INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT

Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

HINT

  1. DTC P0011 or P0012 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Those foreign objects may then be captured by the oil filter.

Scheme 142

Scheme 142: DESCRIPTION
  1. The intake air temperature sensor, mounted in the mass air flow meter sub-assembly, monitors the intake air temperature. The intake air temperature sensor has a built-in thermistor with a resistance that varies according to the temperature of the intake air. When the intake air temperature becomes low, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature becomes high, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the ECM as voltage changes see scheme 1
  2. The intake air temperature sensor is powered by a 5 V supply from the THA terminal of the ECM, via resistor R which is located inside the ECM.
  3. Resistor R and the intake air temperature sensor are connected in series. When the resistance value of the intake air temperature sensor changes, according to changes in the intake air temperature, the voltage at terminal THA also varies. Based on this signal, the ECM increases the fuel injection volume when the engine is cold to improve driveability.
DTC No.DTC Detection ConditionTrouble Area
P0111Either of the following condition is met (2 trip detection logic). The intake air temperature change from the previous trip warm up to the following trip is small. The change in the intake air temperature after engine start is less than the threshold value.Mass air flow meter sub-assembly

  1. If any DTCs other than misfire DTCs are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
  2. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
  3. If the misfire does not recur when the vehicle is brought to the workshop, reproduce the conditions stored in the ECM as freeze frame data.
  4. If the misfire still cannot be reproduced even though the conditions stored in the ECM as freeze frame data have been reproduced, one of the following factors is considered to be a possible cause of the problem: There was insufficient fuel in the tank. Improper fuel is used. The spark plugs have been contaminated. The problem requires further diagnosis.
  5. After finishing repairs, check the misfire counts of the cylinders Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #4 Misfire Count.
  6. Be sure to confirm that no misfiring cylinder DTCs are stored again by conducting the confirmation driving pattern after finishing repairs.
  7. When one of Short FT #1or Long FT #1 in the freeze frame data is outside the range of +/-20%, the air fuel ratio may be Rich (-20% or less) or Lean (20% or more).
  8. When the Coolant Temp in the freeze frame data is less than 75°C (167°F), the misfire has occurred only while warming up the engine.
  9. An extremely imbalanced drive wheel which causes body vibration may cause misfire DTCs to be stored.

  1. After performing the inspection procedure for the crankshaft position sensor, if DTC P0335 is output again, check the following items related to the camshaft position sensor. Installation condition of the camshaft position sensor Installation condition of the camshaft Connection of the camshaft position sensor connector
  2. If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical systems.
  3. Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked using the Techstream. To check, follow the operation below: Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on. Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode). Refer to «INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE»(ref-551389-S33941292062013051500000) . Start the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Primary / Engine Speed. The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the engine rotating normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed if the crankshaft position sensor output voltage is insufficient.

Perform the operation with the engine speeds and time durations described below prior to checking the waveforms of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors. This is to activate the sensors sufficiently to obtain appropriate inspection results.

Scheme 159

Scheme 159: CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING
  1. (a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 [A].
  2. (b) Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on [B].
  3. (c) Put the engine in inspection mode (maintenance mode). Refer to «INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE»(ref-551389-S33941292062013051500000) [C].
  4. (d) Start the engine and warm it up with all the accessories switched off until the engine coolant temperature stabilizes [D].
  5. (e) Run the engine at an engine speed of 2500 RPM for at least 3 minutes [E]. HINT: During charging control, the engine speed is set at idle. Therefore, the engine speed does not increase when depressing the accelerator pedal. In this case, perform step [E] after charging control has completed.
  6. (f) While running the engine at 2500 RPM for 2 seconds and 1500 RPM for 2 seconds, check the waveforms of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors using the Techstream [F].

HINT

  1. If either of the voltage outputs of the air fuel ratio or heated oxygen sensor does not fluctuate, or there is noise in the waveform of either sensor, the sensor may be malfunctioning.
  2. If the voltage outputs of both the sensors remain lean or rich, the air fuel ratio may be extremely lean or rich. In such cases, perform the Control the Injection Volume Active Test using the Techstream.
  3. If the three-way catalytic converter has deteriorated, the heated oxygen sensor (located behind the three-way catalytic converter) voltage output fluctuates up and down frequently, even under normal driving conditions (active air fuel ratio control is not performed).

HINT

  1. If a malfunction cannot be found when troubleshooting DTC P0420, a lean or rich abnormality may be cause. Perform troubleshooting by following the inspection procedure for P0171 (System Too Lean) and P0172 (System Too Rich).
  2. Sensor 1 refers to the sensor closest to the engine assembly.
  3. Sensor 2 refers to the sensor farthest away from the engine assembly.
