Steering column, replacing

Removing components

Remove

1. the battery negative cable. See: «Battery, disconnecting»(ref-415278-S03862267492011081500000)
2. the soundproofing panel. See: «Soundproofing panel, replacing»(ref-445665-S24616757552012010600000) .

Scheme 7

Remove the drivers airbag (SRS). See AIRBAG DRIVER AND PASSENGER (SRS), REPLACING .

Remove the lock screw from its "parking hole" in the steering wheel and install it in the contact reel.

Scheme 8

Remove the steering wheel screw. Ensure that the front wheels and steering wheel are in the straight ahead position. Remove the steering wheel.

Note. Ensure that the connectors do not catch on the steering wheel during removal.

Scheme 9

Remove the 3 screws.

Pull the steering wheel as far out as possible.

Remove the clip mounting between the covers.

Remove the lower steering column cover.

Remove the seal for the clip mounting at the dashboard.

Remove the upper steering column cover.

Installing the steering column

Note. Lubricate the steering shaft friction surfaces and the steering column bearing. Use low temperature grease, P/N 1161417-9 (30 grams). Lubrication is important to avoid noise from the steering column.

Note. Check that the rear seat rails are undamaged.

Hook the steering column into the three guides.

Install the screws. Tighten to 25 Nm . Tighten the rear screw first.

Installing the lower steering shaft joint

Install the steering shaft on the lower steering shaft joint.

Install

1. a new screw. Tighten to 25 Nm .
2. the steering shaft boot and snap ring.

Fold back the carpet.

Installing the cable for ignition switch interlock (vehicles with automatic transmissions only).

Set the gear selector lever to P position.

Move the ignition key to position I.

Press the cable into the ignition switch and feel to see that it sits correctly.

Remove the ignition key and check that the gear selector lever is blocked in P position.

Installing the steering wheel lock module

Remove the ignition key.

Install the steering wheel lock module.

Connect the connector.

Installing steering column covers

Install

1. the lower cover for the steering column. Secure the seals for the switches
2. the 3 screws.

Press the seal in towards the dashboard in the upper steering column cover.

Press the lower cover into place in the upper cover.

Note. Check that the seals for the switches are positioned correctly throughout the operation.

Installing the steering wheel

Route the connectors through the hole in the steering wheel one by one.

Install

1. the steering wheel
2. the center screw. Tighten. See «Summary of tightening torques for specific components»(ref-415458-S18638818192011081500000) .

Remove the screw from the contact reel and place it in the "parking hole".

Install the drivers airbag (SRS). See AIRBAG DRIVER AND PASSENGER (SRS), REPLACING .

Finishing

Ensure that the steering wheel turns easily and that the steering lock functions.

Install the battery lead.

Test drive the vehicle.

Check that the steering wheel is in the correct position.

Adjust the steering wheel position if necessary. See Steering wheel position, adjusting .

Steering wheel position, adjusting

Preparation

Test drive the car and make a note of the steering wheel position.

Remove the battery lead. See Battery, disconnecting .

Remove the driver's airbag module. See AIRBAG DRIVER AND PASSENGER (SRS), REPLACING .

Remove the steering wheel mounting screw.

Turn the steering wheel to the position noted during the test drive. Remove the steering wheel.

Zero the contact reel. See Contact reel driver airbag module, resetting .

Set the steering wheel to the "straight ahead" position.

Note. Do not turn the steering wheel when it is on the steering shaft. Since the contact reel is locked, it will be damaged beyond repair if the wheel is turned in this situation.

Tighten the steering wheel mounting screw. Tighten to 35 Nm .

Remove the locking screw for the contact reel. Secure the locking screw in the "parking hole" in the steering wheel.

Install

1. the driver's airbag module. See «AIRBAG DRIVER AND PASSENGER (SRS), REPLACING»(ref-445653-S09088400872012010600000)
2. the battery lead.

Test drive and repeat the adjustment if necessary.

Steering wheel module (SWM)

Remove the steering wheel and steering column covers. See Replacing the steering column covers

Scheme 10

Remove

1. 2 screws
2. the connectors
3. the control module with stalks and the contact reel by releasing the catches on the underside
4. The windscreen wiper and indicator lamp stalks. See «Washer / wiper switch, replacing»(ref-445664-S02827967292012010600000) and «Turn signal switch, replacing»(ref-445664-S38565567362012010600000)
5. the contact reel. See «Contact reel / steering wheel angle sensor, replacing»(ref-415382-S27136488542011081500000)

The control module is now exposed.

To install, reverse the removal procedure

Programming the control module

Program the control module according to the table below.

Note. Vehicles up to and including model year 2004 must be loaded with Steering wheel module (SWM) software. Vehicles from and including model year 2005 must only be loaded with Steering wheel module (SWM) software if the vehicle has DSTC.

Scheme 11

1. Ignition off
2. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. See «Replacing the steering column covers»(ref-415382-S30067112852011081500000)
3. Remove the 2 screws for the switch
4. Remove the rubber boot.

Note. The pins on the switch are fragile.

1. Carefully pull the switch straight out.

Turn signal lamp switch

1. Install the rubber boot.

Note. The pins on the switch are fragile.

1. Insert the switch straight in from the side in the correct position. Carefully press the switch into the micro-switch. Ensure that the pins are in the correct positions in the micro-switch
2. Install the screws for the switch
3. Install the upper and lower steering column covers. See «Replacing the steering column covers»(ref-415382-S30067112852011081500000)

Scheme 12

1. Ignition off
2. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. See «Replacing the steering column covers»(ref-415382-S30067112852011081500000)
3. Remove the 2 screws for the switch
4. Remove the rubber boot.

Note. The pins on the switch are fragile.

1. Carefully pull the switch straight out.

Windshield wiper and washer switch

1. Install the rubber boot.

Note. The pins on the switch are fragile.

1. Insert the switch straight in from the side in the correct position. Carefully press the switch into the micro-switch. Ensure that the pins are in the correct positions in the micro-switch
2. Install the screws for the switch
3. Install the upper and lower steering column covers. See «Replacing the steering column covers»(ref-415382-S30067112852011081500000)

Steering wheel, replacing

Scheme 13

Remove the driver's airbag module. See AIRBAG DRIVER AND PASSENGER (SRS), REPLACING .

Lock the contact reel in position with the locking screw.

Remove the screw steering wheel - steering column.

Pull the steering wheel straight back.

Pull out the cable harness through the hole in the steering wheel. Remove the steering wheel.

Pull the cable harness through the hole. Install the steering wheel.

Install the screw for the steering wheel - steering column. Use a new screw.

Remove the screw for the locking the contact reel.

Install the driver's airbag module. See AIRBAG DRIVER AND PASSENGER (SRS), REPLACING .
