Draining the refrigerant and removing the components

Note. Always plug the pipes and connections when working on the climate control system.
Drain the refrigerant from the system. See Refrigerant, draining .
Remove the condenser, see Condenser, replacing .

Remove the drier filter screw on the underside (1) and the screw at the service valve (2).
Carefully bend up the drier filter from the connection on the condenser (3) using a slotted screwdriver.
Note. For tightening torques, see Tightening torque .
New drain hose
Note. A new drain hose has been introduced into production. The modification means that drainage from the filter housing is withdrawn.
When replacing the drain hose on older cars a new hatch is supplied for the filter housing. The hatch drainage outlet is plugged.
The drainage from the fan motor cover remains.

Older version cars
Remove the soundproofing panel. See Soundproofing panel, replacing .
Loosen the floor carpet in front of the door sill and side. Fold the floor carpet to one side.
Remove the cover for the air cleaner. See Air cleaner passenger compartment, replacing .
Remove
- the grommet from the floor
- the hose from the fan motor cover.

Newer version cars
Remove the passenger side soundproofing panel. See Soundproofing panel, replacing .
Remove
- the floor grommet
- the hose from the fan motor cover.
Installing the drain hose
Older version cars
Install the cover for the air cleaner. See Air cleaner passenger compartment, replacing .
Press the grommet into place.
Push the drainage hose onto the blower fan motor.
Note. The drainage hose is marked by a colored stripe. When installing the marking must be aligned on the blower fan motor cover as shown. This is to avoid twisting the hose.
Reinstall the front floor carpet.
Install the soundproofing panel. See Soundproofing panel, replacing .
Newer version cars
Press the grommet into place.
Push the drainage hose onto the blower fan motor.
Note. The drainage hose is marked by a colored stripe. When installing the marking must be aligned on the blower fan motor cover as shown. This is to avoid twisting the hose.
Reinstall the front floor carpet.
Install the soundproofing panel. See Soundproofing panel, replacing .
Resetting contact roller
Reset the contact roller acc. to Contact reel driver airbag module, resetting .

Note. Check that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
Pull the connectors from the contact roller through the steering wheel.
Install the steering wheel carefully so that the contact roller's two catches fit in the steering wheel hub's both slots.
Install the steering wheel screw. Use a new screw. Tighten with fingers.
| CAUTION | Do not turn the steering wheel when it is on the steering shaft. Since the contact reel is locked, it will be damaged beyond repair if the wheel is turned in this situation. |
Loosen the lock screw that holds the contact roller.
Install it in the parking hole on the steering wheel.
Connect tools (2 pcs.): 9511506 to the contact roller's SRS-wiring.
Drive the car straight ahead and check that the steering wheel stands in position "straight ahead".
If the steering wheel position is incorrect, repeat the adjustment.
Tighten the screw in the center of the steering wheel.
Remove the tools (2 pcs.): 9511506 .
Tighten the steering wheel screw with 40 Nm.
Check that the SRS-light goes out, that is, that no diagnostic trouble codes remain.
