrical module (CEM).

If the parking brake is applied it indicates that the car is stationary and that the TV receiver may be used.

The vehicle speed signal, from the ABS, is used so that the RTI can give the driver an accurate position. The signal is combined with gyro signals, GPS signals and the map information. If the car is equipped with an automatic transmission the RTI also receives a vehicle speed signal from the Transmission control module (TCM).

The back-up (reverse) gear engaged signal is used by the RTI unit to calculate which direction the car is traveling in. The GPS signal positioning ability is not accurate enough to be able to register short backwards movements. The RTI unit gyro cannot determine whether the car movement is backwards or forwards. If the car changes direction without reversing the gyro will detect it.

The audio system is available in five different levels and can be complemented with a telephone system and RTI depending on the market. The telephone control module (PHM) with keypad is mounted in the audio system head unit (Audio module (AUM)). Sound from the RTI is handled by the Audio Module (AUM). The Telephone and RTI are only options if the car is equipped with an audio system.

The audio system head unit is available in eight different versions depending on the market.

Ten disc CD changer for audio as an option (HU-4XX and upwards).

Keypad in the steering wheel for the audio and telephone as an option and accessory (HU-4XX and upwards).

Telephone for GSM - 900MHz as an option and accessory.

The telephone has a handsfree function as standard and handset as option.

RTI can be combined with HU-4XX and upwards. Sound for direction instructions comes from the drivers side door-mounted loudspeaker.

The RTI display unit rises vertically at activation (provides space for the center loudspeaker).

CD ROM Changer

A CD ROM disc contains map data, voice guide and the system software.

  1. The CD ROM changer has room for 6 discs.
  2. When using the system software is loaded into a flash memory which makes program updating very fast.

Antennae

GPS antenna is active with integrated amplifier and impedance. The RTI unit supplies the antenna amplifier with driving voltage through the antenna cable. The GPS antenna is integrated under the parcel shelf.

There are four TV antennae which are combined with the antennae for FM, AM and FM-MPX (depending on the market). These antennae are integrated into the rear windshield and are connected to two antenna amplifiers installed on the left and right hand sides of the windshield.

The sub antenna in the rear bumper is used for the TMC or FM-MPX depending on market. The antenna amplifier is located inside the bumper. (The sub-antenna is also used by the audio system for the diversity function.)

Display

The RTI system Man Machine Interface (MMI) consists of a 5" display screen and a voice guide.

The screen is a color LCD type. It displays maps, menus, routes and traffic information.

The system can also provide the driver with telephone numbers and street addresses of hotels, restaurants etc. The information displayed depends on what is stored on the CD ROM discs.

The screen can be set for day or night so that it is easy to read in different lighting conditions. In certain markets the setting occurs automatically.

Control

The user operates the RTI using the controls on the reverse of the steering wheel or with a remote control. There are the following controls: ENTER (selecting function), BACK (previous menu) and a 4 way return sprung key for selecting symbols, scrolling the map or moving position in the menu system. A remote control with corresponding functions is also available.

RTI Unit

The RTI unit calculates the position of the car and the route a chosen destination, decodes traffic bulletins etc. The unit then transmits information to the display based on these calculations. If the voice message has been selected the RTI system sends the voice guide to the audio system via a separate bus which is not part of CAN.

The RTI system includes a position sensor which gives an absolute value through GPS and a gyro which senses the vehicles relative position and angle.

The calculated position is compared with data stored on the CD ROM discs located in the CD changer. The current map and vehicle position are displayed on the system display screen. The TMC radio signal or the FM Multiplex radio signal (depending on market) is supplied via the RTI antenna unit which decodes the signal. The information is then displayed on the screen in the form of symbols.

GPS data is adjusted with dead reckoning and map alignment which means that when the car turns the information from car position on the GPS is aligned to the map information to what the road network looks like. Faulty indication from the GPS can mean that the cars position is outside the road network or on a parallel road for short periods of time until map adjustment occurs.

Depending on the market the receiver for the TMC or FM-MPX is used for traffic information.

GPS Receiver

The car position is determined using GPS (Global Positioning System) with an accuracy of 100 meters.

TV receiver

TV receiver is an option (PAL or NTSC depending on the market.)

The RTI unit prevents the TV receiver from functioning when the car is moving.

Channel and sound settings are controlled by the audio module (AUM) via a communication bus.

The TV receiver uses the same remote control as the audio system. The remote control signals go via the audio module (AUM).

Connections

The handsfree microphone and telephone antenna are connected directly to the telephone box. All other communication between the keypad and the telephone box is carried out via a communication bus mounted on the right side of the car. It transfers audio signals, voltage and messages for communication.

  1. The handsfree microphone and telephone antenna are connected to the telephone box via cables with quick-release connectors. The connector cables for the handsfree microphone and telephone antenna are routed under the headlining to the left C post and along the parcel shelf to the telephone box.

Note. The telephone antenna has a resistance of 0 W during supply (the usual type of antenna has a certain determined resistance).

  1. Wiring routing and component location is dependent on whether the car is left or right hand drive. (Handsfree loudspeaker and wiring go with the driver's seat.)
